More than a quarter of a million people visit this beautiful zoo in Rhineland-Palatinate every year. Over 1,500 animals from almost 200 different species can be seen here. The Neuwied Zoo was opened in 1970, and animals from Australia were particularly well represented at that time.
A specialty of this zoo is its breeding success, especially the breeding of various species of parrots. But African ostriches and pelicans were also able to successfully breed here. From the 1980s onwards, elephants, gorillas and hippos were also housed here. A large seal enclosure with an underwater viewing tunnel and North Sea ambience followed in 1995.
Since March 2008 there has been a New World monkey enclosure lined with rock walls. In 2010, meerkats also moved into the zoo. At Neuwied Zoo, special emphasis is placed on looking after children and schools are offered a corresponding offer as part of their own educational concept.
The motto “Understanding Zoology!” focuses on learning with all the senses. Children and adults should be made aware of the need to preserve biological diversity and protect nature and species. This is what we want to achieve here by igniting enthusiasm through experiencing the animals. You can only love what you know and you are only willing to protect what you love. This is how we want to approach the topic in such a simple but also sustainable way.
Everyone can find their favorite animal here. The Neuwied Zoo is the largest zoo in Rhineland-Palatinate and a visit to the zoo can be a pleasure even on rainy days, because the large animal houses are of course fully available to visitors even in bad weather.
Visitors can watch penguins, seals and meerkats being fed at different times throughout the day.
