Inside a Failed State (2007): Zimbabwe, once one of the most prosperous nations in Africa, now has the lowest life expectancy and highest inflation rate in the world. Life has become an everyday struggle for survival.

The supermarkets in Bulawayo are all empty. According to the shopkeeper, the last time they had bread was "a month ago". Filming secretly undercover, journalist Ginny Stein captures the desperation everywhere. "There is no water. Nothing, just nothing", laments 'Tony'. "Children are hungry, everyone is hungry. Our government is a monster". Even if there were things in the shops, most people couldn't afford them. A teacher's monthly salary now buys the equivalent of one MacDonald's family meal. Malnutrition is taking its toll on people's health. "Up to 75% of the people coming in have diarrhea and vomiting", states Dr Thandazani. The fear is that these problems will only get worse. In July, the government forced businesses to half their prices. Now it's proposing to nationalize 51% of all white-owned businesses. "The economy must be in the hands of Zimbabweans", states Ambassador Khaya Moyo. But unsurprisingly, manufacturers and retailers feel they're being made new enemies of the state.

this is the best of journalism. this is what makes me attracted to it; exposing tyrants like Mugabe and the pain he places on his country. I am so sorry that Zimbabwe has to suffer through this disgusting famine whilst their leader throws a party for his birthday that costs a disgraceful amount of money for his birthday.

Without our pale tail's you and probably most of your race would cease to exist! Every other race in the world has benefited from our existence INCLUDING YOURS ESPECIALLY, in fact..without us this planet would be as advanced as it was maybe 2500 years ago. The proof is in the pudding bro, South Africa and Zimbabwe are prime examples of the stark difference when we run things VS your kind, then there are all the other countries that are shit holes under black rule. Truth hurts I am sure but its just too bad, all of you should just admit you need us, only a fraction of you can make it without us (something like 20 percent) and get on with your lives by no longer blaming us for your problems. Whites, these days, should be welcome and treated well since you do NEED US...get that in your head unless you want your people to keep suffering.

So us evil pale tails came back twice to help your asses out, and have said fuck it ever since, because really, why bother helping you people? All you do is destroy what's been handed to you. Might I remind you about Mugabe's failed campaign to drive whites out, and then turning around BEGGING for them to return? I have no problem with you having your own nation, hell have the whole continent - just leave us out of your problems and SOLVE THEM ON YOUR OWN. You have had numerous examples of colonization to follow, that have brought you the printing press, the automobile, the telephone, the television and the god damn NUKE. There's literally no excuse. @colinmaurel6904
@colinmaurel6904 10 жыл бұрын
Who was the standard of living high for? The blacks or the whites? The whites went to all the good schools, you would be lucky to find a decent blacks school especially in the Tribal Trust Lands, St Ignatius was was very good black school. The blacks were not initially allowed to vote, they were paid far less than most of us. During this time trade routes and contracts were signed up and made fast by the colonial masters. Sanctions also did not help the new government - a legacy from the government prior to Mugabe's reign, and further to that, all the whites that write on sites like this probably left taking with them huge amounts of forex, doesn't do any country any good does it. so when blacks took the reigns there were was a lot to sort out and guidelines( Lancaster House ) that were put in place, so that any deviation from these mean't suffering, guide lines that would benefit the external influences on this once great nation. Another one is if situations are so bad then why are some people doing really well there? I have friends that will not leave out of choice and if we were all true patriots we would not have either. Why don't those that are educated in the way of agriculture farm in Zimbabwe, I am sure there are great farm manger jobs out there and I am sure that the government would pay well.

Jay Lastname FUck you! The sole purpose of European colonialism is oppression, and assimilation. They didn't care about the welfare of the people, and often incited Civil war, to keep Africans fighting each other, when they should've been fighting the invaders and their lies. Imperialism and slavery didn't go away, they just changed. Neo-colonialism is keeping African nations from their true potential.

