Yes, my very first drama from Mainland China. I have never watched a drama from China all my life & boy did I hit on the right one as my first choice! This actress kept me mesmerised throughout the drama - her joy & suffering was spot on. Her line delivery, aside from her charismatic voice, is just pure gold. It's restrained and yet full of emotions, as well as being very stylish and "unpredictable" unlike the standard dubbing for period drama. I simply cannot predict how she's going to say a certain line until actually hearing her say it, and then I just go "wow that is spot-on, perfect, exactly how this line is supposed to be delivered!" I can still clearly remember that scene in Ruyi where she is completely fed up with the emperor and has a huge argument with him which ends with her cutting her hair and basically divorcing him - OMG her acting and line delivery. Absolutely blew my mind.

I read that people complained that her raspy voice sounded too mature for her role as Ruyi. I was like are you kidding? Her voice was one of the few things that pulled me into that drama.

This drama was just so bleak. I couldn't take it. I could only watch a couple of episodes at a time. But she is magic. I love her in every scene. She is so expressive, with just a slight tensing of her face muscles or a slow look down. She is amazing. But I wouldn't be able to watch it again.

Agree although Ruyi royal love in palace is depressing as hell and probably will scarred you for life, Zhou Xun's perf is really, really, really mindblowing. The emperor guy is totally trampled by her peeformance.

The emperor's role is more shallow and limited. Whereas the female roles in that drama are very deep and extend over a lifetime. The acting in that drama series was superb.

I'm fairly new to Zhou Xun but I know exactly what you mean by her acting. I think I was captivated by her aura first. She just has this sophisticated aura and when watching her act, you feel the genuine emotions she tries to depict. The second thing I love about her is her voice. It's so calming to hear and I'm so glad she uses it instead of dubbers coming in.

She's my absolute favorite Chinese actress, and one of my fav actresses, period. She has so much talent. I discovered her in Ruyi and instantly fell in love with her as an actress. And I'm in love with her voice. I'm so glad she's now powerful enough to refuse to be dubbed. It's such a shame to dub an amazing voice like hers. I'm not sure I can find some of her older works dubbed in english, but I will certainly try.

I love how she in Ruyi's Royal Love only raised her voice once -- I believe? -- when she counters Wei Yanwan's "I am the Imperial Noble Consort" with "And I am the Empress!" -- before she storms off to deal with the emperor and the escort ladies on the boat, only for it to turn into the ultimate fight of a married couple which culminates in The Hair Cutting Incident and the tragic, sad consequences... She didn't need to loudly weep and shout and scream (like the other actresses in that drama) to convey the emotions of Ruyi. And that made it especially deep and convincing.

I came across Zhou Xun in Ruyi Zhuan and I was so stunned. Ngl, I watched the drama mostly for her. I even avoided Yanxi Gong because I didn't want to see her character as an antagonist. I still remember being dazzled during the scene where she cuts her hair and that one scene where she cries after returning from the cold palace. Her voice totally sold me.

Hi Avenue X, 谢谢你! these pieces are interesting, but there is little to no analysis of why the actor is good. For example with Zhou Xun, I would say, that one of the reasons she is such a force of screen is that every movement she makes has a meaning, the tensing of her face muscles, when she looks out into the middle distance, even how she breathes, she has total control. Zhang Zi Yi, also has very expressive eyes, but not in the way that Zhou Xun does. Also in regards to her voice, she also speaks very sparingly. So that every word she says has gravitas. This is especially visible in Hua Pi, or the Little Chinese seamstress. A list of works is OK, but I feel there is more to offer.

I never realized how many of her works that I have actually seen. I did just see the Vogue piece and yes her VOICE!!! Her voice has been an inspiration. AvenueX before you mentioning all of the successes that she has had, I got a glimpse of her picture and said to myself is she talking about RUYI from the drama " RUYI'S ROYAL LOVE IN THE PALACE " and to my surprise you certainly were. She did an excellent job in that drama and before you mentioning anything I knew that their was something special about her I just felt it. Now , I can't go back and look at that drama ever again because it touched me so much especially from that SLAP the EMPEROR gave her that tore me up but other than that her acting just deserves one word "EFFORTLESS" and that really makes a great actor. She’s marvelous. I’ve never watched a Chinese series before but came across Ruyi and thought what the heck... Binged it in about 2 weeks and wow. She’s a revelation. Love her. Not sure why Ruyi wouldn’t have been well received. Sorry of Yanxi Palace is silly... Ruyi has depth and better overall production. Hopefully it lives a longer life and is more appreciated long term. The costuming alone was exceptional. ***Nov 2023*** Forgot watching this and almost commented again. I’ve already binged all of Ruyi again, this year. She’s amazing.

I didn't know who she was as I'm pretty new to Chinese dramas myself and haven't watch a lot of older dramas and films. However when I heard she was starring opposite Wang Yibo in that VogueFilm and a lot of people on my socmed timeline were freaking out about it, I looked her up and basically was utterly surprised and kinda intimidated by her achievements. She's such a veteran actress and her acting awards are so many! The VogueFilm was so good and she was so good in it (even though you said it wasn't even her 100%) and I'm glad that Yibo managed to keep up with her. If only that project was a feature length film, it would've been more amazing. Like you, I'm hoping they could work on another project again. He would really learn so much from her.

Zhou Xun is a very "bankable talent". The first and only time I saw Zhou Xun act was in Ruyi's Royal Love. She went up against many beautiful actresses in this series. Joan Chen so beautiful, and so was the third Empress, Empress Ling. The first Empress was so favored. What does this make the Second Empress Ruyi? The Emperor's closest friend, a pampered woman in the Palace? Her voice is dark (deep).unlike the higher pitched voices of the palace women (even the maids have a more soprano sounding voice). I enjoyed Ruyi's Royal Love immensely!

Also I would like to emphasize that you MUST watch LOVE STORY IN SHANGAI (synphony of rain). This drama is a real drama, I mean you will cry as never before : the music, the scenery, the actors and the end are just beautifully and truly dramatic (not just romantic). Woah! I'm here for the Palace of Desire video! I love Zhou Xun so much. I can recognize her voice (and Wang Kai's) on any program, even without seeing her or understanding what's being said. I actually also own her version of Legend of the Condor Heroes lol. I thought her Huang Rong was particularly sharp and edgy while looking sweet. Li Yapeng's Guo Jing was particularly...dumb. Anyway, I am constantly moved by Zhou Xun's acting. I watched Ruyi just for her even though I thought it was al...righttttttt. Another talented, super special and great Chinese artist, to me she is more than an actress, she is the BENCHMARK. I watched April Rhapsody a decade after its release, and got so impressed with both leads, especially her, and watched Love Story in Shanghai due to her. When I came back watching Chinese films and dramas after years of hiatus, hers and Gong Li's work are the ones I sought after. She does not give you that edgy feel with her acting, yet every role she plays has been so touching. I get what you mean that the drama might flop, but she stands out with her acting. She might still be too young for the bestowment, but I am quite comfortable calling her an acting legend.
