Kucheza The Chimp Is Back By Popular Demand And This Time He Meets Dad!

@SedgwickCoZoo Sedgwick County Zoo's Chimp Mom Mahale was a bit apprehensive, which is exactly what the keepers expected. She wanted Father Moshi to meet Kucheza but only if he kept his distance!
She has allowed him to get closer since the initial introduction but he continues to be incredibly respectful of her space.
***a note about the background noise: there are fans throughout the behind the scenes area for circulation and one of them is right next to this spot. they are not as loud as they seem on camera - microphones just have a way of amplifying wind noise and this happens to be the best spot for filming!

@@SapphirasMama I read that! I started following the zoo on Facebook. There's a lot more updates there. There were a few videos and it looked like everyone was accepting of him. It's so sad. He was loved by people the world over! His mama definitely loved him. She would not have intentionally hurt that baby! His grip could have loosened and he fell. Accidents happen. My heart aches for Mahale. Thanks for responding. HNY!

@@eagse They came in one morning and he was dead in mom's arms. It was blunt force trauma. An accident. It took a couple of days before Mahale set him down for them to take the baby. So sad.

There's one small baby chimp born 6 months ago. His name is Dill. He was born on 6 June 2022. The mother is very careful. She was 16 years old when she gave birth to him. She holds him to her chest all the time. The mother's name is Mikan. She has to younger half brothers n she's like a mom to both of them.

Mothers ROCK! This is why humans must do everything they can to return babies to the powerful, maternal figure who carried them. She is their primary nurturer, and protector. That baby will do so much better in life if they are raised by HER, than by any other false, surrogate mama. Like humans, chimps typically give birth to one baby at a time, with twin births a possible but infrequent event. Chimp mothers breast feed their baby for around 5 years, and will not get pregnant with another baby during that time. The mother-baby, maternally driven bond between primate mamas and their offspring is strong and lengthy. That means it is crucial to the youngsters' development. The chimp baby is socialised by its mother and protector, during that first, critical 5-year period of dependence. If the baby loses even a fraction of that all-important nurturing and development time with Momma, the consequences for Junior's physical, mental and emotional development can be profound. RESPECT to you, magnificent Mahale! You are a mighty mother to your beautiful son Kucheza. My heart is broken. This beautiful baby chimp died very this week. According to the news, Kucheza died. Zookeepers found him dead. Mahale was still carrying him because she was not yet ready to put him down.

Four pregnancies and all dead babies. I will say it again, she should be separated from ALL of the other chimps. I take back what I said about Moshi. Given her history, clearly Bea killed Kucheza. Out of jealousy, she stole him from Mahale and either accidentally or purposely killed him. If kept with the group, she will only cause more baby chimps, herself and the others, pain and suffering. I drove through Kansas once. Terrible place.
