I’m adding linings to purses made from cut off jeans. I’m wanting to drop a zipper into top of lining then just attach lining at top edge as usual. Or drop entire thing below the jeans waistband. I keep trying to think is there a easy way to cut a two piece lining extra long on top and somehow add a zipper, like making a small coin purse but roll the top down to drop the zipper.....I can’t think past the geometry of this and still be able to sew the lining into the bag. It seems possible as I added a drop down draw string edge to a tote, so it can go high low, flat, or cinched up. I think I may have to just make a mini prototype.

izzy...if you are not using a pattern ... and making a bag.... how long do you make the zip panel..... does it depend on the size of your boxed corners??? so... if you want your finished bag to be 14"wide... and your boxed corner to be 4" ... how big do you cut your main bag (outside) ... would that be 22" wide ... and would your zip then be 14"

Hi ruth... as a rule, both zip panels when zipped up should measure the depth (side width) of your bag..hope I am making sense?

Question... In one of your videos you mention that the zippers panels length should be 4 inches shorter than the tote/bag... What about the width? How does one determine how wide the stripes should be? Thanks!

For me I determine the width based on how wide the bottom of my bag is going to be. If I had a bag that was say 8" deep at the bottom, I'd probably do 5" at the top.

You can melt the zippers edges with a lighter if you wanna cut the ends:)the are usually plastic

Izzy, wouldn't it be just as easy to install an open ended zipper to the exact length you need? That way you don't have all that excess zipper hanging. I don't care for the extra zipper it the end - just my personal opinion but to me it doesn't look professional. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. I learn a lot from your videos.

yes its personal choice... I had bought zips and fabrics and the lot and accuired them over time..then when i had some time all tutorials came in a matter of 4 months, this happens when you design bags... you make protos and then you get it right the 2nd time. But doing videos its not easy so I found it best to use the ones I have... and as the zipper panels varied some times its difficult to find zipper to match exactly..... thank you for the comment, I wanted to explain, because when I start a project and start to do video as well, i have no idea how the bag will turn out... I have an image in my head..but some times it turns out a little different... or completely different :-)
