This was the last piece of music I shared with my grandpa. Unable to leave his bed let alone spend time in his room with 31 guitars, he replied, “Amazing!!!” In the weeks leading to his passing, this became my all-time favorite music performance. Now, months later listening to it again for the first time, I’m reminded of the never-ending and inexplicably positive influence, not just musically, that he had on me. I have a whole life in front of me, and I know he’d want me to keep enjoying this piece - so that’s what I’ll do. Thank you all for this incredible, incredible piece of music.

My first exposure to the otherworldly drumming capability of this man was when I stumbled upon the Snarky Puppy "Lingus" video a few years ago. My mind was blown and not only did it make me a huge Larnell Lewis fan, but it was also my first exposure to Snarky Puppy. I thank whatever Gods were looking down on me that day because I've found so much more incredible music since then that I would have never known even existed. This video is one of them, too. Had the KZbin algorithm not known I was already into Snarky Puppy and had searched other Larnell videos, this would not have been recommended to me. My only regret about this whole thing is that these Zildjian/Ghost-Note drummer showcase videos were recorded in a studio not far from where I live. I would have never made the invite list, and probably wouldn't have found a way in, but I would have like to have tried, dammit!

It's impressive that he can have these ideas, but truly incomprehensible that he can execute them in real time, all in one take, in front of an audience, while grooving as hard and tastefully as Soan, Gadd, or Purdie. my two most favorites parts of this play: 1. Larnell includes Nate the percussionist on that solo part. Beautifully done. 2. The ending where he smashed the cymbals with his hands. Epic!
@patrickallen29982 жыл бұрын
Some cymbal brands have certain cymbals in their line-up designed more for "auxillary percussion" players than set players that are made specifically for playing with the hands and still get a clear tone and sound great. I mean... The one Larnell smashes is not that. But those kinds of cymbals exist. So he's not the first person to do that. :D

Yeah there would really be no point in getting sput and the ghost note band to do it if it wasn’t previously done with Vic Firth since all the drummers/percussionists are all meinl artists yet Vic Firth artists as well. But who knows I don’t know they might’ve still done it if the price was right. Love the production of the Vic Firth live jams and now this series. Imo my favorite productions by cymbal companies are the meinl drum videos and meinl drum festivals and now these vic Firth/zildjian live videos.

Larnell seems to combine so many of the amazing qualities of other drummers into a cohesive style that is all his own. The fierce groove of the best old-school funk drummers, the dead-to-rights in to pocket playing of Gadd, the effortless intensity of Colaiuta, the playfulness of Carter Beauford. You could go on and on. Definitely one of the greatest players alive right now, IMO.
