Currently running CasaOS on Debian very happily, waiting for a stable release of zimaos. The GPU stats that you didnt show is pretty appealing (Maybe TPU and NPU too?). I am glad you posted this video as it shows clearly ZimaOS is still in testing stage, should wait for the official release until bugs are gone.

Here's the deal - I run TrueNAS on my ZimaCube but I like ZimaOS. I have CasaOS running on an n100 minipc and I am totally happy with it. It is my main Jellyfin server and it has been up and stable for ages now. Since then I've built out a Proxmox cluster for VMs, Kubernetes, etc. The ZimaCube is part of the Proxmox cluster and I pass the hard drives directly to the TrueNAS VM, but you know what, that n100 running CasaOS would have been more than enough for nearly all of my needs lol

You can use compose, but the option is a bit hidden. 18:50 - If it's the same as CasaOS, you can click the import button in the top right near the "X" after clicking Add custom App in the App Store.

It's definitely still very rough, but I tried it the other day in a VM and I liked how it's coming along. Give it a year or so and I think this is going to be a very respectable OS.

You might have found this out already but for accessing data on mounted SMB Shares (at least in CasaOS) it works via the /mnt directory and all smb shares are mounted there with the ip address as directory names e.g. /mnt/10.0.0.83/bla/blub

I used zimaos for some time. Unfortunately, although the system looks more or less complete, it is not. I constantly had smaller or larger problems with it, which I never experienced during the year of using Debian + CasaOS. The problem turned out to be smb + Tailscale shares, which broke the connection every time, which was necessary for me to use NAS outside the home. Another problem was the very poor performance of the built-in VM, which I also needed to use. What made me go back to Debian + CasaOS was the fact that after one of the updates, the way the system handled disks was completely broken, they disappeared from the view in the settings and files and fortunately they were still connected, otherwise I would have lost a lot of data. This was fixed in the next updates but it took some DMing with the developers on their discord. And it's quite a closed system, so you can't do many things on Linux

ZimaOs and CasaOs are different beasts. ZimaOs is an operating system based in Debian that you have to install and you can only use that. CasaOs you install on Top of Debian or Ubuntu and you can still use your desktop alongside CasaOs.

@SHO1989Ай бұрын
Exactly. Both appear to be looking to make a simpler homelab os. Zimaos had a head start but looks like it's still having growing pains. I have a lot of hope for Hexos. I like that it's Truenas under the hood but that they are simplifying the gui front end. I hope both projects succeed and make home labs easier for guys like me that just want to use it, not become a system admin.

Why youtuber promotes multiple linux distributions, which are nothing but some UI tweaks here and there. They should promote users to use main steam linux like Arch Debian Fedora instead.
@Phoenixwizard77Ай бұрын
That's a bit of an over simplification. Some distros have tweaks to the kernel itself which can be complicated for novice or non power users. Distros with those changes already made are easier to recommend. (I use Debian with an old unsupported Nvidia GPU, it's a pain in the ass) When I used Linux Mint when I was a noob, it did all that for me.

you want a total newbie to go headfirst into arch, debian, and fedora as their first OS? Why not tell them to use Gentoo then and nothing else if you're sure all those are just ui tweaks?
@techzone2009Ай бұрын
@netmaster26 I am not against the distributions managed by big companies. Most of the distribution out there is made by a team of 2 or 3 developers, in some cases, maintained by a single developer and after some time the distribution is no longer maintained and left as it is.
