Once you get into the $1500. range, the Chinese violins sound very good. All these "comparison" videos use ultra cheap $50.00 violins compared to $10,000. European hand -made violins. Nicely played Bach and the music seemed to flow beautifully. The notes were more defined and articulation better on the antique violin. From what I can hear, projection seemed better as well. I am a Julliard music major, Theory and Composition and Classical Guitar. I have several guitars, both acoustic and electric that cost thousands of dollars. Like wise I have a couple cheap ones $150 range. But 2 of the biggest things I look for in a guitar is neck construction and the type of wood that is used. I favor mahogany in electric and Koa or maple in acoustics, In electric guitars, I have certain pickups that I use so I do have control over that as I will more than likely change the pickups. I have always told people, especially my students that it is not the guitar but the person playing it. I have my students focus on precision and discipline. I am just starting to learn to play the violin. In your video, I am really having a hard time telling which is the expensive and the inexpensive one which is a great testament to your talent.

I do not play violin. But I think most people choose Violin B because the performance in Violin A was a little bit out of tune compared to B. There is also a possibility that you played the Violin A with lesser bow control consistency than B, hence some people say that the Violin A is more scratchier, which I don't think has nothing to do with the quality of the wood. It's also possible that it has something to do with the rosin, or inferior strings but not the violin itself. But I am amazed with the sound quality of the Violin A. I will probably choose it over B if played equally well. I will say it's a tie for now. You proved that the skill of the player is more important than the quality of the material, as long as the instrument has a proper setup and is comfortable to use. I am amazed the way you made the cheap violin sound like a pro. Give me those skills! x)

The thing is, and you'll notice this as soon as you start playing, that on the Glarry it was WAY more difficult to play in tune... almost impossible. Violin A was the cheap one. But you can see that in the un-blinded comparison, you play the expensive violin differently than you do the cheap violin. The bow strokes are slightly longer, the vibrato is more pronounced, and you are slightly more animated. Presumably you did this in the blinded comparison as well. So, while the expensive violin sounds a little better, some of that may be due to the better play it got from you. It’s quite amazing, really, how the difference in sound between these two instruments is far more subtle than the difference in price. It takes an incredibly cheap violin to produce a sound that is noticeably inferior to that of an expensive violin. It seems to me that once you get above $3000 to $4000, the sound quality between violins of all prices is pretty much the same.
@violinlounge3 жыл бұрын
The violins both respond very differently, on the cheap one vibrato doesn’t come out that easily and the bowing doesn’t speak, so I couldn’t do the things exactly the same or the difference would be bigger. But yes: the difference is not 200 times better and in higher end violins the differences in quality are more subtle although they can be very different in character.
@mas3ymd3 жыл бұрын
VIOLIN LOUNGE by Violinist Zlata Your statements that the vibrato “doesn’t come out” as easily and the bowing “doesn’t speak” are unclear. They can mean anything you want them to mean. Comparisons need to be a bit more concrete. Cheaper strings may not be as easily vibrated by the bow, much the same way synthetic bow hairs may not vibrate the strings as easily as horse hairs. Vibrato may be more difficult if the strings of the cheap violin are too high off the fingerboard, requiring more effort to rock your fingertip back and forth. I’m just offering some examples. These would be the kinds of clear, concrete, comparisons that everyone can see and demonstrate for themselves.

Both sound great as you play them 😺👍. Though I didn't like the scratchy sound at violin A. It was "scratchier" somehow at some parts. The notes (several notes in the beginning) were not similar with the violin B, I think it is better call it the color of the tone. At the first several notes they were a little bit "stingy", while violin B is more "warmer" and "calm" with "some degree of roundness sound". But the rest were just fine. Your playing techniques just blurred my perception then 😹😹👍👍🎻🎻. I think also Violin B has rich tone colours, it's like it has layer of many sounds, especially when you drop the note to the lower string after playing the higher tones at A/E string. I didn't get the same impression at Violin A. Matching the character from the first presentation, I think Violin A seems to be the cheap one. I think we need to "customize" the cheap violin to reduce the "stingy" and "scratchy" sound. 😺👍

Notwithstanding the fact that you probably made A sound as good as it possibly could by your expert playing technique, it sounds flat. B has much nicer tone clarity and some lovely overtones. But A is not sounding bad at all, considering the price point. I would imagine though that it must be tiring to get A to sound that nice, and if you were to play a very fast and technical piece on it, it would probably end up sounding muddled because its sound-projection appears slow and stagnant.
@violinlounge5 жыл бұрын
4theRun yes, exactly that, it takes a lot of effort and work arounds to make it sound good, that’s why less complexity and speed is possible, but still I was positively surprised. Some even got the test wrong.

A is cheap violin because it's sound quite hard and strong. B is expensive violin. the reason is that its sound is warmer.

@@violinlounge ah super for the game !! 😊 oh that's a very nice question and I'm very afraid to disappoint you, because I'm a poor little "violinist" adult beginner self-taught, sorry 😥! I have too much esteem for this art that I do not consider my 150€ violin as a violin, just as I do not consider myself a violinist ! But technically speaking, my violin is a beginner pack, brand Gewa, model pure monnich ! I find his sound really brilliant, cold, clear and sharp. But I'm thinking of taking another as a Christmas present, a Stentor model Verona (in the 450 €). I do not know if it's a good idea (but I registered in a concervatory for next September and I have no luthier before 3h of road ) !

DS gewa isn’t bad at all. I don’t know if the Stentor would be a big upgrade or if it’s better to save some more. Perhaps there’s a possibility to try it and some other options out.

God I hope there's a difference, with that kind of price difference. I don't understand why there are so many of these $100 violin vs $10K, 100K, $10M violin. It's rediculous. Why can't someone do a comparison between a $50 or $100 violin vs a $200, $300, or $500 violin? My feeling is that most shoppers of a beginner violin might make a jump from $100 to a few hundred. No way are they going to be looking at $1000+. Who in their right mind is going to shop for a $100 to if they're good and wealth enough to even be looking at $1K + violins?

I've got reviews on my channel of violins below $ 100, around $ 200 and around $ 500 showing and demonstrating exactly the difference and what to look out for. I can't hear the difference. I think B is the most expensive one, but I'm not sure. The sound was fuller, perhaps, with more overtones. But I'm not sure. I had to listen twice, trying to understand the sound. Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise to have such bad ears as mine, since my violin is a cheap one. I want to believe that if it was live, I'd be able to hear the difference. I can definitely hear the difference between my bad violin and better violins I hear in the Queen Elisabeth Competition, or even from street musicians. But my violin is really bad and I only ever hear it played by myself, making it even worse. I'm sure if you played it, it'd sound expensive!

@@violinlounge Hi, zlata. Always nice to watch your videos . I ended up buying a Chinese violin from a local seller here in Miami. His name is Emmanuel Berberian and has a business called Allegro music center. He sells several types of violins inspected and setup by by them. It cost me $295. It's a beginner's violin and probably not the best one. This is my first violin ever and I never played another one to compare but for the price I think it does the job.

To me A violin sounds brighter and more metallic. Also the sound isnt as clear, the sound being somewhat dirtier.
