My gf already knows what these video uploads are by the sound of the charcoal hitting the paper. She asked "Are you watching 'the guy who makes random lines that magically become a face' again?". 😊 😂

Fucking fantastic! Learnt so much from this. I use a very hard hard with the paper-stump. You use it with a delicate hand at times, which is a great technique to adopt. Also, love the rough look of the sketches. This gives the portraits an aged photograph look. Never got the obsession with hyper-realism. Not my thing. This on the other hand is great! Thank you again!

Let me try to break down your process: 1.[until 3:30] Basic construction. No features, just building a frame to work on. You also put down lines where certain edges of high contrast are, like around the nostril and the left side of the the forehead. 2.[until 6:00] laying down core-shadows and big areas of shade, a lot darker than I would dare to do, absolutly fearless. You're not seperating between features still, it seems its only value you focus on here. For example, you put down the shadows of the right side of the face with the same strokes you use to 'color in' the hair. You also start to use some shadows to refine shapes, like the profile of the face. Everything remains very 2D at this stage. 3. [until ~11:20] A remix of putting down smaller areas of dark values, both very dark (eye) and more mid tone(around the nose), and softening shadows. The face starts to become more 3D and you hint at more detail. You start to focus on getting the values right, sometimes using your blendig stump to draw lighter values. 4. [until 12:35]Refining Dark areas, this time seperating the face and neck from the hair by giving them the darker value. 5. [until 21:50]Starting to work on detail by using your clean(ish) blending stump almost like an eraser to reveal lighter tones in small areas, and lines of coal for tiny dark shadows. Fine tuning shapes, and creating the shapes of the mouth. Softening of the skin. 6. [until 26:26]Creating highlights using your kneaded eraser, and blending them in. Using the coal pencil, you give texture and direction to the hair. You also use the pencil to blend in the dark shadows of the face, using soft hatching with its side. 7. [until end] Finishing touches. You return to detail and softening (basically 5.). You use your kneaded eraser a little more. Some Quetions: Well, did I get it about right? ':D Any special reasons why you waited so long to work on the mouth? Most importantly, any tips to better identify important shadows, especially in this incremental from-bigger-to-smaller-areas-kinda way you seem to do it? Great work, I love your channel :)

Thanks for serious watching! Yes, the break downs are what I basically use for charcoal and oil in impressionism approach. Q: 'Any special reasons why you waited so long to work on the mouth'? A: I like to use eyes more to deliver emotion and seldom refine mouth in my personal works. So, I tend to postpone for drawing mouth and ear. Q: 'any tips to better identify important shadows'? A: I try to be confident at what I capture even if the shape's not accurate.

I think I kinda understand whats going on now after watching a couple of these. It seems like you follow mostly the shadows , instead of drawing lines you make the shape out of charcoal and it resembles the overall shape and shadows of what you’re drawing and then you slowly take away the shadows until you have what you need , essentially adding light until it’s there. Basically blocking in the shapes and features with charcoal and wiping it away. Working dark to light. Am I understanding this correctly?

Zin Lim oh my gosh I can’t believe I got that right! I gotta try your way of drawing sometime. I think it’ll be educational. I love the way you seem to almost wash away the paper to unveil the portrait like if it was already their, it’s beautiful. Thank you for taking time out of your day to respond! :)
