Uncle D, "Shenmi"(Shenmis is the plural form used in English since the plural form does not exist in Chinese) is a direct translation based on the pronunciation of the Chinese character "生米," which adorably refers to Shen's fans. Though the Chinese characters used here literally mean raw rice (or uncooked rice), because the pronunciation closely resembles the sound of "Shen" (his first name) and "mi" (fan or rice), the fans of Shen have picked this name for themselves. YOU are one of the Shenmis!!! :D "Shen-Shen," on the other hand, is his first name called twice, which is a common practice of Chinese speakers to call someone close in a cute and intimate way. Usually, the last Chinese character of their first name called twice. Since his first name (Shen) only has one character (and syllable), we call him Shen-Shen.

Shen-Shen knows his voice is "special" in a way that has brought him many deep traumas since adolescence. He mentioned numerous times in different interviews how people didn't realize their comments towards him about his girlish and childlike voice had been harsh and hurtful. However, he did not resent these people and their comments but used these experiences to encourage others who suffer from bias for being so "different."
