The ZILDJIAN WORKOUT project was created to give YOU the opportunity to "learn-while-you-drum" along with the top Zildjian artists. Covering three levels of technical demand, each video will cover several exercises that will not only help you improve your fundamental skills, but also expose you to the drumming philosophies of some of today's master instructors!
In this ZILDJIAN WORKOUT episode, Scott Johnson breaks down (we mean REALLY breaks down!) two of his most popular "Lick of the Week" rams: the "Hero Lick" and "Chut a Chuts"!
Grab your sticks & practice pad - and get ready for a workout!

When I was a high school freshman a long time ago, and was in marching band, in the drumline, on snaredrum, our band director brought in this record for us. It was the 1976 DCI World Championships. No internet, no KZbin, no Instagram, just that record. He based the bands arrangement of "Legend of the One Eyed Sailor" for our show on that BlueDevils performance, rather than anything that Chuck Mangione played. I believe you may have been in that drumline. It represented the gold standard for us. We weren't a world class drum corps, just a high school band from a rural North Carolina community. We must have listened to that record a hundred times. We had six snare drums and practiced rudiments and open rolls together in a circle for probably 2 hours a day to get as tight as possible and sound like one player, "tight like the Blue Devils". The performances on that record from the Blue Devils, Madison Scouts, Phantom Regiment, and Bridgemen left us in awe and were a huge inspiration for us all. All the rudimental patterns and permutations we worked on for 4 years are still with me as an old guy today, and when I sit down at my kit to practice in my basement they still make me smile. I just wanted to let you know the widespread and long lasting influence your corp and drumline had on all of us players a long time ago, far away in the mountains and foothills of NC. Thanks Scott.

Fantastic ! Scott reminds me of Guy Lefèvre, my snare drum teacher when I took drum lessons from Emmanuel Bourseault in Paris in 1979. (Moktar Samba had been one of his students... and what a student !) Guy had published his own method of "Superior Technique for The Snare Drum" that year, and was "Drum Major" of Paris Air Force Band. Guy was very different physically from Scott, but his rigor, his incredible technique and his mastery of the instrument were almost identical....

When I was in high school I had a teacher that played tap drags with a flam on the second note of the diddle. I think it sounds neat but I've never to this day seen anyone play it, talk about, nothin.

2:38 could’ve worse… at you’re not Emmanuel DeLeon saying “let’s slow it down” and literally playing 10 beats faster

genius communication... laid back, relaxed, but controlled... good instructional technique (like is anyone surprised? Guy is aligned with more world championships and more drum titles than anyone on the planet)
