Zishan T1 Super Review - SERIOUS Specs

The search for a great budget DAP continues. I want something small, with great audio playback, decent power, and a UI that's not a pain to deal with. Let's see if the new Zishan T1 is the cheap digital audio player for me.

Realistically, all DAPs, DACs, phones and what not use ICs from a small range of manufacturers. They're all quite linear and have low distortion, output impedance and noise, so expecting vastly different audio signature is not reasonable if the chips are implemented properly, which is neither difficult or expensive. Most differences described in reviews are likely down to expectation bias, justification bias or "audiophile syndrome". Most people would expect an expensive Fiio or Sony device to sound better than a Zishan, but given we're in the 21st century, you're paying for the brand and the build quality - not for the audio chips.

@@outofvideos than a 2k dollar dap? It depends on your needs. I use a fiio m5 or ap80 for the gym. 100% better in that context than a 2k dollar dap. I would spend the money on a 2k dollar set of headphones instead. A good amp. Maybe thx portable.

from googling the 4493 is better than the 4490 and the 4497 is the best and the top end model. they are incremental improvements to the akm dac sound. all are said to be warm and smooth sounding. it's just that the 4493 is better and has more detail and the 4497 is better still. and as with most dacs implementation is key and will influence the way it sounds. the opposite version of this dac is the ess sabre dacs. the 9018 is the 4490's counterpart. the 4497 is 9038's counterpart. sabre dacs are known to be very detailed, cold, analytical and bright. the khadas tone board is said to be one of the best budget implementation of the ess es9038q2m (top end) dac. those sell for around a hundred bucks but that's just a bare board and a usb cable. you can buy a case / box for it so you can make it look more presentable. check out the khadas tone board. if you're interested in more of the zishan stuff, check out the highest end model of the dac. those are the best as far as akm dacs are concerned

Hey, on a side note, the zip-up case that it came with is the perfect size for the Koss KSC75, I have a couple of them (or at least they look very similar). The KSCs fit nice and snug with the earhooks overlapping, it offers “some” crush protection in your bag, and it stops the spindly cable getting snagged on something. Highly recommended ☑️

Tried to answer some of your statements based on this video. Here we go; 1. AK4490, AK4493, AK4497, AK4499 are some of the high-end DACs from Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM), a Japan based micro-technology manufacturing company. 2. Different module has their own sound signature, which you may or may not like it (since the higher quality DAC requires more money, and for DAC module itself, some people might want to just walk away from it and stay with stock module). 3. The amp noise issue. Now this is quite serious as the output impedance of the T1 is measured at 10 ohm, which is isn't an ideal number for IEMs, since IEMs are very sensitive to power, especially low-impedance IEMs. So 10 ohm will cause audible noise to sensitive cans. 4. Yes. I've been using Z1, Z2 (a bit) and T1. With the lack of hardware play/pause button and volume knob, I need some time to adjust myself with the T1. 5. In mine, charging the T1 doesn't cause it to warmed up. Seriously. My T1 is pretty cool when being charged. But it will be a frying pan if I play 11.2MHz DSD for 20 minutes only, which caused uncomfortable feeling to it. But aside these cons, I still like the T1 tho. Already gave it a 4.5/5

Great specs, massive power, high-end MUSES02, etc. However, what bothers me is the battery life. 2 hours of battery life when turbo DAC is turned on and playing 24/96 audio. And less than that if you're playing DSD... Not really great, especially for the $255 price tag (04/06/2020). Maybe I'll wait for the price to get lower and take the shot. For me, just spend some $50 more and you can get hiby r5. Much better features and connectivity. Battery life is also far more better. But, for DIY, ZiShan is always the best bang-for-buck. It's up to your preference now

Zishans are DIY players. You need to replace OA (operational amplifiers) and a low frequencies filter and solder all the pate! Only then you'll get a nice sound, wich is kinda better than lots over 200$ players

Absolutely love your work. You are one reviewer who I think is very close to my expections. One question though. Which is the best dap within $150? Have you tried a shanling m0 or a Hidizs Ap80? Another question I have is, do all these DAPs really sound better than your smartphone. I have a m3k, and I honest to god cannot find a difference in FLAC files, playing between this and an iPhone 5s.

