Google unveils 'mind-boggling' quantum computing chip | BBC News

Google has unveiled a new chip which it claims takes five minutes to solve a problem that would currently take the world's fastest super computers ten septillion - or 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years - to complete.
The chip is the latest development in a field known as quantum computing - which is attempting to use the principles of particle physics to create a new type of mind-bogglingly powerful computer.
Google says its new quantum chip, dubbed "Willow", incorporates key "breakthroughs" and "paves the way to a useful, large-scale quantum computer."
However experts say Willow is, for now, a largely experimental device, meaning a quantum computer powerful enough to solve a wide range of real-world problems is still years - and billions of dollars - away.

Would love to have this bloke on number/computer-phile, he's got a very mild manner and it is very difficult to make something like quantum mechanics understandable, hell - even the physicists working with the thing don't understand it half the time. That's one of the reasons so many people revere Richard Feynman - he made the almost incomprehensible shit you can imagine understandable to anyone with half a brain.

He missed one actual big risk, historically preserved encrypted data. Everything that we encrypt today, nearly, Is vulnerable to decryption whenever these computers come online in a big way. So if you've got an encrypted hard drive, today, or somebody records your banking transactions .. your encrypted transactions .. today, they can decrypt them like nothing whenever these computers come online euphemistically tomorrow. Because today we are NOT using so-called post quantum encryption algorithms, we use but he called public key encryption By and large. The future is actually pretty scary, this is coming from a computer science person. So, Rich will be safe, Poor will have all of their information unlocked. 😢

No he didn't! He completely left out the part that it uses alternate realities to be able to do the same number of calculations of a regular CPU but instead of doing them in a linear fashion is does them all simultaneously using different dimensions. Do you have an idea what the proves? It proves the many worlds theory of quantum mechanics. It proves free will and so it proves that part of us exists outside of space and time. It proves the existence of the soul or that we are living in a simulation.

Yeah I'm actually not sure if she was being sarcastic or sincere, it could easily have been either. I think maybe that's an uncollapsed superposition that only resolves at the point she tries to explain what he just said to a third party. 😆 A lot of technical explanations are like that; you feel like you fully understand them at the time, but then you go to regurgitate them in conversation later, and you realize you don't actually have any command of the topic that the explanation you digested earlier seemed to make so clear. As someone whose hobbies and interests are all technical or otherwise complicated and arcane, every now and then I feel like I'm acting out the recurring bit from that old Home Improvement sitcom in which his neighbor would give him great wise sage advice over the fence in the yard and then he'd go to repeat it to his wife or kids or coworker and massacre it complete with a jumbled up quote. Cheap joke formula for sure, but truer to life than I'd like. This year it was some stuff I'd recently read about possible superradiance in microtubules, which would be some (at least anecdotal) evidence for quantum effects at work in neurology, potentially reopening the (previously farfetched on account of biological systems being too warm and wet) idea of consciousness being quantum... That's all super-fascinating stuff, and so I tried to repeat these ideas, to... my father who is a MD and his wife who is also in the medical field. Rarely have I ever felt like such a babbling doofus 🤣

Also, quantum computing cannot be broadly applied to compute problems and is very niche in what it can compute. Certainly an advantage but I would be careful of thinking this as a computer. It's more like a Quantum Processing Unit. Decades out but if there is another industrial revolution, It is going to be either this, space flight, or a nuclear fusion.
