Nice track. I went and listened to the original after seeing this video (I'd never heard it before, to be honest), and I think this is a pretty good cover. If nothing else, it shows the versatility of the JD-Xi.

schepler2 Thanks! I'm really not into making covers, but people online kept griping about all of the crappy EDM preset stuff that is in the JD-Xi, so I thought I'd make a video showing that you can make any kind of music on the JD-Xi. And also how easy & great the work flow is.

Hello, congrats ! It's briliant. By any chance, do you know which keyboard is played in the original version ? I suspect a prophet, but can't really find out.
@zibbybone4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Doing some quick Google'ing, it seems the general consensus is that the lead synth is an ARP 2600 - which is what is used in footage of live performances. The strings are from a Mellotron on the recording, but live an ARP "Solina" String Ensemble is used. The song is from 1974, so the 2600 makes sense as there weren't many choices for synths then.

Randy raeno thanks for the kind words. The top keyboard, Roland JD-Xi is still in production after 5 years and can be purchased new at retailers for around $500. I see them used on online marketplaces for around $350. The bottom keyboard, Roland SH-01 Gaia, is no longer on production but I’ve seen them sell for under $500 used.

Zibby: Thanks again. Finding all your videos informative. I'm running from the midi out on an old Yamaha keyboard to the midi in on the jdxi just for the bigger keys. But I can't get the arpeggiator or hold button to work on the external keyboard. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm a guitarist new to keyboards, but I'm loving this little synth.

Hi zibbybone, I'm wondering if you may tell me if the Jd-Xi can be used as an external sequencer? I'm looking for an external sequencer that and can be connected to my Nord Lead 4. Never have liked/trusted a computer as sequencer. Thanks!!
@zibbybone9 жыл бұрын
Motifrs Yes, the JD-Xi can be used to sequence external gear. You'll need to turn the volume down on whichever JD-Xi parts are playing external gear. I was actually working on a video using the JD-Xi to control a JD-800, but was having issues with the camera. I've been too busy since then to work on anything synth related. Stay tuned...

0:39 Do you know how to do that sound effect?
@zibbybone4 жыл бұрын
You mean the string sound? Good thing I still have this pattern saved on my JD-Xi. I used a preset from the STRINGS/PAD bank called "TrnsSweepPad" and I'm playing C# & F# together. On the original song, the strings sound came from an electro-mechanical keyboards called a Mellotron which has magnetic tapes of actual recordings that plays (up to about 8 seconds long) when each key is pressed.

Really nice sound. I'm shopping and looking at choosing either the JD-Xi or the Gaia SH-01. From your point of view, which one is better? Which one sounds better?
@zibbybone9 жыл бұрын
leroilightning Both synths are apples and oranges. If you are wanting to learn synthesis or create your own sounds, then choose the Gaia. I consider the JD-Xi a "groove box" with mini keys instead of buttons.
@SynthCamiller7 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking about buying one of these amazing synths, which do you recommend me? Thankyou Zibbybine
@zibbybone7 жыл бұрын
It depends on your needs. If you're new to synthesis and you'd like a keyboard to learn the basics of subtractive synthesis, then the Gaia is what you want. The Gaia is also good for intermediate synth programmers and/or musicians that need a full-size keyboard for performance. The Gaia is no longer in production, but can easily be found in the used market. The JD-Xi offers a lot of bang-for-your-buck. For under $500 USD, you get 2x polyphonic synth engines, 1x digital drum section with over 400 drum sounds to choose from, and 1x analog synth section. All four sections can be recorded into patterns up to 4 bars in length either in real-time by playing the keys or in step-time using the 16 step grid. I demonstrate both of these methods in the video. There is also built-in vocoder, but it take the place of 1x digital synth part and the analog synth part. The only negatives with the JD-Xi is having to "menu dive" to edit most synthesis parameters (there are real-time controls for common things like filter cut-off & resonance) and the mini-keys make it difficult to play chords with adjacent notes. I consider the JD-Xi as a "groove keyboard", great for laying down ideas.

What is the size comparison between the gaia and the cb-jdxi? I'm looking to get a case/gig bag for my gaia and apparently they were completely discontinued, so the only other similar case would be the cb-jdxi's case.

Very nicely done! Can you please tell me how the Gaia was connected to the Jd-Xi? Can Jd-Xi be used as an external sequencer? Thanks
@zibbybone9 жыл бұрын
Motifrs THANKS! Gaia MIDI OUT to JD-Xi's MIDI IN. The JD-Xi CAN be used to control external gear (video coming soon), but in this video, I used the Gaia as a controller when recording the electric piano (mini keys suck for playing those chords) while Local was turned OFF on the Gaia. Then, I changed the Gaia's channel to 8 (not being used on the JD-Xi), turned Local back on then started ad libbing. Audio from JD-Xi was routed into the Gaia's external input, then the mixed output from the Gaia ran straight into the camera.
@Motifrs9 жыл бұрын
zibbybone Thanks for your answer (although it appears to be a little more complex than I thought. I thought the Jd-Xi could act like a loop station, which is capable of recording sound from an external device/instrument through its audio input and create a loop. We definitely look forward to see more wonderful works from you!
@zibbybone9 жыл бұрын
Sorry, the JD-Xi is not capable of recording external sounds as loops or samples. Is a a groove workstation with a simple analog monosynth, drum part and 2 polyphonic digital synth parts that can be virtural analog, PCM or both along with an intuitive pattern sequencer and effects.

Thanks for the kind words. I haven't explored the audio input yet. I can only assume it works just like the mic jack on front with the included goose neck mic: as vocoder or autotune. Maybe I'll check it out this weekend. Stay tuned!

The jd-xi arpeggio doesnt trigger using external keyboards ! Roland we need an update thats utterly ridiculous , tiny frail keys so naturally people will want to use a nice midi full size keyboard and the jd-xi as a sound module , yet you left this basic feature out of its design . Come on ! Give us a firmware update that enables arpeggiator via standard midi keyboards please . That should already be included for the price of these and the cheap key board design on the jd-xi - Pathetic , considering selling mine because of these issues .
