Thank you for this very reasonable and based video, especially the final sentences! What I want to add, that for Sony APS-C, at least since the a6000 release in February 2014, it has been "marry the body, date the lens"! There are now so many high quality affordable lenses out there, basically any Sony E-Mount APS-C camera is a powerhouse again. Sigma Trio, all the f2.8 zooms, the new Sony wide angle lenses - they totally breath new life into the system. My current favourite EDC is my dang old, beaten Sony a5000 together with the great Sony 11mm f1.8. Super light, compact, and there's not much I give away in terms of IQ. The keys tasks are: configure the camera to your needs (key and dial settings), and edit your pics. I started editing my JPGs in Apple Photos, and my pics became so much better!
@TomsJurjaks Жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree with you more. Even the newer cameras, from all brands arguably are equally good, but the Sony E-Mount is what truly pushes it forward a whole step. Well said.

I have this A6000 and A6400. I like the A6000 for EDC with either Sigma 30mm 1.4 or even TTartisans 25 mm 2.0 manual for a more vintage experience and smaller, travel sizing vs Sigma 30. I prefer the A6000 to say….the popular Ricoh GRIII series because: flash-viewfinder-battery life-tilt screen-ability to remove dust from sensor-not too much bigger than Ricoh either. This camera still VERY relevant in 2022 and almost 2023. Good video Toms, TY.

@@ReiszRiann They can both produce same results, A6000 is lighter BUT is not not weather sealed, has older menu system and a slightly less comprehensive AF technology. I'm another one with an A6000 I carry every day; It has the 16-50 kit lens. I always have a spare battery with the camera. Sometimes I carry a Pentax 77mm lens with adaptor; the focus peaking works well with it. The A6000 has the same sensor as my Pentax K3; high ISO performance is equally good, though different from the Pentax. I've taken shots in dimly lit pubs with the Sony and kit lens; I did some last Sunday. I don't like the eye level viewfinder so I only use it in full sun when I can't see the rear screen. It's possible to tilt the pop up flash to get bounce flash, and I've found that the camera remembers the last distance I focused at, when I switch it back on. The A6000 is pretty good, especially for what I paid for it.

Although I agree with most points in your video, I gotta say that for an EDC camera, there is one feature that you want that the A6000 doesn't have : weather sealing. Unlike other cameras, the thing about EDC cameras is that it's the camera that you're always carrying with you, and you don't have the luxury of looking at the forecast to know which day is good to get out. Especially for beginners, having weather sealing means they don't have to worry if their camera is getting a little wet. Beginner camera means affordable, so looking at the options I would say either a Fujifilm X-T1, or Sony A6300 would be perfect candidates. The Fuji even has some of the most gorgeous JPEGs, so the workflow of taking the picture then transferring it to your phone without edit and post it instantly is even easier. Those first gen Sony bodies had quite funky colors and not everyone is a fan of that.
@TomsJurjaks Жыл бұрын
Very fair point Matthieu. I agree. And I've heard loads of good stuff about Fuji in general. But to be honest, I've taken my a6000 out in the drizzle and some lighter rain many times and so far without any problems. Its also not like one drop will end the camera. If the budget is not a problem, then of course I would recommend weather sealed bodies, but for most beginners, this feature does not justify much higher price tag as most beginners shoot in near perfect conditions. But of course its good to know what other options are and what are the limitations of A6000.

