Excellent review! It looks like this one has some potential as a good PNP model, but the included FC is killing it... lol I bet it would be a lot more successful if they sold a PNP kit and knocked off most of the price tag to something reasonable. Or even, at the very least, unlocked the firmware to let you set it up properly. Even better if they cooperated with AP to get an official target for it.

There's a bigger brother to the T1 Ranger on the cusp of release from Hee Wing. Given the introductory price of around $300 for the T2, I don't think ZMO's got a chance pushing too many of these ZMP Pro's.

_"In some regards this aircraft is absolutely fantastic.... But in other regards... Not so much."_ The laugh, and the sly smile that followed that statement, pretty much sums up my thoughts on it also. Somebody in engineering had great ideas, novel solutions, and terrible communication skills. I get the impression the software team was given less than 72 hours to ship a product, however. Or they're just drunk, not sure. Their FC implementation is the worst, by far, I've seen so far from VTOL PNP kits, making Hee Wing's Autopilot implementation look premium. In fact, for a third of the price, go for a Ranger VTOL PnP

Thank you for the honest and full review. I have always wondered how/why this thing costs so much. Sad to see it isn't worth it. On the jittering - My only guess would be that they are using digital servoes which tend to have a minor amount of jitter under load (normal). That jitter is then exacerbated by the FC trying to correct for the vibrations and it oscilates. Beyond that, I don't know what could be causing the jittering you see on the servos.

@willay747 Жыл бұрын
I have had many many successful flights with mine. (Probably 15+) The FW isn't the best and I wish they would unlock more of it, but, NOT everything is the firmware!! For example, the plane will RTL when the voltage gets low. You were at around 14 volts which is the trigger voltage for RTL. Also, when the aircraft gets home it will circle until it gets to the RTL home altitude. I think on mine I set it to 75 meters so it circles until it gets to 75 meters and then transitions to quad mode. You do have a weird little issue there with that shaking on the 2 front motor servos and the plane going left for a sec when you turn right. Mine does not do either so maybe you do have a noise issue or bad ESC? Also, do you have the latest FW loaded in it??? You do not mention that. Have you tried a different RX in it?
@gizfpv Жыл бұрын
That's good to know. I did mention in the video that not everyone has issues with this plane and some people have had success with it. Just seems to be that the majority of ZMO owners have had nothing but trouble. Yes I had the latest firmware loaded (D9), it was mentioned at 20:24. And yes I did try a different RX. Originally I had a Crossfire receiver installed, but later changed to a ELRS receiver (this was mentioned at 22:31). I'd be disapointed if RTH was trigged by low voltage at just 14 volts. This thing runs a Li-ion pack, it should be configured for low voltage at something more like 12 volts. As for the aircraft circling, I'm not sure what that was about. The aircraft continually gained and lost height as it circled, but it never seemed able to progress from that point. It certainly didn't seem like it was trying to reach a target altitude
@willay747 Жыл бұрын
@@gizfpv You can change the voltage at which it RTL. I did end up lowering mine. As you said, if only we had more control of the FW values it would be much nicer. Please do an update if you go to another FC! Thanks
@MadRC Жыл бұрын
Wow that’s is a lot wrong. As you say it’s a nice looking piece of HW but I suspect they have real issues with their FC and the flight stack. The FC hardware is a worry to me. They appear to have modified Ardupilot and that in its self is against their licence rules if they have not published back but they also clearly have made changes that have caused issues. They would be far better just shipping it with stock Ardupilot and actually supporting the project and then the dev team would be more than happy to help them get this right. This is a classic of what happens when companies just take OS software and then modify it sell that in their own hardware and it’s just a massive shame. Open source software may be free but you need to treat it with respect.
@gizfpv Жыл бұрын
I didn't get around to saying it in my video, but I too have wondered if the flight controller itself might have some issues. The way the aircraft spontaneously changes flight modes - that to me sounds more like the result of a physical malfunction in the FC rather than a software glitch. And yup, totally agree about the firmware. They should have either installed generic ardupilot and allowed us to tinker, or installed their own completely custom self written firmware

