So much great information here! Thank you!! The one little thing that I would add from my experience working as a Samples Assistant Manager for Jessica McClintock is that sometimes sewing contractors make mistakes. We once had a sewing contractor sew an entire bundle with the fabric INSIDE OUT! We couldn't reuse the fabric because it would a) take too much time to rip apart, b) ruin most of the fabric in taking apart, c) not be send out to showroom floors with the wrong side out even if it was a sample. So, it is always a good rule of thumb to have excess fabric on hand for just such an emergency. Jessica McClintock used an enormous amount a Venetian laces so we always had to be sure to have extra on hand, or at least a very, very close facsimile to replace it with. Again, thanks so much!!

What a cool story/experience and yes, I am also old enough that I had a rotary phone then the corded then the cordless that only went like 20 feet with the pull out antenna and pagers!! Omg do you remember those last two? I do! Anyways these kiddos will unfortunately never understand what it's like to have to schedule your day/week when you have to be at home or in the office to catch a phone call. The book I carried around with me every time I left the house was depending on how long I've had it (would catch all my receipts, notes whatever and get bulky fast) was dainty or a fat chunk of life that could be easily stolen which happened once. I'm not in the fashion industry but I love your channel and find you inspirational and get pretty good ideas when listening to you chat. Hope you're doing great! Take care!

Thank you so much for your instructional videos. I appreciate them so much. I had a book arrive in the mail yesterday. Print, Make, Wear. By Melanie Bowles. It instructs the reader how to design prints using photoshop. It is step by step. In the back of the book, is a list of companies in the USA, who will take your design and print out your fabric. I checked into some of these companies, and they will do small runs of fabric at very reasonable prices. There are many fabrics to choose from. I was so excited to find out this information. Sorry if someone has already posted about this, I read thru the comments to check. Thanks again for your wonderful videos.

Lovely video and great information. Just one suggestion, maybe if the videos were shorter and packed and more specific, say you talk about prints and fabrics from a person working in a company's POV and about making prints and repeats in a seperate video, and maybe about choosing the right kind of prints for the occasion and fabric in another, It'd be much more easier to watch and understand. Thank you

I would like to suggest a individual presentation regarding print (broadly) suitability for individual garment Construction/architecture. (If you have already I apologize.) You have talked about that here and I have seen some here and there but I think better understood with examples. My brand is typically not Mass producible. Wish I could show a of one of my works, I think you would see that right after color. Consumers on the other hand only see the overall effect. In other words I have yet to receive a compliment or appreciation for the time, experience and extra fabric to achieve three-quarters of that stunning effect. My point is That attention would cost a huge amount of money to mass produce. With out it stunning only in mistake. I think that a very important consideration for selecting prints and even more important designing a print. Understood best with actual prepared examples, I can think of a long list of unfortunate 'mistakes' that could be avoided before getting to the sample construction phase.

Because of I'm considering you a very good professor I just wanna make you a new question...Last time I showed off my portfolio they criticized me because it doesn't make evidence of contemporary fashion awareness (instead, they say, my design looks contemporary). How do you think I can explain my contemporary fashion awareness into portfolio's design process?
@zoehongteaches8 жыл бұрын
I would create a trend report. Go out and do research both online and in stores if you can, take pictures, create a collage of what trends are popular right now. Add some text and drawings showing how you think the trends will evolve into new things. You can make that like a secondary concept board for your project.

And how old were you when you got into these kind of stuff?
@zoehongteaches8 жыл бұрын
I wanted to be a fashion designer since forever. I read a lot of fashion magazines and I drew people wearing clothes I designed. I drew constantly. I didn't take any art classes until high school though. I took all kinds: drawing, painting, pottery, jewelry making, figure drawing, screenprinting, whatever they offered at school. It's good to explore and get a solid foundation of skills. And then I went to a fashion school right after high school. I would recommend read fashion sites, learning some sewing basics, and figure drawing basics to start. Good luck!

@zoehongteaches6 жыл бұрын
I don't know much about making lace. In terms of prints, you'd be better off talking out your project with an experienced print shop--they will tell you more than I can about what works on what fabrics, what's more cost efficient, etc.

Textile designers design prints for fabric. They can work for a textile company to design prints and these prints get sold to lots of different designers or they can work for a clothing company to design prints just for that clothing brand.

I wonder how they manage to always put certain prints and graphics in the same place on all items, for example, a dress with small prints but a larger print at the hem (without cutting fabric) or a print that emphasizes the waist. Does this result in a lot of fabric waist, or is there software that optimizes for as little fabric waist as possible also indicating exactly where the fabric needs to be cut? I would be grateful if anyone has insights on this.
@TheCreativeCurator2 жыл бұрын
To get the print in specific areas, you need to learn about 'print engineering'. Peter Pilotto, Mary Katrantzou and some other UK based designers use a lot of print engineering in their collections (I learned while interning at Peter Pilotto years ago).

Can dye facilities dye fabric that is already colored? Lets say I have a camel colored wool but want it a different color.
@zoehongteaches8 жыл бұрын
If you have a camel colored wool and want it to look like brand new forest green wool, then no. It will look muddy and the green dye will probably not be colorfast. If you want it to look uneven and obviously overdyed to create a visual texture, then possibly, but make sure you communicate your expectations to your dyer. Some dyers will not take on a project like that because of potential liabilities involved.