Hi there, I have this camera. My husband had purchased it for me many moons ago. I'm an amateur at best. Took a class that I still don't understand too much, but in changing lenses around during the class, I now have spots. Didn't know this until after my trip to Australia where the blue skies have black spots in the sky. I've tried my best to clean the sensor, but I still can't manage to get one troublesome area. I was cringing every time I saw the the camera without a lens in the video. So, that is the first thing I want to do/learn is how to clean the sensor. Second, my husband has purchased a couple of lens for me because while the one it came with is fine for EDC (to me), I would like to capture "regular" and then be able to zoom in, but with one lens and not having to switch it up. It had come with a second lens, but I don't use it because I don't feel it zooms enough 5.5-210. The wide angle I got after the class 10-18. And then 70-350 , which I love, but that is for zooming only. So, my first goal is to clean the sensor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I used the a6000 as my main camera up until early this year. I also had a A7R and the APSC format is definitely more portable - especially with Sony. - I now use a A7R IV for both APSC and FF Sony lenses. The thing I would point out is that it is portable and easy to carry - for an interchangeable lens camera, which is a major qualifier anyone considering an a6000 for "edc" should consider. It isn't pocketable and you are going to have to set aside space in your bag. The only way it gets close to a pocketable camera is if you use the 16mm or 20mm pancake lens - but those aren't the best lens (the 16mm 2.8 is especially terrible). With the vast majority of lens options (and arguably all of the desirable lens options) it (and its younger siblings) are cameras you have to "carry with intent" rather than something that can be with you always anywhere. A "premium compact" one inch camera like the Rx100 series from Sony, G1/5/7X from canon, Lumix TZ from Panasonic is going to be actually pocketable and, for me at least - the best EDC option. You get a usable viewfinder (with most), enough manual controls and good enough versatility to get shots comparable to an interchangeable lens system. Heck, if its got a f1.8 max aperture, you can even get some passable Bokeh going. IMHO the Ricoh Gr 3 and the Canon G1X 3 are the only large(r) sensor compact cameras that are really pocketable. Everything else has too big a "lens bump" and doesn't get to the same level of portability. I did stitch together a Nex5R (which has a considerably more compact body than the a6000) and paired it with a 20mm f2.8 - that was pretty damn compact. But honestly I prefer my RX100 in terms of picture quality - which was a bit of a shock. It might be the more modern sensor technology (from the m4 onwards the RX100 has stacked BSI CMOS sensor. The Sony APSC cameras have only just had their first BSI sensor in the a6700 and there still isn't a stacked option), newer colour science or maybe better quality glass compared to the 20f2.8.

Thanks a lot! Regarding your problem - you can actually adjust the look of your JPEGs under "Creative Syle". Add contrast and saturation to your liking if you want more punch and you should be good to go. Hope that helps.

Very helpful, thanks a lot! Have to check this out - to transfer to phone. Sometimes I travel abroad for photoshoot and tried several options not having a laptop with me. Had the a6000 back in the days but sold it and kind of regret it. Instead I got the a5100 and I am happy with that one. I am a big fan of the Nex 7 and still use it, and the Nex 5n... Good luck with your channel.

It’s definitely a cumbersome experience transferring using the app, Sony could really improve the experience. But it does its job for sure. And thank you buddy!

I used to own an A6000 and a Sony 50mm F1.8 and I loved it as everything you've said in the video. However as time goes by and my needs change, I don't feel comfortable with Sony cameras anymore (not just the A6000). I'm an enthusiast shooter and spending so much time editing the photos is not something I really like. That's why I switched to Fujifilm. The color of the JPEG is so good I that I edit photos with very basic tools.
@LLeung656 Жыл бұрын
Just wondering which model of Fujifilm do you use? Is the color quality the same for all fujufilm cameras? Thanks.

Hi Tom - bang on video as usual. I had bought the a6000 in 2015, sold it in 2021. Bought full frame Sony after that (a7c and then a74). Then I bought a6600, but sold it after 3-4 months - not worth the price. Today my EDC is canon m6 ii with a 22 mm f2. It’s super great with 33 MP and a wonderfully responsive touch screen (like the new Sony full frames). Please check it out. Of course it’s to be discontinued, but I still bought it - lovely build and form factor.
@TomsJurjaks Жыл бұрын
Hey Seema, what a journey you've had! Awesome that you experienced so many cameras. I've heard a lot of good things about that M6 for daily use. There is also a bit of hype with the Fuji X100V too, nice design and compact. Would love to try out different brand cameras for sure.
@Easycook_withSK Жыл бұрын
You are so right about the Fuji - I did so want it but two things stopped me (1) fixed lens (2) price - it’s in short supply, hence selling at a massive premium in india

I got this camera in 2015 but sold it. These day they have way better glass to pair with it I think it's definitely worth getting again.

You are right, its the lenses that make the difference. And its not that easy to get it as its discontinued but still there are plenty of second hand ones available.

