The main impact of this doco was to launch BJM on the wider world. Anton is still making great music. The stuff he's done with Tess Parks is phenomenal. Can't think of anything any notable any of the Dandys have done recently.
@JacksonPolyp
@JacksonPolyp 4 жыл бұрын
This is exactly right. I'm surprised she thinks the doc could have made the Dandys look worse...because it makes them look pretty bad. And the prediction of the Dandys guitarist at the end of the film, something along the lines of "maybe everyone will forget about us but still be listening to BJM records decades from now," turned out to be very true.

I love the Dandys, they’re cool and fun and likeable. But without any question Anton‘s more troubled life has made him a much deeper and artistically more relevant artist. That still doesn’t mean that drugs make you more interesting. But I know about myself and many other people that the BJM substantially helped us through difficult times of our lives. And I don’t believe that as many people say that about the Dandys.

"She (her daughter) is not as impressed by me as most other people are." Poor "other people." I' m not at all impressed by her. She's the Linda McCartney of TDW. To hear her call herself an artist is enough to make one vomit. She's not even a human being. She's a social role. An NPC. A cliche. In short, a nothing.

‘Haters can hate’ That must explain why many BJM fans seem to spend most of their time trawling KZbin for Dandy Warhols vids so they can slag off the Dandy’s for Anton’s greater glory. I agree-- they are both a different version of the same thing.....whatever that is....I'm not sure ....and neither are truthful -- both are staged, but at the same time, they are very different.. Compare and contrast? Naw - I'm done with college. -- great points.....well taken..... BTW, not to be a bummer, but any thoughts no Anton's meltdown in Melbourne last year?. Booze and crazy meds make you......crazier. He's been MIA since then, at least on social media, so I guess he'll miss the premier of "DIG XX" -- with 45 MORE minutes of footage left on the cutting room floor, and then it updates the film in some way. Wait -- you can't accurately or fairly update DIG XX without considering Anton's problems in Australia last year? That should've been in the "new and improved" DIG XX Version that is out. it was new, real and was ugly. Perhaps you've seen some of the footage - very sad. I think BJM is finally really dead. JMHO, but I do my research. Thanks.

Also, notice Mat standing near Courtney when he's complaining that his band never has fights like BJM and making light of it all as if it's a joke. My take on Dig! was almost the opposite of Zia's. I didn't think the film glorified Anton's disfunction, or portrayed him as any more legit an artist because of it. I thought the film showed two bands starting off as relative equals in talent, with one band succeeding and the other band "failing" because of that disfunction, with some luck involved because the Dandys benefitted from a television commercial and got off easy on the drugs. Ironically, the film has since tied the bands together in such a way that they are, once again, relatively equal in popularity on the road (though probably not in royalties).

Actually the Dandys came off in the doc as the functional band as opposed to the BJM dysfunction, that much was obvious, the worst the Dandy's had to deal with was Courtney's fragile ego. Other than that Zia's wrong about that not being clear. It was just overshadowed a bit by the BJM drama.

Oddly, I thought that the message of Dig! was the opposite of what Zia says here. I thought that the Dandy's - by standing in contrast Newcombe - were the heroes of the doc. In my opinion, they came off as both the better band AND the more responsible (which is to say, less self-centered) of the two acts. I found myself wondering throughout the whole thing why everyone in it kept deferring to Newcombe's "genius." If anything, I thought it was the story of a) someone who had potential, and who could have been a genius if he wasn't both convinced of his own genius himself and afraid of his own success, and b) the better band that ultimately outgrew him and left him behind.

I thought it was a captivating doc. Would be really interesting to do something similar based on the new confines/models/opportunities for current artists. I loved that aspect of DIG the most -- there is a lot of great music out there for audiences but not everyone is going to break big or maybe they will and its due to something no one would have ever expected (which I think BJM being included in intro to Boardwalk Empire which then led to thousands of rolling stones fans to say wow this band is pretty cool might classify as "unexpected")

'Dig' was a riveting and sometimes sad behind the scenes look at the dynamics of two young bands trying to make it in the cutthroat and disingenuous music biz and how they dealt with the chew em up and spit em out world of record company's. But, I disagree with Mia's reaction to the doc...the Dandy's come across as far more responsible and mature than BJJM, especially Anton, who comes across as a talented yet self-indulgent and self-destructive 'Spinal Tap' type A-hole. On a happy note, I'm glad to see that both bands survived the R&R lifestyle and are still performing to this day...good for them...Rock On!

