@JanTennis I think it was not on purpose either. Is Davis Cup and team format. There's lots of energy. Usually exchanges are calm in a regular ATP match. Berg was euphoric. On a regular match players cede the way to whoever reaches the net first during the exchange. Perhaps Garin should have waited for Berg to pass him by. Just my opinion.

@JanTennisPurpose or not it doesn't matter, so Shapovalov didn't hit that chair umpire in the eye on purpose so he shouldn't have been disqualified ? Nalbandian hit the leg of a guy unintentionnaly because he aimed at a structure that wasn't solid but it did broke and got defaulted for it, still he never wanted to hit the man right ? Djokovic sent a ball away unintentionnally to a line judge yet got defaulted right ? Also. The best case i have for you is that one : A double player played a ball that was fault and unfortunately hit the back of the head of the opponent and got defaulted for it because they considered the ball was not in play and the opponent fell, was it on purpose ? No, it was not, same here, Bergs run to Garin and made a pretty hard contact, he should have been disqualified, simple. The guy got his head hit by the ball probably would have been able to play 10 min later but nothing like that happened, just like Bergs should have lost here for doing that.

Tennis is a gentleman's sport. A white sport. It is not a contact sport. Here there is a clear aggression suffered in a foreign country, with a local public. Not only are the players the most important thing in the sport, the only and vital thing for this sport to continue functioning, without players, the teams, managers, fans, investors or anything else do not matter. It is that clear, like water. The Chilean team was already suffering the pressure of playing away from home, the stress of the time change, change of climate, language, customs. Historically, the ITF attacks without mercy and makes the rules be followed down to the smallest detail and unjustifiably and daily paranoidly suspects all South Americans, whether they are players, coaches, technical staff, directors (well, the latter with reason). But in addition to playing the last and decisive point, being very close, under pressure, under stress and suffering a physical assault, the player had already lost all motivation and saw himself as someone who had to worry about his health, not even giving him the opportunity to go to the locker room to be checked properly, but rather leaving him exposed to the lions just as the Romans did in their Coliseum with the slaves, but Garin is not a slave of the ITF, he is a human being who dedicated his life to sport and deserves respect, no matter his nationality. Such a shame that this match had to end this way. Bergs' outburst is so unexpected and out of proportion, but I can imagine a world where a professional tennis player playing for his country loses touch with reality and rushes to the bench the way he did. Afterwards, Garin was hit. It's not for me to say whether he was able to play afterwards, but a medical professional examined him and deemed him fit to continue. I have the impression that, after that, it's no longer sport but procedure: hoping to win on the green carpet rather than on the pitch. And yet, if Garin was indeed able to play again, I think he would have had the psychological upper hand over Bergs, who would have gone into the next game feeling bad about what had happened. Again, such a shame. The meeting between Belgium and Chile, two emerging tennis nations, deserved a better outcome.

@@ChagoME We're not gonna agree on this. It's a matter of interpretation. Nothing is clear but to believe that Bergs deliberately aggressed Garin is for me far-fetched. It doesn't make any sense given the context and it also doesn't correspond to everybody's reaction after the incident. You can se that Bergs is in shock and disbelief after he hit Garin unless you assume he's an excellent actor worthy of an Oscar. He also apologized to the ref and Belgian's team captain immediately went to Garin to check on him. Maybe Garin wasn't fit to play anymore although I wonder why Chili didn't ask for a medical time-out. Given the circumstances, I'm sure nobody in the Belgian team would have complained if the time-out lasted for even 10 or 15 minutes. But I'm not a doctor and I wasn't there. My only point is that it's a shame it ended that way. All games were tight and there was a lot of fair-play between both countries. Having said all of that, I fully understand the point of view according to which Bergs should have been defaulted but I don't know IFT's rules. I trust that the empire know them and that he applied them. Nevertheless, I'm alarmed by the hate messages that Bergs has received since the incident. Whether one believes he should have been defaulted or not, we should leave it at that. Chili will probably file a complaint to the IFT and a commission will decide on this.

Garin didn't want to brush it off and carry on playing as if nothing happened and as if he wasn't wronged. Also, I believe Bergs would have had the upper hand in the match, as Garin was understandably shaken. And, head trauma is no joke! A swift medical examination may say he's OK at the moment, but who could guarantee he'd have been fine after exerting himself physically if he had continued ?? Mind boggling insanity !!
@justynaw46094 күн бұрын
. I don't consider Bergs acting deliberately a "far-fetched" scenario. In the heat of the moment, stewing in anger and/or arrogance, he didn't stop himself from acting recklessly and aggressively. Then, he simply got scared of the serious consequences of his own stupidity. Such behaviour can be observed amongst children who don't yet know how to manage emotions well. He might have wanted to hurt, but not that badly, not to cause that "inconvenient drama". Only he knows what he meant to do. For me, it's a 50/50 situation, but we will never find out from him what he really meant. He should have been defaulted either way: whether for stupid recklessness or deliberate aggression. From the sportsmanship point of view, there's nothing to ponder over-an unacceptable, dangerous and disrespectful act.

These highlights do not depict the actual events, and are clearly in favour of Chile. It was a genuine ACCIDENT, both players had been excited and cheering each point won throughout the match, it was a cliffhanger third set thriller and he accidentally bumped into him. A major overreaction by Chile refusing to play, resulting in code violation forfeit, great job by the referee and sad ending for Chile.

Bergs should already have had numerous warnings for his ridiculous grunting, or more accurately, shouting, after he has hit the ball. It is so clearly manufactured, totally unnecessary, and gamesmanship in order to put off the opponent. He needs to stop this awful habit, and quickly. Someone please tell him.

@petewright3952 of course, people will always have opinions. Some of them, though, are not very smart. Look at all the comments under the video and see for yourself how "original" and fresh (in your own singular view) your comment is.
