The Bill Murray part was originally written for Sylvester Stallone but he dropped out just as we were beginning to shoot. The script was rewritten with several other actors in the role, including Mathew McConaughey, but they all, eventually, declined. Finally, as we were shooting and between set-ups, Woody called up an old buddy who was in town (Atlanta) shooting another movie (Get Low). While we all eavesdropped on the conversation, Bill Murray said yes and a few days later we shot his scenes.

8:08 - "Does this draw the zombies out? Your little zombie song..." - Actually, it's a very well known "riff" from the movie Deliverance, and has become virtually synonymous with hillbillies, which Harrelson's character could be considered to be. The line "You got a purty mouth." is also from Deliverance, showing that the character himself was referencing that movie.

This script was originally written as a TV pilot for a series but not network bought it, so it was turned into a movie script. Had it been a series we would've found out more of Columbus' rules as it went along and had a different Zombie Kill of the Week for each new episode. It also explains why Little Rock and Wichita, who had been shown to be very smart throughout the movie would all of sudden turn stupid and not realize that turning on the amusement park would attract every zombie in the area. They didn't have a "movie ending" in the original TV script.

One of my favorite stories has to do with this movie. On Thanksgiving back in 2010, I was having Thanksgiving with family. Afterwards, part of the family is watching football. Meanwhile, my Uncle Fred is telling a story with myself, my mother, my Aunt Ruth(Not married to my Uncle Fred), and her kids Mallory, Meredith, and Alex around the table. On Halloween that year, Uncle Fred was in charge of candy distribution. While handing out candy on this one occasion, he looks down the walkway and sees a guy he recognizes. After a moment of trying to figure who it is, my uncle thinks,”Wait, isn’t that Bill Murray?”(Murray is associated with the local minor league baseball team and has a house not far from my aunt and uncle.) This naturally elicited a response out of me. My mom reacted. Aunt Ruth reacted. Mallory and Meredith reacted. However, Alex was perplexed as he asked,”Who’s Bill Murray.” As the rest of us are shocked,” I start rattling off movies from the ‘80’s like “Ghostbusters” and “Caddyshack.” Alex is still confused. So, I mention “Groundhog Day”, which doesn’t do any better. In my mind, I’m thinking,”I’ve never wanted to hit you before but I’m really thinking about it now.” I realized that I pretty much went through the Bill Murray scene here with me as Tallahasee and Alex as Little Rock.

Funny (probably an Easter egg) about him being scared of clowns. Jessie Eisenberg grew up one town over from me and his mom was a professional birthday clown. Her name was Bonabennie. We had her do all my birthdays until I was about 8 and she stopped doing it because she got pregnant with Jessie’s sister who turned out to be the curly haired Pepsi girl. So Jessie was at a bunch of my birthdays with his clown mom and I guess he’s scared of his mom haha.

Double tap is a real thing in the military. In a military context, a "double tap" refers to a military tactic in which a target is struck twice in quick succession, often used to maximize the chances of neutralizing the target. The legality of such tactics in warfare is governed by international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions. Deliberate attacks on civilians or non-combatants are considered war crimes, and excessive or indiscriminate use of force can also be in violation of international law. To simplify, once someone is lying on the ground whether they're dead or alive. It is a military tactic/habit to shoot them again while in front you. It is only considered war crime after you go past that body and shoot it or shoot again. So the soldiers are to make sure they're shot dead before walking over or past the bodies on the ground. Again, soldiers are not doctors and chances of not making sure they're dead can cost them their lives like sneak/surprise attack on them cuz they didn't kill sweep them all first before doing anything else.

I love the message of this movie. So many people look at zombie apocalypse media and say "well, I'd just look out for myself, to hell with everyone else." Yeah, okay, that's great. . . but evade and kill all the zombies you want, sooner or later you're going to die. Disease, injury, old age, something's going to get you. Life is 100% fatal, the rest is just details. So what's going to outlive you? what are you going to leave behind? Just a prepped shelter and a bad smell? Or are you going to build something, have other people who will remember you when you're gone? All of the characters pretty much start off just looking out for themselves, but learn to trust and open themselves up to each other, and build a foundation not just for surviving, but LIVING.
