In the theme world of the ZOOM Adventure World Gelsenkirchen, you can watch two hyena ladies. Animal keeper Wiebke Wolff introduces us to both of them.
Spotted or laughing hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), which can be seen in the Gelsenkirchen Zoo, are not threatened globally, but is very important to bring people closer to the habitat they inhabit and share with many endangered animals. Thus, they are ambassadors of their living space and of course also part of the educational work.
Hyenas belong to the so-called health police in their habitat, because they sort of tidy up behind the other residents. As a result, they do not get sick and the entire ecosystem remains healthy. It, therefore, makes sense to keep them in zoos at a time when the species is not yet endangered because without the health police every species would have an even harder time.
Therefore, hyenas are good examples of why it is good not to wait for each species until it is threatened and then admit it to the zoos. Key species in particular need protection and research even before they reach a threatened status, because it is about understanding relationships.
Only those who understand the interrelationships of an ecosystem can protect it - that is why hyenas in zoos fulfill a very important task. They also have a special relationship with lions and it is very instructive when the animals live next door, as in the ZOOM Adventure World in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

Hyänen finde ich, haben unter den Menschen ein viel zu schlechtes "Image". Den eigentlich sind es sehr intelligente und untereinander (zumindest die Weibchen) sehr sozial.

Ja, genau darüber spricht auch die Tierpflegerin im Interview und sie erklärt einiges, dass den Leuten eigentlich nachvollziehbar machen sollte, warum man Hyänen eigentlich einfach nur lieb haben kann. 😊
