Zoom 4040 Guitar multi effects from the dark ages....

When I was young I considered this to be the holy grail of multi effects. I eventually got one, and I was disappointed because it didn't do all the bleeps and pings of the lower-model 3030. What I didn't understand at the time was that the 4040 is more about 'serious' guitar playing rather than cheap thrills.

The first Zoom 9002 to wear on the guitar strap came out in 1989 so what you have there is the mid-90s flagship aimed at budget markets. Their pro-range were the 9030, 9150 etc

Ironically I found that the 3030 sounded significantly better than the 4040. Personal preference, I guess!

Had one of these back in the 90s. Loved it. It was used for gigs. I was in a couple of Death Metal bands back then. I regret parting ways with it to this day but at the time I’d thought I’d found a better replacement in one of the RP floor processors Digitech started putting out in the late 90s. In the end I was wrong, but by then it was too late as Zoom stopped making this particular model. Hands down, one of the coolest features was that it had the capability of switching your amps channels. I actually dialed in all my patches and was able to use this as a proper pre amp to give me the amount of boost I needed to get really brutal and aggressive tones with my overdrive channel through the effects loop. I pairs this with a JCM 900. I hope I can find one on eBay or I really hope Zoom thinks about rereleasing an updated version in a metal chassis. The plastic the original is made out of is strong but prone to cracking. Bottom line, I miss having one of these.

Agreed. I liked the Zoom 3030 even better and have decided never to sell it. I also agree with you that Zoom should do a series of re-releases, some of their old gear can still outperform the new stuff. Great comment, thanks heaps :) Gearfacts

I remember when my guitar teacher started playing around with zoom in the early nineties (he was a tradionalist), showed me his first Zoom. He was geeked on it. And now that he plays all over the world, hangs out with Sting...well let's just say that to me, this "vintage" device in any passionate player's hands could still produce some good licks for the masses.

wow! blast from thepast! I used to own a 1010 tiny little multieffects. Back in the day going the analog pedal was the best way! those multieffects sounded too processed! but were nice and cheap ;)

Cool well if you liked that, then stand by for my Zoom 3030 retro review which I'll upload later tonight -the 3030 was the best in the series and it's off the chart... Thanks for watching Gearfacts!

Still unashamedly using the Zoom 1010. Dist color is amazing. It seems to me better than 3030. Dist color number 5 (Drive master), Gain 16, Tone 3 & ZNR 3!!! Pure vintage with power.

The sonic quality of this device is much better than I expected. It depends a lot on the chosen fx and settings. Phaser and delays are very good, pitch shifting is not bad, better than some boss multi fx. I dont need amp simulation so did not check it. There are many vintage multi fx that are worse sounding and less easy to program.

oh wow. This belongs in a museum! I used this one in actual gigs for years! I pushed it as far as one could possibly do. I was always super annoyed by how drastic the sound cut was when you changed from one patch to another, but it was trusty!! Obviously being unable to change the order of the effects rack and the questionable Preamp and EQ/Amp Sim were its lowest points. The Pitch shifter/whammy was also quite cheap. Delays were alrightish back then and having a fixed separated volume pedal totally shaped my sound.

Ahh button soldering ...a total pain to do but very rewarding in the end... It's becoming less and less cost-effective to repair things these days unfortunately. A lot of good gear is going into the garbage :( GF

@@limleelimlee Well maybe I was being a bit over-critical. It is good for what it is - It just has a VERY 80's/90's kind of sound to it. If it's available very cheap then I guess it'd be fun to check it out again :)

@@gearfacts Yeah? Well, someone offers it for $40, so I want to try it. I much prefer making some old sound that feels like ears getting deaf. Some sound like it doesn't have high and low frequencies. This one is so rare to get in my country, so I was deeply thinking about it. Your reviews and replies are so helpful to me. Thank you. I will buy and try what is it like. Classic is so classic. No such worthless things to try. Ta.
