I am learning Chinese right now and I've wondered why I don't see anyone talking about Chinese philosophy in college or on KZbin but at last, I found you! Love from Argentina!

Actually eastern philosophy is very interesting and very different. That's why most westerners don't understand orientals thinking.

@@miyousjz4940 Oh yeah I've seen them. That's how I stumbled on here. What I meant was relatively and holistically speaking, the Asian philosophies, in general, don't get mentioned too often. The ones who do don't really give the context so at first, I would think that what they were speaking was ludicrous but then I find out that they were referencing a specific thing. At least on youtube, Daoism gets covered by some big-name ones. In colleges, most just pretend like they don't exist lol kinda sad really.

Muscles always operate in pairs; while one pulls in one direction, its complement pulls in the opposite direction. The genius of this mechanical design is movement that is precise, smooth. For me, Confucius and Chuang Tzu are such a pair of muscles.

Chuang Tzu said that words speak about something.....and he used his words to help us realize something. Or perhaps nothing.

The senseless wars and instability brings on the nihilism, the Chinese discovered it BCE, the West in 19th century. The greatest difference is the relationship to death. The West started running away from it, but the East started an intricate dance without fear.

You put it nicely. It’s really fascinating to learn about how each society before globalization reacted to a problem in their own unique ways and proposed quite distinct solutions.

how well does James Legge's translation of Zhuangzi's book hold up today?
@ryokan9120
@ryokan9120 7 ай бұрын
For his time, he did an amazing job. But it doesn't compare to some modern translations because some of the more ambiguous parts of Zhuangzi only make sense when comparing lots of different commentators and James Legge didn't have access to most of those commentators. It's also been said that Legge might have imposed some Confucianist and theistic biases into his translations because of his Christian missionary background.
