Ziggy Marley - Black My Story (Not History) [Not History] Lyrics
Black my story, black my story
Not his-tory, black my story
Black my story, black my story
Not his-tory, black my story
From education to civlization
From astrology straight to biology
Black my story, black my story
Not his-tory, black my story
African glory, african glory
What we want to see, is african glory
From Marakeshi to Egypt,Rio-De-Oro
From Cape Town to Addis-Ababa and Congo
African glory, african glory
What we want to see
African liberty, give it to me
SOLO
Oh, black my story, black my story
No not his-tory, black my story
African glory, African glory
What we got to see, must be african liberty
From Mozambique to Libya
Oh land of the Uganda
From Senegal to Somalia
Oh the land of good Ghana
African glory, African glory
What we want to see is African liberty
Black my story, black my story
Black my story, not his-tory
A black my story, I and story
Black my story, not his-tory
Black I story, black my story
Not his-tory, an African glory, chuc'aw African glory

Damn this song is soo underrated. This should be on every African playlist no matter what country they’re from as a reminder of our royal linage. “Black my story not HIS story “

We still have this record album at home. I was 14 when my Mom brought it home. I used to play it on our turntable in the mornings before walking to school in our Johannesburg township❤

This song was originally written and performed by the Dallol Reggae Band formed by young Ethiopian brothers who immigrated to the US to launch their music career. They initially performed traditional Ethiopian music but later begun to be drawn to the love of reggae music. Members of the band, Zeleke Gessesse (lead vocalist) and Mulugeta Gessesse (rhythm guitarist) originally wrote the song in Amharic (an official working language of Ethiopia). The song was later translated into English and performed by Ziggy Marley, which later became the opening track in his Grammy winning album 'One Bright Day' released in 1989. In Black My Story, the band can be heard backing Ziggy in Amharic chants: 'tarik bahlachin' (our history, our culture), 'awo awo' (yes, yes), 'yetibeboch mekidim' (the pioneers of civilisations), 'ayzoh ayzoh' (carry on/stay strong), 'andinet behibret' (unity in cooperation), 'awo awo' (yes, yes), 'netsanet kibrachin' (our freedom, our dignity), 'ayzoh ayzoh' (carry on/stay strong). What led to this collaboration was the invitation the band received in 1982 from Rita Marley to perform in Jamaica (Kingston) at the first concert organised to celebrate the birthday of Bob Marley, a year after his passing away. Their performance impressed the audience and the Marley family. The band later performed and toured numerous times with Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers during the 80s and 90s. Dallol band was the official band for Ziggy Marley from 1988 to 1991. Together, they recorded best selling albums, 'Conscious Party' and 'One Bright Day'. Addis Gessesse who managed the Dallol Band also later became the music manager of Ziggy Marley and most of the Marley brothers and including Rita Marley for many years. The strong professional and personal connections that the Dallol band and its members had with the Marley family played a crucial role in the development of Ziggy Marley's and his brothers' music career. This special partnership made it possible to organise the celebration Bob Marley's 60th birthday in Addis Ababa with a theme of 'Africa Unite' concert.

@Rediet Tesfaye *THANK* *YOU* for sharing this!!! I was always quite curious about these background vocals; however, I didn't realize they were Amharic chants. I knew it obviously wasn't "English" but, anyways,, I am very *grateful* to you for to now have this knowledge on the background & information on how the song & collaboration actually came to be. Peace & Blessings to you!

I've been to Sunsplash all over the unites states and was sad to be only one white guy of a few to attend a concert in Mesa, Arizona in early 1980's! To hell with the haters, i skanked and sang through Black Uluru's set, Imagine how the native American Indians are really looked at by racist white settlers on Indian land! what a shame to hold hate for people just because somebody taught them that way to be as well as from not understanding different cultures.
