This is the Dohnanyi Synagogue in Budapest, used by Eichmann to organise the destruction of the Hungarian Jews. Many were kept in the synagogue in winter without heating and died here. I saw it being reconstructed and it now looks beautiful. This orchestra is marvellous! The whole orchestra plays this long piece without a sheet of music in front of them and no conductor waving his arms about. These are truly "musical" musicians.

The Rajko musicians are geniuses. And if you've ever heard them improvise--especially with Sandor Kuti on the cimbalom and the first violinist in this video--it's one of life's most memorable musical experiences. I've attended first class concerts around the world since age two when my parents started taking me to Carnegie Hall yet I have never in my life heard improvisational geniuses like the Rajko. I never knew sounds like that could be created on a violin. It brought tears to my eyes.

Yes, it is classical music and is very charming but it is NOT klezmer at all. By the way, I am glad to read that you have enjoyed it. These dances are Hungarian folk dances originally arranged for simphonic orchestra, than re-arranged for this smaller band. This latter arrangement is as genial as the first. I'd like to know who made it, it is excellent, especially the clarinet and the cimbalom parts.

Not at all. They are gipsy musicians and wearing kippas only because they're performing in a synagogue. The piece itself is one of the most famous works of the Hungarian composer Kodály, who adapted Hungarian folk music to orchestra, folk music that he himself had collected on the spot in villages in the beginning of the last century. It sounds a bit klezmer at first maybe. Thanks for listening.

what is that instrument next to the clarinets? is that chinese instrument, "yangqin"??
@jonaskatona71368 жыл бұрын
Hui Ami It is very similar to the yangqin, actually. Both are forms of what is known to English speakers as the "dulcimer." In Hungary and for Hungarians,it is known as a "cimbalom." It is a traditional Hungarian musical instrument, used in Hungarian folk music, as well as in Hungarian Roma music.

Why the heck should they speak english? If you are so desparate to know what they are saying, how about you learn their language instead of trying to get them to learn yours. This music is from a non-english speaking culture, so they have more of a right to ask you to speak their language as it is their music you are listening to