I like the documentary and I especially liked it when I watched it. But now that I watch it later, I do notice that info timoner took some shortcuts. The narration is kind of cringe at times, with these hyperbolic oversimplified utterances. Which wouldn't have been so bad if they didn't have one of the subjects of the films doing the narration. And the timeline is very confusing because they basically stop showing the Brian jonestown massacre after a couple years. Yet they follow the dandy warhols into the turn of the century and beyond.

I I initially loved Dig- and introduced me to BJM and to a lesser extent the dandy’s (sorry dandies) what bothers me most is what she said about it not being totally realistic- also- how would you like to be filmed for 7 years by a trusted filmmaker- and the she uses mostly the worst stuff she can find - tho she says it could have been so much worse- Not for anton at the time- he brushes it off but he still talks about it - said once the film made him feel like a “cockroach “ in terms of personal hygiene and appearance- But the worst thing is that the film leaves watcher with impression that that was the end of BJM/ they probably faded awayX and of course anton MUST be dead- he went through a rough patch with alcohol and drug to self medicate his mental illness- as a soon as he began a new treatment in Berlin, he put the bottle down with no outside support that I’m aware of- and this is highly unusual for a true alcoholic- anyway, my theory is that he never had the disease of addiction in the first place - sure he partied hard- but the party was long gone by 2009 and he knew it. So Anton actually has never been more popular- or more relevant, Imo- It’s too bad some viewers will think he ended up a music casualty- That said, the film exposed him and the dandy’s- so it was a double edged sword Today I don’t like the movie and it’s great that there are now many BJM fans who’s first exposure WAS mot “Dig” - and they will probably love it too- Saw BJM last year and they only played two old songs- the ew ones Rock so hard and make you want to cry

Anton drew from the greatest bands ever to make himself some 'great' music. But Anton is not Lou Reed nor is he on the selfawareness level of spaceman 3. I will listen to these bands before listening to antons music any day. The quote that bjm is the VU of the 90s is still a hilarious observation considering that 30 years later all they could muster was alot of VU/dylan/stones worship. Liberal is a vague term. I have very left wing politics and I am critical of contemporary liberalism from the left. Like Bernie Sanders and Lula do not have the same ideology as Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden or the hedge funds that support third way.. But either way, in this case I'm pretty sure she was referring to her parenting, not necessarily her political ideology. But a huge issue we have in this country is conservatives make no distinction between liberals and the left. As if people that were explicitly anti-capitalist, are on the same side as the HMOs that fund the Biden campaign? I'm sorry but this culture war stuff is not actually at the hub of the ideological struggle. The left wants economic justice primarily, and partisan Democrats in Washington and in the rich suburbs, don't even support a truly public single-payer healthcare. Biden's healthcare plan are to the right of netanyahu and every conservative government in the Oecd. But if you listen to Tim pool, you would think that anyone that isn't a movement conservative, is some part of some broadly defined woke liberal agenda. It's much more complicated than that

Dandy's just aren't as good - it's got nothing to do with romanticising dysfunctional behaviour.

no comparison at all, both bands are equally as amazing in their different ways and yeah I fancied Zia too

Two things can be true at the same time. I think BJM is the better band, but I also think the documentary was grotesquically oversimplified.

BJM isn't really a band, its one guy with rotating musicians for 25 years. @@michaelcorcoran8768

I've watched DIG a bunch of times, and I have to disagree with Zia's interpretation of the message. Sure, the BJM wrote some great songs, but the success arc of the Dandies was clearly evident by the end of the film, whereas Anton was left struggling in obscurity. I don't think the film did anything to glorify Anton or his lifestyle. That being said, I love both bands. I saw the Dandies about a decade ago and Zia gave me a hug after the show. Best night ever.

I think it was Courtney, that mentioned in dig that bjm would go on forever and be remembered and the daddy's wouldn't be remembered and that is kinda what happened
