Ian Hislop called out Mercer in 2019 on HIGNFY, Mercer was getting paid £80K a year for not much work with veterans, then the firm went bust. In our area, Manchester, around 30% of rough sleepers in the City Centre are reckoned to be ex-service people. That's a shameful statistic, and the numbers sleeping rough are steadily rising.

This entire Govt is unfit for office.

@chatham43 Жыл бұрын
@george...PR would be true democracy. Unfortunately both Labour and the tories are complicit in continuing with FPTP. What's your view?
@GeorgeGeorgeOnly Жыл бұрын
@@chatham43 Well I suppose, Chatham, one has to understand the origins of First Past the Post, and it is very simply that before Labour was ever a thing, back when the British imperialism was at its hight, there were only two political parties and so it’s not difficult to understand that PR would have seemed pretty pointless to everyone and anyone. And it’s not difficult to imagine either how both the Tories and the Wigs (Conservatives and Liberals) may have seen Labour in the beginning as interlopers into the parliamentary system. Interestingly, the Libs became the 3rd party, as Labour grew, and the Tories have always somehow remained (albeit marginally) as the most predominant, conservative by name and by nature, as they stand to be the most conservative in their views about what sort of an electoral system the nation should adhere to, “”and if 3rd parties don’t like it, well they should stand down!”” Needless to say, I believe, it was the Liberals who first began to talk about PR. So, the Tories have always been about power, wealth and supporting the elites, (and are the most electorally successful party) while Labour became the Tory’s nemesis and the Libs seem to have vaguely fallen somewhere in between. Unfortunately, (and I reckon this reflects British society) in order for Labour to obtain the power of majority of seats in the commons, I believe they’ve been kind-of forced to play the Tories at their own game, if you see what I mean? And so as One of the Two main parties, their attitude towards other parties have perversely become not so dissimilar to that of their nemesis, the Tories. Because, let’s face it, would Labour have been able to enact the social reforms which they have achieved without being able to gain powerful majorities in the HoC? However, I believe there is now very strong support throughout the Labour movement for PR, and it seems predictable that Labour are the party more likely to deliver it. But the Tories are likely to resist PR the most because they have the most to lose by it. So that’s my take. Cheers, and Happy new year!

Mercer doesn’t seem mature enough to realise that he is defending neither his reputation nor his promise by being so thin skinned and personally insulting his critics. Especially when he descends to using foul language and egregious falsehoods. By all means, clarify that he meant a certain category of, “homelessness,” if he feels that makes the facts any better. But the concerns raised by Captain Thomas and Vorderman remain perfectly true and perfectly legitimate. They are talking about a crisis which is worsening and which needs to be addressed. Mercer may have a six year old’s understanding of politics, but he doesn’t have the right to inflict that on the general public. But, there is no discipline in his party and I’m sure Sunak will do nothing as per usual.

Veterans and pensioners are treated appallingly when they need the most help in their elder years. It’s beyond cruel.

Mercer's response to Carol Vorderman's criticism is another demonstration of the Tories lack of moral fortitude, and their apparent adoption of the Donald Trump module for government.

The Tories see addicts with mental health issues as another target for pejorative electioneering and punitive rabble rousing policy initiatives (punishment) and I expect its naive of homelessness, best you can do is provide a ladder for those who can reach for it, or you need that conspicuously that as well or everyone so affected.

Jeepers creepers, Mercer really has become a Lazybones and instead of trying to Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive he's gone for the G.I Jive because he's probably been Drinking Again and as Fools Rush In he's ignored The Facts of Life and Come Rain or Come Shine he's spinning That Old Black Magic by Whistling Away the Dark insinuating that the Labour party is Out of this World and How Little We Know. I'm Old Fashioned but I Remember You, indeed I'd Know You Anywhere and Something's Gotta Give and though I'm Past My Prime and this is not My Shining Hour, I still think Mr. Mercer should Hit the Road to Dreamland In the Cool, cool, cool of the Evening, stop the Charade, acknowledge the Days of Wine and Roses are over and he should hand in his resignation to The Phony King of England. Can you spot the 23 Johnny Mercer songs?

It's the first time in my life I've heard of this Johnny Mercer, I hate his parents though for bringing the name of the great lyricist Johnny Mercer into disrepute by name association.

I wondered if this was the same Johnny Mercer. You did really superbly with the songs. All that, and cleverly interwoven.

I think he has tried his best, but he needs to admit its not worked, and has more work to do. If he’s in parliament long a enough.

Even if Mercer's statement was true, surely he should also be making sure he is working for everyone else too. Or is he just hitching himself to a specific bandwagon

Migrants SHOULD be a priority over veterans. No one made veterans go to war, no one forced them to join the military. Migrants HAVE been forced to do something drastic, so they should get our help first. Veterans shouldn't be rewarded for making bad career choices.