Zimbabwe is a nation that is going through labor pains. Once that child is born, it will be a new life and a new day. the people just have to be patient. Other African nations need to support Mugabe in his efforts. They need to continue to do trade with there fellow African nation, and not allow american and european sanctions to dictate. Cut the white mans neck from the source. Mugabe is practicing Garviism, Pan Africanism. What people dont realize the people in the cities rely on the supermarket too heavily. The rural people have chickens and gardens, so they are not as affected. Mugabe is doing the right thing. ReAfricanize your souls my fellow African brothers and sisters. Africa for Black Africans.

Boet, you make a good point but I am not sure I entirely agree. India with a colonial history has managed to maintain for the most part representative government. I think one problem in Africa was that in many colonies, not only British, exploitation was the sole purpose of being there. The position in Rhodesia was significantly different. Rhodesia had a better chance than most former colonies of thriving. This is the tragedy.

Sanctions fall under the category of leaving zimbabwe alone. How does mugabe not being able to shop in Europe or sell crap to the West matter. You made your bed, now go stave in it as your HIV meds fail.

BBC article "Zimbabwe land reform 'not a failure'" 17 November 2010 The 10 year study debunks five myths: * That land reform has been a total failure * That most of the land has gone to political "cronies" * That there is no investment on the resettled land * That agriculture is in complete ruins, creating chronic food insecurity * That the rural economy has collapsed The study found that about two-thirds of people who were given land were "ordinary -low income- Zimbabweans"

idrobinhood - 1) Zimbabwe's problems are due to extreme inflation (due to runaway printing of money), lack of job training and lack of foreign investment and diversified exports. Zimbabwe actually had a stable economy in the 80s to early 90s. 2) South Africa is doing just fine. The economy in SA is better off now than it was during Apartheid. SA has a growing middle class, increasing foreign investment and more production. Poverty was almost 80% during Apartheid.

When I saw the Ambassador getting interviewed I could see his nervousness. He knows the government isn't doing much of anything to help the Zimbabweans. It's so sad and it's even worse that's this isn't the only place in all of Africa and further more the world where the government is failing the country. Just pray people and in the wise words of Bob Marley: "Help the weak if you are strong".

nimzzs. Take a look at what Cape Verde Republic has done, and is doing, in the way of desalination projects through its State owned utility company, Electra. CVR is one of the few success stories in Africa. (Hardly a rich country however!)

Hi rewayi. Not too sure what you mean. I'm all for different cultures too. What I am talking about is firstly, equality of opportunity: that one earns one's place in life. It is not dictated by kinship, clan or tribe. Secondly, that the system of government allows one man, one vote; elections are free, fair and without intimidation; that there are separation of powers and that the rule of law is adhered to. Thirdly, that there is a mixed economy with an adequate welfare safety net.

hill. The UK retains more than a passing interest in her former colonies to which she granted independence. Her involvement was considerable in the case of Kenya a few years ago following the disputed election. And, of course, we know what happened in Nigeria and Uganda in the 60s & 70s. SA, since it cut its ties with Britain as long ago as 1948 and left the Commonwealth, is treated more as a foreign country. The abomination of apartheid was of couse a matter of international concern.

It's because in zimbabwe the attacks on farmers were directed by the government, while in south africa it's down more to gangs of thugs. I don't disagree with you though, the western media largely ignores this issue which is pretty bad. I think the football world cup will begin to highlight to the world a lot of south africas issues.

Rhodesian farmers once produced enough food to be able to export food. there were alot of backs that became unemployed as result of destroying the working farms and killing or forcing to flee thouse with the knoweledge to grow food

Mugabe might be unpopular in the West but to Africans he's a great leader. He kicked out those who had stole land from Africans. Sure the country will suffer for a few years but Africans in the future will appreciate his efforts. Of course violence against white farmers is wrong. But forceful eviction and allocation of their land to Africans is the right thing to do. In Africa like in the West, land is of utmost importance. I hope Kenya and South Africa follow suit.

List the evidence. Dates, locations and names. Also, give the pre-2000 food production levels. The year on year decline and show what hectarage of land was taken out of production in each year as a direct result of the activities which you mention.
