One question i’m going to throw out here: i understand the dividend tax difference thanks to those Irish based US ETFs. But shouldn’t each individual research what are tax treaties between our own countries and Ireland as well? What if Ireland has no tax treaty with my country? I see no information about this anywhere, i’m afraid to get only 15% tax on dividend but maybe additional tax on profit. Or Ireland never has tax on capital gain, no matter the country? Thanks 😊

Detailed taxation information by Bogleheads: www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Nonresident_alien_investors_and_Ireland_domiciled_ETFs#No_Irish_taxes_of_any_kind_for_Ireland_domiciled_ETFs "Ireland applies no taxes of any kind on non-Irish residents who hold Ireland domiciled ETFs. Ireland domiciled ETFs are therefore completely 'tax transparent' to investors, making them preferable to US domiciled ETFs for investors in any country with poor or no US tax treaty coverage, and often acceptable to investors even in countries with good US tax treaty coverage." (Source: The Bogleheads guide above) Correction: 1. For CSP1 = their unit price is GBp 30,266 - the small p stands for pence (100 penny = 1 pound), which means its actually GBP 302.66 per share!

I live in Ireland and we have to pay 41% tax on ETFs every 8 years even if I sold them 7 years ago 😭. It’s also illegal to invest in US domiciled ETFs. Only non-Irish citizens benefit from our tax system while the citizens pay the taxes that the corporations don’t pay.

Yeah, I also read about that when I tried to gather information about Irish withholding tax. Don‘t know why Ireland is so harsh on their own population when they, at the same time, are very attractive for foreigners to invest into Irish-domiciled ETFs. Since you are Irish: Do you know if there is a withholding tax for people who live in a country that has no double tax treaty with Ireland? Ireland claims withholding tax on ETF distributions then or not?

Hello there! I have been watching all your SP500 ETF series and they have been really helpful. A few days ago I finished setting up my Interactive brokers account and so I decided to invest in 1 stock of ishares CSPX (around 72 USD). However I noticed that there were a number of "CSPX" ETFS in IBKR, but I found one that I think is the correct one. That is the "CSPX ISHARES CORE S&P 500 - LSEETF", so is that ETF the one you show in the video, or at least is it an accumulating and tax saving one? Thanks in advance. I am asking this because when I added that ETF to my watchlist, the page showed that it was a UK ETF and not an Irish one, which seemed a bit strange to me.

yes the LSEEF seems to be the correct one. Although it will show as UK ETF but if you go to the ETF details, it will be mentioned there that it is Ireland domiciled

Hello! The iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (CSPX) is indeed listed on multiple exchanges. The one you're referring to, listed on London Stock Exchange (LSE), is the correct one. It is Irish-domiciled for tax purposes, but it's traded on different exchanges including the LSE. It's an accumulating fund, meaning dividends are automatically reinvested. Note that CSPX now costs around 460 USD per share ya

Thank you so much for creating this video. Best one on s&p500 for non-us residents by far! You covered quite a few issues that other KZbinrs never mentioned. I'm a newbie and appreciate this a lot. Would you mind clarifying something for me please? Why is there a huge difference in unit price between the CSPX and the VUAA for example? I mean how can there be such a difference when they are essentially tracking the same index? Same for the CSP1 - unit price of GBP30266!!! vs the CSPX priced at USD415.55. I just cannot understand this. Thanks again for creating such helpful content for beginners. Your channel deserves much more subscribers.
@ZietInvests2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marica! 1. For Unit Price VUAA vs CSPX - the difference can be simply explained by the number of outstanding shares issued by the fund (ETF) to the public float. Know that share price = company value divided by number of outstanding shares, this just means VUAA issues more shares to the public such that it is cheaper per unit price - fundamentally there is little to no difference to them! (Can refer Berkshire Hathaway A share priced at a astronomical 400k+/share, or read up on why AAPL split their shares 5 times in the past) 2. For CSP1 = their unit price is GBp 30266 - the small p stands for pence (100 penny = 1 pound), which means its actually GBP 302.66 per share! Hope this clarifies!

Dear Ziet, as most Msia/SG brokers such as IBKR/Tiger/SC/DBS/Maybank do not allow fractional shares of LSE-listed stocks/ETFs such as CSPX, would buying VOO/IVV be more efficient in terms of dollar cost averaging? Without fractional shares there may be a significant amount of idle cash (up to 470USD based on current share prices) just sitting around in my IBKR account each month... Thank you for your time and really appreciate your videos!
@ZietInvests2 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher, LSE does not allow fractional shares trading, it is not the fault of any brokers yeah. Whether or not it is more cost efficient totally depends on your firepower - VOO and CSPX should be more or less the same right in terms of unit price. You can always go for the ones you deem more "efficient" for your current circumstance, and when you have better firepower, just switch over to LSE ETFs for better tax efficiency lor, it's not a huge deal in the short term😄

@ZietInvests2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony, thank you so much for your nice comment! If you are a European, there will be restriction whereby you are unable to trade US ETFs (no thanks to the EU's PRIIP Regulation!) Other families should be fine, make sure you do a bit of due diligence on them, although I personally would just recommend Vanguard, iShares by BlackRock, StateStreet, Invesco etc. Amundi should be fine too since its one of the largest European fund. Xtrackers and BNP (french) is a little too small for my liking.