Ive been a wedding photog for over 10 years and shot Canon. I purchased a brand new a6000 I believe in 2016 or 17 because I wanted a small travel camera and to try out Sony. well, I have since fully switched to Sony and I'm happy with it but now I'm debating a designated EDC camera. I still have and use my a6000 but thought about upgrading to an a6300 (better EVF and Mic input) but I also have an a7II that I don't use for anything. my options for EDC are: Keep using the a6000 or use the a7II or sell the a7II and buy an used a6300. I cant make up my mind! I did just pick up a Sony 24mm 2.8 G that worked so well with the a6000. I'm really digging it!
@TomsJurjaks Жыл бұрын
Hey Toni. My 2 cents, I probably wouldn't go with a6300 as its still old camera and mostly videography related. If you only wanna do photos, check A6100 or for extra video features a6400. If you dont mind not having viewfinder, im really digging the ZV-E10. Especially with the lenses you have, must be nice setup. Let me know what you decide?
@ToniLovesSkateboarding Жыл бұрын
@@TomsJurjaks I think you're right. as a matter of fact, I just found an used a6100 for a decent price at a local camera shop. Thats gonna be the way. Get that and sell my a7II w/ 85mm 1.8. Thanks!

I absolutely love your videos. How about canon 4000d camera? Can you compare between Canon 4000d vs Sony a6000 please. It'll help me a lot to wipe out my confusion.
@christianboddum8783 Жыл бұрын
I have 2 NEX-5 and a a6300 (mostly for the viewfinder), but for a long time my everyday carry was a DSC-H3 because it has the right size for the pocket in a jacket and as long as it is daylight it works quite well and it has built in flash and decent glass (Zeiss). I'm experimenting with indoor lowlight no-flash shooting and my a6300 with a SONY ZA F4 16-70 is getting the best results so far. I have some good prime lenses but they don't give me enough depth of field in my experience. I try to avoid any postprocessing except cropping.

My edc camera is ofc the A6000 but i do sometimes also carry my nex7 or panasonic gm1. For sony lenses i usually use the 50mm FE 1.8 or minolta 100mm F2 with an la-ea4 adapter. Panasonic i have no choice but to use my one and only 20mm f1.7.

24 megapixel isn't an Instagram concern. You should always shoot as big as possible so you can crop if you need to.

I like the A6000 but I'd probably recommend the ZV-E10 over the a6XXX series currently. You just get far more features for the money.

I bought this camera in 2014 and paid just over $700 CAD for it. I didn't use it much, then, because I didn't know how to use it, other than in auto. Now that I've gained some knowledge about photography I take it with me all the time, but I wouldn't use it for video because of the lack of 4k. I would prefer the Sony ZV-10 as an EDC.

Hey Afnan! Thanks a lot. Sigma 30mm f1.4 and Sigma 56mm f1.4 is my choice for prime lenses. Regarding zooms, I am not sure if there are good budget zoom lenses, they cost a bit and it’s for a reason. Save up and buy something like Tamron 17-70mm f2.8

A6000 is not that good if you want to do videos. Instead look for ZV-E10. Nevertheless, both cameras are good and there is not that much difference in their performance, however Sony wins when it comes to Lenses. Canon M-Mount has horrible choice of lenses so I would stay away if I was you.
@iRahz. Жыл бұрын
Great video, Toms. This is the camera I have and I am fairly new to photography. Do you have any recommendations for a first lens? I am currently using the kits lens, but want to purchase a new one. I am thinking about getting the Sony SEL35F18 35mm f/1.8 Prime Fixed Lens. What do you think?
@bobnason4147 Жыл бұрын
I'd recommend using the kit lens(es) for several thousand images then you will know what focal length is your favourite or whether you need something wider or longer. You really need to understand your current equipment and what limitations it has for your style of shooting and desired output. Costs excepted, the easiest thing to do is fill camera bags with cameras & lenses that hardly/never see the light of day.
@yalborap Жыл бұрын
To follow up on the other comment you got, the big thing your second lens (since the kit lens is your first) should do a thing you keep wishing you could do. That might be more reach, it might be wider views for tight spaces, it might be getting up close to small subjects, or it might be those lovely creamy backgrounds. But find that thing, and buy a lens that'll get you solving that problem. Also, don't overlook any old lenses that friends or family might have! I mostly shoot with some 70s era film camera lenses that I'd already inherited, using a $10 adapter. Massively opens up your options.