Congrats on being honest about this product. Being an Ardupilot guru :) the issues with turning, jitter etc. must be caused by the servos. I've had problems with certain servos or servos being analog vs. digital. Ardupilot is an excellent software however, it is not intended for novice pilots. Don't get me wrong, I am not implying you are a novice pilot. Still, Arduplane requires TLC.
@gizfpv Жыл бұрын
The reason why I think the servo jitter is being caused by the firmware somehow, is because the problem isn't present when the aircraft isn't armed. When I tell the tilt servos to move up and down whilst the motors are inactive there's no jitter at all. It only happens when the motors are spinning. Guess it could be vibration that's upsetting a gyro or something and causing a odd reaction, but still, I feel that's something that would be fixable in firmware? Idk tbh. And as for being a ardupilot novice, I absolutely am one. I've only been using ardupilot around a year, and in that time I've only lightly dabbled with it really lol
@FPV420. Жыл бұрын
@@gizfpv If you still have the plane you may check for loose connections anywhere on the plane. I had to use hot glue to stop nasty servo jitter on random basis. You may also try to push the pins on the servo connectors too. The sofware cannot cause jitter like shown on your video. It's either loose connection or RF noise. Best of luck.

Interesting idea, although I don't think that's the case. At the moment where the aircraft when into RTL by itself the RSSI was 64, yet on many occasions throughout the flight that value went way lower, even reaching 37 at one point. At no other point though, even with much lower RSSI values, did the aircraft go into RTL. I’m no newb to FPV, mostly quads. I’ve built an own over 30 FPV quads. So out of all of the VTOLs you have flown, what is your recommendation? T1 Ranger VTOL?? And why? I want something that is pretty stable, so probably not the smaller aircrafts. This is the main reason why I looked at this one, but I do want to have a full unrestricted Ardupilot experience. I also heard that the air speed sensor should have been mounted on the nose of the plane, which is probably causing some issues. Thanks. Love your content!

I’m not sure which version of the plane that you had. I know he had issues with the servos and things like that so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with this one. T1 Ranger VTOL is a great aircraft. Think the only reason someone may want a ZMO instead is if they wanted to carry a Gopro or similar
@sputniksam Жыл бұрын
I must admit this aircraft peeked my interest at first, that is until I was made aware of the price, and the problems you and others have encountered. It's never good practice to base your firmware on an opensource platform and then lock the users out of it. It didn't work for the Hexo+, the Simtoo range of drones, and countless others whom based their products on Ardupilot and have long since evaporated into obscurity, all because they wouldn't engage with the community. At least Parrot and 3DR released everything for the Disco and Solo respectively, and still some eight years after the Solo was put out to graze it still has a very active user base. Maybe OMPHobby should consider releasing a cheaper ARF version of this model and allow those inclined to install a full fledged Pixhawk controller, which their FC is obviously a poor facsimile of.

This type of review is necessary. I have the first version of this plane but probably wouldn't have bought it had the reviews at the time been a bit more clear. The osd being non movable and being stuck in FBWA with the throttle being either fast or slow makes it really boring to fly. I understand why they did it but would have probably been a deal breaker for me

Unfortunately these days most reviewers are actually little more than salesmen. They don't really review a product, they try sell it too you, but only highlighting the positives and carefully choosing to conceal the negatives. I refuse to be that type of KZbinr. If a product is rubbish I'm gonna say so lol

The first thing I do on flight controllers is disable the prearm it’s really annoying, If Indont want to use GPS? Come on!!!!

That's fair enough, however I think it's always better for safety's to be enabled by default, rather than have to enable them yourself. Certainly better for the noobs that way lol

That’s a really nice airframe let down by bad code. But VTOLs are all about the software so shame on them.
@gizfpv Жыл бұрын
Yup, that's the unfortunate but unavoidable truth. All we can hope is that Omphobby fix the firmware

@@gizfpv tear out and replace that fc immediately!

Locked down broken firmware with no opportunity for the community to fix it. That's all I need to know.

I dont do social media, and you don't have your email listed via youtube, but I am interested in sponsoring your idea to put a F405-Vtol in it.
@gizfpv Жыл бұрын
That's very generous of you. However I no longer own this aircraft. I didn't trust it, and didn't wanna pay out my own pocket to try fix it, so I sold it on months ago

Understood, thanks for the reply.

I love the Kit model, but, since the first it appear and review by a few videos, i decide to leave it behind, it would be great if have a pnp without FC, or KIT instead
