In this video, Patrick has a 9520R with a nasty knock in the engine and I hit the road to go finish up the 8320R fan drives. Got the parts in to install new dry style fan drives on an older Teir 3 8R 9.0L engine. Customer is still complaining on the tractor getting hot so we try a set of thermostats. Then I go back to the shop to see what Patrick has found…

You’d think, for how much these tractors cost, that they’d be trouble free for a decade with a good service history.

Couple things I’ve learned over the years on these. First is you don’t need to remove the hose to pull the fan drive. Second if you remove the boot that holds the cooler lines to the water pump housing, the hole allows the bearing cavity to breathe and can aid in removal and installation of the driven assembly.

Great video Zeth and the place is a hive of activity with everyone being busy as bees! As is the case in all modern vehicles/equipment, regardless of cars, commercials or agricultural equipment, there is never enough space to get to parts that need changing like on your 8320R, but you got her done.

You got that right, I’ve been an automotive tech for a bit over 15 years and the cars are just getting more and more jam packed as the years go by. You’d swear they build some of these cars as if they’ll never have to be repaired, just stick the entire engine bay and transmission on a table and then build the car around it lol

First Gen r series, absolutely my favorite 8000 series ever. I feel like they all run a bit hot, though, but not really too hot. We had an 8270r with 13k plus hours. In the summer, it would get to 225 degrees Fahrenheit. But overall, it had less problems than our newer 8285r with 5k hours.

Popping out air cleaner = exhaust valve not opening, valve train failure. Just so you know old guys like your stuff. The old Cummins engines had a compression release for cold weather starting. The exhaust push tube had a collar at the center, which a shaft had cut outs to match the collars. Driver pulls a cable which operates a bell crank, which rotates shaft, which holds exhaust valve open, which allows engine to spin fast. The exhaust push tubes would break where the collar was. Hence popping thru air cleaner. Don't mean a thing today but let you know old timers enjoy your content.

13.5 with a broken valve bridge. I had to deal with one of those this spring in a 9560 RT. Broke the bridge and bent the valves. Pulled the head and there were 11 cracks between the valve seats so customer got a new head put on. Have you guys heard anything about timing gear idler PIP's on the 13.6L engines? We got our first one in the shop this week. How come we never see any sprayers on the channel? Is there just not that many out there in your area?

I love your channel. Great content and fascinating! But I have to say that I don’t understand the percentage of failures on some of these Deeres. I have had two and had a lot of issues. We have since changed everything to Kubota over the years and we have absolutely zero issues with any of the equipment; excavators, tractors, etc. Just basic service… fluid changes, filters, etc. religiously follow the factory maintenance schedules. But nonetheless, love your skills, professionalism, and ingenuity! Keep the great vids coming!

I’ll never understand why Deere doesn’t just give up on the stupid variable fan. Either run a hydraulic fan or have direct drive or viscous. Any money you might save on efficiency is lost on repairs. This is the case on ALL JD models with variable speed fan. Especially s670 combines with the 9.0 where the idler gear is famous for coming off and grinding into the front cover. Brutal designs.

Zeth certainly seems to spend a fair bit of time on fan drives...and replacing them with updated drives. It's good that Deere is continually improving their designs and offering upgrades to older machines...but it often seems they're using the customer to test their designs and them charging them to fix the problem if they fail. Good business model 🙂.

Tell you what Zak - when I see a guy your build bending a long SnapOn bar - you don't have to stress the force! Again - good to see how John Deere have designed to make your life easier. How many hours on the 9529R? Has it had a hard life? Difficult to tell from my distance, when I see the paint job in almost showroom condition - I expect the engine to carry on at least till a bit of rust shows.

12000 hrs on my 855 cummins and no water pump replacement yet. If it does fail it doesn't grenade an engine internally. The fan has fixed pulleys that travel one speed with a grease zerk for bearings. 12000 hrs and never been touched other than 3 sets of belts lol. This stuff Deere considers maintenance that's normal is BS. In a real world water pumps dont get replaced before they fail for fear of wrecking an engine.

JD Quality has dramatically dropped over the last several years. One of my friends just had a rod go thru the block on a new deere with less then 50 hrs on it. Deere is fully warrantying every thing and free of charge tractor to use until his is repaired, but he said that may be the last green tractor he ever buys. I have a 1999 9300 thats been great since new but if i were to buy a new one it would most likely be red. Deere's prices have gone way up and quality has dropped way off.