Great video! Since CSPX reinvest my dividend, does that mean I don't need to pay for 15% withholding tax if I buy CSPX? (I'm from Malaysia)
@ZietInvests3 жыл бұрын
Hi Siew, you will still need to pay. This is because dividends paid by US companies to CSPX will be withheld by 15% (US WHT rate on Ireland), so you will be receiving net 85% dividend as a Malaysian. The difference is only at the WHT rate: 1. US > Malaysia = 30%. (Hence, Net 30%) 2. US > Ireland = 15%. Then Ireland > Malaysia = 0%. (Hence, Net 15%)

Hi Ziet, great video as always. Have some questions: 1. What do you mean by the ETFs are "not passively managed". 2. Why would a passive investing approach be better suited for the accumulating ETF? 3. Why would distributing ETF have lower trading spreads? Thanks alot in advance for your time to respond. Keep up the wonderful contribution to the community!
@ZietInvests3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chan, 1. Not passively managed, means actively managed, which means the manager will buy and sell usually on a daily/more frequent basis - so the fund is readjusted very frequently as opposed to passive funds that rebalance maybe once every 3 months. 2. Not to be mistaken, accumulating/distributing is dividend policy, nothing to do with the nature of the fund management. 3. If you are referring to the US ETFs, it could be due to more people trading/investing in it, so higher trading volume, hence lower trading spreads. The market is dynamic so it changes from time to time.

Thanks for the informative videos. That was some in depth analysis. Correct me if I'm wrong, but based on the portfolios you shared with us in youtube, you did not invest in any of the ETFs, the main reason being the 15% withholding tax? Any other possible reason that we should know of? Thanks.
@ZietInvests3 жыл бұрын
Hi, it is correct I don't hold any S&P 500 ETFs, not because of the withholding tax, but because of my current investment risk appetite and objective. Index funds are too diversified for my current objective - to grow my wealth, which is why I prefer riskier investments such as individual stocks for time being. Might add index funds into the mix down the road for sure!

Hey Ziet! I am so glad I just watched this video. I did your follow along for Interactive Brokers setup and I have been accepted!! Knowing the alternatives to these US ETFs are life changing as I am European and can only purchase the alternatives. What % do you recommend goes into each allocation? I will definitely go with CSPX, VWRA, ISAC and EMI. Please advise on % allocation!! I look forward to hearing from you!
@ZietInvests3 жыл бұрын
Hello Kim! First and foremost, thank you so much for your kind words, it really warms my heart 🥰 Regarding the % allocation, this is a very subjective question because everyone is in a different financial status and pursuing different investment goals + have different risk appetite. That said, there is no right and wrong with the allocation, some people even go all-in VWRA 100% (who are we to say they are wrong? they are taking average of the entire world market). If you ask me, as a young millennial, I still have a long runway before I any major expenses in life (wedding/house/kids etc.), I would go for more stocks, then my immediate focus would be CSPX or QQQ for the higher growth. Among the 4 you recommended, my preference would be CSPX > VWRA > ISAC > EMI, the reason why I put EMI at the last is because emerging market has historically underperformed most of the popular indices mentioned in this video, and their political uncertainties remains unknown (re China), but they could pay off in the long run due to the size of their market (only time will tell). So happy that my content was helpful to you! Back to your question, there will be 2 answers, a short one and a long one since i dont know what are your preferences. Short answer, IBKR, cheaper, executes faster, lower minimum threshold. Long answer, if you have a large capital to begin, and you prefer to have better customer support, then Saxo would be a better choice since IBKR customer support may not be the best. I personally know a friend that switched from Saxo to IBKR and never looked back. Hope this helps!

Hi Ziet, I wanted to know your opinion on index fund selection between CSPX vs VUSD. I know one of the different between both is on the dividend handling. I had a thought if I invest in VUSD and the dividend will be distributed instead of accumulation. But in the IB under account management -> dividend selection, user can choose to elect for reinvest instead of receive cash (dividend received). Therefore, can I say if I manually tweak this selection, will my VUSD ETF dividend become accumulated/reinvested? So somehow it same like CSPX? Plus point the lower unit price on VUSD compared with CSPX makes it more better buying power to invest for DCA. (can buy more if price dipped). Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Nazrin, good idea but i think it wont work because dividend reinvestment would only work in the US market where fractional shares and etfs are available, not for the UK stock market :x

🙂 Hi Ziet, just want to correct your misinterpretation of the currency. At 11:00. That CSP1 30,266 is in GBX (pence) not GBP (pounds). So, GBX 30,266 = GBP 302 = USD 376 (today's rate) cheaper than CSPX. Also with 11:07 that is only GBP297. **Since many stocks are traded in pence rather than pounds, stock exchanges may use GBX to indicate the distinction between pence and pounds.

