I had a fantastic time last night in Milton Keynes where I was invited to be part of the Zimbabwe Heritage Library Exhibition Open Night that was organised by the Zimbabwe Heritage Festival. I was given 20 minutes to do a presentation on drumming & showcase the different rhythms & styles of drumming found in my home country. Did my thing, played & talked about the three different rhythms that I played (Amabhiza, Mbakumba & Dinhe) & just as I thought I was done, moving off the stage & thought I had got away with it some gentleman stood up & requested that I play the famous Zimbabwean sound that introduces the news every hour, it’s the Jerusalema/Mbende rhythm that was made popular by the late Douglas Vambe. It’s always a privilege to perform in front of my people, there’s always something that brings us together, regardless of tribal background & music is certainly one of those things….. We #Qhubeka!!!
