Kevin. I like suggestions on month by month videos. I had a book like that once but it went through a house fire and I don't remember the name of it and they stopped making it. The man died years ago who wrote it so my only hope is Amazon but I can't remember the name of the man who wrote it. He did a victory garden and a flower garden book. I loved his personal touch to it as well as if he was speaking right to me. Can you help me?

Excellent video. I am in zone 3b. My father, before his death, had a 50x75 foot garden every year for 30 years & was in the soil as soon as it was workable in the spring. He always grew the cool weather crops that could handle a light frost, which included cabbage, cauliflower, peas & spinach. This would be applicable for late summer & early fall as well. Brussel sprouts are another great fall crop. As mid April into May set in, he started on early potatoes such as Norkotas..

Not sure, but Amazon has a book by James Underwood Crockett called "Crockett's Victory Garden" which is dated 1977. Also Bob Thompson wrote a book called "The New Victory Garden" (there was a PBS TV show by the same name but not sure if it's the same guy". Either of those might be the one that you're seeking.

When gardeners speak of "no debris in the soil," would it be best to use a screen to make sure the soil is fine, or do you/they mean just rocks and any bigger wood chips? Our beds are brand new and the soil/ compost does have some tiny wood chips mixed in it.

Parisian market and such varieties of carrot grow wide and bulbous, not long, I've successfully done them in a shallow container in my potted balcony veg garden. They come in winter and summer varieties like normal carrots as well. If anyone is miffed about not having deep enough containers for carrots I highly recommend looking for seeds of bulbous cultivars like Parisian Market

I grow beets by seeds, though you can speed up the process growing by starts. I would caution against it though, because we're growing beets for their tap root and don't want to disturb that too much once it starts growing!

Yeah, the weather has changed. I go by The Old Farmers Almanac & it said 10B was good for planting root vegetables (especially carrots) on August 5th & 6th this year. There’s another root vegetable planting date next month. Planting happens just about every two weeks, almost year round, with above ground crops going in on the 24th & 25th next. I spend time at the end of the year getting an early copy of the planting dates for the year to come & then plan a year of planting with the Almanac before the new year starts. It has dates for every zone & tips on the best planting dates for some of the most popular crops. After that it’s up to us consumers to decide on crop rotation, companion planting, & other strategies on our own. The Almanac hasn’t let me down yet.

Remember the property you're on will most likely have microclimate pockets. The hardiness number is only a very general starting off point, not canon. Even planting on the north or south side of your house, or against a wall, can influence what can be planted in a season.

Kevin, thanks so much for all your valuable knowledge. I live in south FL zone 10b and am wondering if you could do a video dedicated to starting seeds in trays outdoors/indoors for areas that have no frost or very little risk. Most gardening shows talk of starting seeds based on frost dates but here the real threat is the heat, humidity and summer rains so when should we plant seedlings? Thanks so much.

I also live in South Florida. I’ve been speaking to nurseries and they’ve been telling me plant doesn’t begin until late August/early September so they don’t have any plants yet. I grew my tomato plants this summer so I have not gotten any tomatoes so I’m hoping that planting at the right time will fix this. As for starting the seeds, I’ve always leave them outdoors since I’m moving away from direct sowing since plants like tomatoes benefit from being planted deep.

@@Michael-zn2jc I did the same! I planted some tomatoes just to test early over the summer and they never fruited so obviously too hot out. I since started my seed tray in mid July and so far so good. I'll probably plant first week of Sept and hope for the best.

Kevin, I noticed this video is dated 2016, this is 2018, are you still making videos? Were the time zones based on USDA or Sunset? I'm thinking USDA. The video was very good. Thank you.

No one ever talks about what can be grown in Zone 12b. I am trying to build a new garden here in Hawaii, but all of my gardening was done years ago on the mainland. I have no clue what varieties will even grow here and what will not.

Most of England is zone 8-9, anyway. That's why the zone map is only a meager starting point, as I'm in 8b (Austin, tx), but growing conditions here are widly different than say, London.

Interesting, but here in zone 9, I don't see the sense in planting tomatoes, zucchini (as some recommend), or any summer crop in August since the ones I planted in spring will just keep on producing. Unless, of course, you didn't get around to it in spring for some reason or the earlier one didn't do well. We have hot summers, and I tend not to do much in the garden besides watering and harvesting, unless I really have to.

Honestly here in Zone 10 it's like a second summer right now, so if you've got transplants you can totally make it work

Thanks for the video and good ideas. I'm eager to start on my Z6 fall garden and have romanesco seeds so those are going in today. Regarding carrots-I've seen folks have great results in 10" pots. I just harvested a pot yesterday. I used a loose potting mix and they were straight and sweet and the pots are mobile as needed. I'll never grow them in the ground. Here's the link to my inspiration: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKWpq5RsZtSErrs (the great reveal). Now, they're not very long-about 6" but it's a great option for patio/balcony gardening or those like me where my ground space is dedicated.
