If it's pumpkin pie, I'll eat it. Is Zippy's pumpkin pie the best? My wife says my sense of smell is dead, which the taste and smell senses are supposed to be tied together, so I can't say, but I'll never say no to Zippy's pumpkin pie. Is it home made from scratch or via canned pumpkin? Well, I recently found out that FDA is loose on canned pumpkin, which if a mixture of field pumpkin of either acorn/kabocha/Hubbard squash, it can be called canned pumpkin. We'll have to wait for the Chris taste tasting on homemade pumpkin pie Zippy's and other pie contenders, as to which one is the real deal or tastes the best. It should make next year's Thanksgiving video an interesting video submittal. Have a great Thanksgiving.

Food & aromas have a common trait in that they bring out a strong attachment to memories & feelings of by gone days or family, mine was smoked turkey on Thanksgiving my father always made cuz he knew l loved it, how I miss him on Thanksgiving 😢❤

Smoked turkey sounds good. Mahalo for sharing. I also grew up with certain dishes that family members used to make, but we no longer eat because they are gone. Thankful to still be able to enjoy my Dad's hash patties.

Different people have different preferences. There are some that say the best part of pumpkin pie is the contrasting tastes of the cinnamon and the sugar in every bite.

Ah, you’d hate my pumpkin pie- lots of spices and I actually cut down on the sugar! I want to taste all that spice. And of course, it’s my mother’s pie recipe. My other favorite is apple pie the way she made it … with less sugar so it’s real appley. Same with blueberry pie in summer. But the main holiday food I love is the stuffing/dressing; the whole house, full of that delicious aroma. That’s the real thing. For me. Have a wonderful, pie-filled Thanksgiving. This week, you made me smile. Thanks for that.
@HelloFromHawaii Жыл бұрын
Mahalo for sharing. I'm not a spicy pie guy, but it's great that you keep up those traditions and continue the recipes. There's that distinct holiday house smell that I love too. For us, it's a mix of turkey, crab, rice, sushi, and fried noodles.

Chris! Upon your heartfelt homage to the Zippy’s pumpkin pie, I had to go and get a pie to share with my family. I grew up in Australia and could only imagine what this iconic pumpkin pie would taste like. When I finally got a chance to try pumpkin pie in Hawaii it was the Costco version. Very disappointed. Then I tried another pumpkin pie at a thanksgiving dinner party - also disappointed. I tried a few other pies from different places but just didn’t get what the big deal was. Zippy‘s pie though! It’s definitely better than any other pumpkin pie I’ve tasted to date. I can now go to sleep knowing that not all pumpkin pie pies are made equal. It’s definitely a science to have a balanced spice and sweetness ratio with creamy mouth feel and not a wet spongy fluff feel. Wykyk. Thanks for you community service! Keep up the great work!
@HelloFromHawaii Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you were able to try. I'm sure they will be flying off the shelf this week so good thing you tried before the Thanksgiving rush. And yeah, the Costco one is not great. The pie is huge, but often too spicy and flat. 🤙

The Nestle Crunch cake from Kaneohe Bakery. Hands down the best dessert ever. A chocolate cake with Nestle crunch bits in it, and whipped cream in between layers, topped off with whipped cream and Nestle crunch bits in it. Haven't had it in 25 years and can still taste it.
@rayage777 Жыл бұрын
Actually it wasn't Kaneohe Bakery, it was the smaller one that was next to Kaneohe Bakery that had those screen doors and looked like a hole in the wall but had the best stuff.

Thanks for the share and Happy Thanksgiving! Our family was always Dee Lite Bakery for custard and Punpkin pie. Since then, they have closed and we actually asked the owner for the recipe......of course they sadly said no, but we found out an amazing recipe that had the best proportions that reminds me of my childhood. Mochi for new years will always be Nisshodo and Nastunoya tea house for catering. Patti's Chinese kitchen when they were open for Chinese New Year (they were our neighbor's up Alewa Heights). Hawaiian food is what my family cooks. There is really no kitchen/restaurant that does it like my mom's side of the family. That hit of childhood favorites is like the flash back from ratatouille. I hesitate to share sometimes because I don't like seeing my childhood favorite place blow up all over social media. When that happens, food quality changes to meet the demand. I'm mixed about sharing my childhood favorites here on O'ahu. 😮❤

My favorite pie is whatever is in front of me at that time! I never met a pie, cake, pastry, pudding I didn't like. In terms of pumpkin pie, Costco is one of the ones we buy. It tastes good and is only 5 bucks! Since I moved to Japan almost 5 years ago, I do miss pumpkin pie as you really don't see it here much. Actually I do have a pie I really don't like, pecan pie. Hope everyone had a great holiday!

I really like the Napoleon's Bakery pumpkin pie also. That along with their custard pie. My family ritual are getting a small chantilly cake for my wife, and a small dobash cake for me on our respective birthdays. Gotta honor the annual tasty traditions. Sadly, my other 'go-to' bakery closed down several years back, that being Saint-Germain/Dee Lite Bakery. In any case, so not to run into the Thanksgiving pie rush, I already got my pumpkin pie as of today. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I worked for a local company and for Thanksgiving, they offered people options. One of options was a turkey at Foodland and the second was two pies at Zippy's. It was always a difficult choice of what to pick.

You're absolutely right about people having an emotional connection with food, locals especially with Zippy's. Back in the day when I was really young, I'd always get a Root Beer float and a slice of Peach Bavarian cake from Zippy's. The first time I left Hawaii was for the military. After a year of mainland food, the first thing I did coming back home from the airport was to stop off at Zippy's to pick up a Zip Pac. That emotional connection people have with fool is a real thing.
@HelloFromHawaii Жыл бұрын
Mahalo for sharing. The emotional connection to food is special. It's why I will always love the pumpkin pie, even if it doesn't make any Top 10 Lists. Besides the Zip Pac, I used to get gravy and rice bowl from Zippy's when I was younger.

Thanks for this. So, when you say sweet, how much sweeter? I wonder if this is the Filipino influence? I will ask my wife to help me make my pie sweeter and give it a try. Generally more sweet isn’t my thing but open.
@HelloFromHawaii Жыл бұрын
It's a lot sweeter than the typical Costco pie. I've found that the Costco one is very spicy and the crust is just okay. Of course, the Costco one is bigger and probably more value for the money. However, in this case, I prefer the smaller Zippy's pie and just eat bigger slices :)

Only had pumpkin pie a number of times. The ones I have tried were okay. To me, pumpkin pie isn’t creamy if that makes sense. However, I do want to try Zippy’s pumpkin pie now. I love pumpkin pie, but you can get them all year so they aren’t as special. You can buy them in markets instead of restaurants. The time to line up to buy pies at Marie Calendar’s at the mainland is over. I get them at Aldi, Costco, Walmart, or Sprouts.

Unfortunately, Zippy's doesn't serve the pie year round. They used to, but now it's only in November and certain weekends throughout the year. In a way, it makes it more special. Whenever I see it at the bakery, I get excited.