A $150 and under, you miiiight be able to find a discounted Sony A45, which would be my choice. Next, of what I've used I'd pick xDuoo X3ii, especially if you're more into headphones than IEMs. I've used the Shanling M0 a bit, had a bad experience (mine was quite buggy) but also didn't like the compromise to user interface with such a small device. I haven't used the Hidizs but that seems like a real good option for the price. As for sound quality vs. a smartphone, I'd say (a) most likely there's not a significant difference to be heard, but (b) if you have the right music files and right earphones / headphones and listen really carefully you can probably pick out some differences. The most obvious differences I can pick out are (1) amp hiss on sensitive earphones, and (2) max volume on hard-to-drive headphones. Apart from that, it's often hard to pick out differences unless one of the things you're comparing has an obviously low-quality DAC + amp (I'd guess the iPhone 5s is pretty decent).

I bought an M0 at the beginning of summer and it seemed to be defective -- it would read my memory card, but only sometimes. I returned it. If it worked, I probably would've given it 3 stars -- the UI is pretty compromised. Understandably because it's small, but I'd rather something with better UI and more buttons.

Honestly an iPod Touch is a good option, though it's not just a player. Maybe the Fiio M6, which is "just a player" but has some wifi apps. I don't think the Fiio M6 supports Pandora, but it does support a bunch of other streaming music apps. Here's a full list: www.fiio.com/newsinfo/139014.html

I may agree with you that some players sounds the same. But I notice that with some iem they sound so different. I tried the fiio ,hiby, sony, nearly the same. Small difference in bass and bright tone. But then the ipod made the Sony iem sound crap. One question. Does this eq changes the volume when it's used?

I'm not sure what caused it, but it goes away and then randomly comes back. I think it's a software crash -- let the battery die and recharge it and I think it'll come back.

Super* Review I really like it. For traveling and the gym it’s perfect m, more so than the shanling MO as it is a Bluetooth receiver and transmitter. They’ve fixed a couple issues I had in the recent firmware and are taking head of suggestions. I had my eyes on the M6 but thought I’d try the M5 first and now don’t see a reason to get the M6. I might get the M11 for home use. But I’m really digging the M5.

I'm wondering how these compare to the dongle DACs since I can use them anywhere with Type C to A adapters. Would dongle DACs be a better option? VE Odyssey and Sonata HDs. I see the Zishan as somewhat a hybrid solution like dongle DACs. I can use them as DAPs as well as DAC/AMP for my phone or laptop to improve on audio right?

There's a lot different between a DAP and a dongle, so I'll limit my answer just to audio quality. Dongles like the Hidizs and Apple dongle sound great to my ear, I couldn't point to a difference between them and a DAP reliably... except that a DAP like this Zishan is likely more powerful and better equipped to power high impedance headphones. For IEMs, a dongle is a good choice for audio quality.

The V1-A is very interesting on the paper (AK4490 DAC, bi-rectional Bluetooth with aptx support, dual microsd slots...), but it's not half as good in reality. Bluetooth almost doens't work (constant stutter and many bugs), the Sound is quite disappointing for such a great DAC Chip (so they messed up somewhere else like the output stage) and the UI is quite bad as well. I would not recommend it. Get a Zishan Z3, T1oder Xduoo X3 II with the same Chip, but much better musical performance.

I kind of do -- I have a little switcher that lets me switch between sources with the press of a button, and if I think I hear a difference I'll mash the button with my eyes closed so it's random. And usually I determine I can't tell a difference :P

Depends on which phone you're comparing to. Most likely, this will have a lot more power than your phone, which mostly means you can use it for headphones that are too quiet on your phone. I don't believe it supports amp-only operation -- you'll have to play music that's on the Zishan.

With low end DAP you either have to choose between audio fidelity or usability, I tried the walnut DAP, it doesn't even have a screen which limit the usability but it sounds good, end up buying a Ruizu DAP with better screen, longer battery life, and much more usable UI although it use Ruizu own DAC chip

DSD pro is much better value honestly, it has quirks too but it's solid. It has 22 ohms output Z tho, so if you use multi bas sensitive iems look for the regular DSD that has around 1 ohm output Z. Z2 and Z3 are horrible at 100 ohms, unusable with anything but > 300 ohms earbuds. T1 is specced at 10 ohms, not too bad but the interface sucks, not to mention some ppl already got broken / frozen screen.

Zishan is total crap.... Stop wasting your money.... Buy a M0 or M5 instead

I usually don't like Fiio's because of their poor sound quality, but the tiny M5 was a real (great) surprise. It's one of the best Players of 2019 and has a lot of power, especially for such a tiny player. But the Zishan is defenately not crap. They a really good in their price range.
