I have used this fretboard diagram to break it into 2 basic patterns to make this easier to remember. These 2 patterns are just repeated up and down the fretboard so this enables you to solo using the whole neck. You just have to memorize how to go from one pattern to the next and that comes with practice. I also use this pattern and a memory jogger to determine what mode I'm in. It has greatly improved my ability to solo in any major or minor key and in any mode. Once I know my root I am off and running. Different strokes for different folks for sure but I have been playing guitar for over 50 years and this has been the freedom I've been searching for. Now it's just my creativity at work.

So how should we use this stuff? play along with you, stay in the same boxes, areas, when you go through these patterns, or what? Not sure what to do here..
@zombieguitar Жыл бұрын
This is how you play "in key"... This can be easily understood by simply sitting down at a piano and "noodling around" using only the white keys. Do that, and you'll be playing "in key" (for 1 of the 12 possible keys, all of which work exactly the same way as each other), and all of the notes that you play will sound good together. Translated to the guitar, that's what these patterns are. The only difference is that I used the key of G major for the example, whereas all of the white keys on the piano put you into the key of C major. However all keys work exactly the same way, and the "patterns" on the guitar are exactly the same for all 12 keys. So just "noodle around in key", and it will sound good. That's what these patterns are 😁

@zombieguitar2 жыл бұрын
The relative minor shares the same notes and chords as it's relative major counterpart...and by extension, this results in them also sharing the same "fretboard patterns". This allows you to think in terms of 12 keys instead of 24 keys. I actually made a whole video about it here 😁 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eabLcn-MgrabaNk

Why am I the only one who's noticed that for the first (open) position boxes for Major and Minor, the F# is completely left out? At the G string -1 (negative one) fret; But you included it an 8va higher in the home boxes (i.e., G string fret 11.) You have to build a porch on the box to extend it out to the 4th fret of the D string. Dude! You gotta problem with F#? What could it have done to you that's so bad, you'd leave it out? It's the leading tone for the G Maj diatonic and it's a color note -- it adds flavor to the pentatonic when added. That pattern has been engrained in my mind for years. That F# here is the little pointy headed looking bit of the pattern. They like to relate that pattern to Aeolian (natural minor) because then the first note of the mode (E) falls under the index finger and that poor little F# you find so unworthy of inclusion, is significant when flatted. It's the characteristic note of E Phrygian -- giving us that dark sounding Spanish Flamenco sound. You can't have F as a flatted F# without F# unless you try to blot it out of existence with your nasty little box trick. Something to do with G-strings? What would Freud say about you? I say flat the G string about 15 cents to get that G# to work with both open G AND open E; but you'd have me tune it down 100 cents to get the flippin' F# in the box. Then G would be a min3rd away from D and everything on B and E goes up another fret. That'll fix a lot said no Luthier ever.. So anyway... that F#'s exclusion lessens diversity. Man. I've been sent to HR for way less than that

so the memorizing patterns does t work for me on guitar. because my memory sucks. it the same for memorizing chords on piano. on piano I like to use formulas to find chords. for instance. WWHWWWH for major chord, or lower the third a half step for minor. is there anything like that on guitar?

My problem is not the patterns so much, but changing key. I think I rely on the dots too much, and when I change key I know where I am at first, but get lost when I am trying to use the whole neck. I know they keys move up and down, but when your dots are in a difference place it is so easy to get lost.

For me the best approch is the 5 patterns approch: it mixes the patterns for pentatonis scale and the five positions of the CAGED system. And no fingers extensions...
@zombieguitar3 жыл бұрын
The only thing about that is that CAGED isn't about "positions". It is about being able to play any chord, anywhere on the entire neck of the guitar...it's a different goal than the "scale positions" one that we are talking about here!

@zombieguitar Жыл бұрын
I hear ya!! With all the conflicting information out there, this stuff can definitely get confusing. What you are looking for right now, at this point is simply the "diatonic scale". Do not worry about modes right now, and do not worry about the CAGED system....(yet). What you are trying to achieve right now is to map out the 7 notes of a key, and doing so by recognizing the "movable patterns" on the guitar. None of this has to do with MODES!!!

@michaelvarney.3 жыл бұрын
You can use a mirroring plugin that flips the screen left to right. Yes, the letters are written backwards, but the red dots still show roots. Alternatively, and this is probably some effort but will bring you ahead by leaps and bounds, you can construct your own left hand diagrams by translating the right hand ones. This really makes you look at your fretboard and understand what is going on.
