It's remarkable how the extreme turmoil of creating and consolidating a great power almost literally from scratch catapulted so many sons of peasants and poor workers to the highest stages of world power. Both Stalin and Khrushchev, for example, had childhoods in absolute poverty. So many more died trying though

Gorby is too hated. He wasn't horrible. He at least knew their system had failed and was in dire need of reform. Had the hardliners taken power the USSR would have likely become a very big North Korea. Stagnant, corrupt and constantly making huge military shows with pathetically outdated equipment
@kurzeful
@kurzeful Жыл бұрын
@PÃO he was horrible, incompetent, and naive. I am not from Europe, but I liked communism like many people in the west, and I can tell you his policies were crazy. His two reforms were western in origin, so it seems he was admiring the West for a while. Even the Americans were puzzled about some of his decisions. Years later, he will regret what he did and blame others for his short-sightedness. Had the hardliners taken power, the mighty Soviet Union would be around, the world would be a better place, and America would be less of a bully. Russia would not be ridiculed and mocked in the west and pushed into a corner where the prospect of a nuclear war may yet happen. He should have concentrated on the great USSR problems and left Eastern Europe alone, and perhaps the demise would never have come. Then, after the collapse, the idiot started writing about democracy and capitalism instead of socialism and communism. This showed me he was more into the West than his own country. I am not from Europe, but I love history, and I can tell you, in my opinion, he is the worst world leader. He caused the breakup of the mightiest country of the 20th century at the expense of peace, and America and NATO, the enemies, are still around. If that, my friend, is not the most blatant stupidity of the 20th century, then I don't know what is. Long live the unbreakable Union of the Soviets!!