I have connected Irish bank to my accounts and the bank address is in Ireland which was my old house, I used to rent . My question is “should I pay taxes? If so, how do I do it and to which country ? Looking forward to your response. Thank you in advance.

Hi there, I believe your taxation should follow your Tax Identification Number, as well as your current residency. It is indeed a very complicated position to be in, even I myself can’t answer your accurately because I am no expert in that matter as well. Best to just approach a tax consultant and get it cleared off - I am sure the small fee will pay off the long run! Side note: You don’t have to actually “pay taxes” yourself, IBKR will withheld your taxable amount automatically for you based on your tax code.

Can i just ask: Where the f are you guys finding proper lists of these ETF that circulate on the various Brokerages? Like when i know, i want to invest in an S&P 500 ETF for example, i know that the name of the Index is S&P 500. But if i type S&P 500 in the search-field of IB for example (since you referred to it here) i don't get a proper list of available ETFs to choose from. Where can i find information on what available ETFs there are and what their differences are? I just can't find a list of "their" ETFs for me to compare, without knowing the Tickers/Names beforehand. It's so difficult....

First and foremost, I want to thank you for the fantastic content you put in your videos. Really much appreciated. Now on the subject. As concerning American ETFs my understanding is that these cannot be purchased in Europe unless you are registered as a professional trader / investor or you sell puts (options) and you get executed, i.e. obliged to buy the underlying stock. Do you know if the Irish-based SP500 would be considered non-US and could therefore be purchased from Europe, by any chance, or I am just dreaming?
@ZietInvests8 ай бұрын
Hey, thank you for the kind words! You're right about the restrictions on purchasing American ETFs in Europe due to regulations like PRIIPs which require a KID (Key Information Document). However, you're on the right track with Irish-domiciled S&P 500 ETFs. These are designed to be compliant with European regulations and can indeed be purchased by European investors. They're a popular choice because they offer a way to invest in the S&P 500 while being tax-efficient for non-US residents. So no, you're not dreaming - Irish-based S&P 500 ETFs can be a viable option for you!

Hi Zeit, I’m currently owning some SPY but it isn’t really an ETF but CFD, in which case would I still be subject to US tax? This is Maestro & I’m from M’sia too!
@ZietInvests3 жыл бұрын
Hey Maestro! From what I read on IBKR (www.interactivebrokers.co.uk/en/index.php?f=deliveryExerciseActions&p=corpActionCFDs), US-based indices CFD will give you the gross dividend amount instead of the withheld leftovers. That said, I've not traded CFD so can't really provide you any personal input.

Great video. Would have saved me 1 years of learning if found your channel earlier! Just curious on Synthetic ETFs, I read that it is a more tax efficient way to invest in US since investors will not directly own the underlying stocks and will not be subject to any witholding tax. I understand the counterparty risk is there, but I found this accumulating S&P 500 ETF tracker (iShares S&P 500 Swap UCITS ETF) which is under State Street Custodian. Would this make the risk lower and worth the additional WHT savings. Let me know what are your thoughts.
@ZietInvests2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mubarak - thank you so much for your kind words! Re your question - to be frank I am not very sure about it not being classified as a US-domiciled asset (hence lower WHT), because when people usually invest in Synthetic ETFs, they usually do it for the lower expense ratio and lower tracking error (the reward that comes with the counterparty risk). However, on further read: "Under US tax law, certain types of derivatives are subject to an equivalent tax withholding rate when they pass through “dividend- equivalent” payments. Specifically, when a US bank writes a swap on an index with a non-US counterparty, it is generally required to withhold US dividend tax at the same rate as would be appropriate for a physical investment by that same counterparty. This would seem to level the playing field between physical and synthetic replication strategies, but the details matter. The same rule that imposes this tax treatment on derivatives also specifies certain exemptions, and the MSCI World index meets these. This means that while a European-domiciled physically replicating fund will generally be able to achieve a maximum of 85% of the dividend yield of the US holdings in their MSCI World portfolio, a synthetic fund can theoretically achieve up to 100% of the full gross dividend amount. With an average dividend yield for US large-cap stocks of approximately 2%, this exemption means synthetic funds can potentially achieve up to 30bps of additional performance on the US exposures, which equates to over 18bps on MSCI World." Source: etf.invesco.com/sites/default/files/imce/ETFphysisch-synthetisch%20ChrisMellor%202019_06%20E.pdf I think you are right - it does come with WHT tax benefit too due to its nature as a financial derivative!

First I want to thank you for the video. One question though: 3:32 I don‘t know if I am informed correctly, but isn‘t it true that you would receive 85 dollars in that example even if the country where you are tax-resident does not have a double tax treaty with Ireland? I think I once read that there is no withholding tax on distributions from Irish ETFs in general (except Irish people or tax-residents in Ireland). But I am not really sure about this. Does someone know?

Hi, good question, from my understanding most companies without a tax treaty with Ireland usually has a tax treaty with US. But if thats not the case (for selected countries), then perhaps going for US ETFs directly would be a better to avoid double taxation - again, im not very sure about that so best check with someone with the knowledge on this!
