Great information. Was just about to purchase the h4n pro and after watching this, for a few bucks extra, i'm getting the H5 because of the analog dials. I appreciate it! Saved me so much time in returns and frustration!

@Ajay Singh Audio is TINY. 1Gb will hold approx 3 hours at 48 kHz/16 bit depth rate. Your 32Gb card will hold about 100 hours of CD-quality audio. If you record 15 hours, that's about 45 Gb. Very simple arithmetic.
@vaidehiarts3 жыл бұрын
@Ajay Singh I've never filled up the H4N while recording 24 bit / 48 kHz wave, through an entire day of event shoot. You can record on one card comfortably, or keep a spare one (which one should carry just in case, regardless). If you're recording an event and want light file sizes, 16 bit / 44.1 is the quality of a industry standard Audio CD, so more than good enough. And if you don't plan to tweak the audio too much, you can also get away with recording 320 kbps mp3... hope this helps :)

For concerts/jam sessions/play inns i mostly use Zoom H5, Many years ago i used H4. In studio i used Zoom R24 up to jan 2020. I will start to use Zoom L20 in the studio. I will start to use the Zoom Q2N K4. I mostly will keep using H5. Think of buying the big microphones for the H5. Many hundreds of video's/examples on my channel. I mostly record at gain setting 2 to 3. Then i will avoid clipping. In PC/DAW i normalize to 97% and add some effects from Isotope Ozone to make the sound bigger.

Superb, straight forward. You have greatly helped to make my decision: I have a H4n and I hate the digital screen for input gain and output vol. Your concurrence that the dials are superior seals the deal for me. Excellent video! Thanks!

What he doesn’t tell you is if you are a musician, the H4n pro is the way to go. Multi tracking is easy and you get the benefits of all the effects for guitar and bass included. Multitracking on the H5 you need a college degree to just figure it out.

Good to know: the proprietary connector on the H5/H6 does not provide phantom power - so the extra XLRs can not be used for condensers and the module comes at quite some cost (if you may need 4 XLRs in the future then it is probably cheaper to go with the H6 instead of an H5 with the module). But more interesting is: the old 2013 H6 model is technically exactly the same compared to the "H6 black" refresh (that still comes e.g. with an old micro USB connector) ... they come at the same price ... but the old model had a hard case and an additional mic module (which alone is around 100 bucks) included! 🙁

Oh, wow!! Not having fantom power is a deal breaker for me. Thanks!!
@nmbr7311 ай бұрын
@@WalfredoCirne please note / to be clear: This is only for the extension port: XLR ports added provide no phantom power - as far as I know. The two built in XLRs of the H5 come with phantom power for sure.

This was an excellent video. Very clear explanations and helpful content. I own both the H4n Pro and the H5. I picked up the capsule providing two additional XLR inputs for the exact reason you described. I needed that back up recording function (-12db) because I'd gotten burned on an earlier recording session when the live audio was overdriven and, therefore, useless. I couldn't afford to be in that position a second time! I wish that backup function worked in the other inputs, but I've got the adaptor now, so all is well. Good video!
@JebrilKessler3 жыл бұрын
So if you have the adapter for the h5 then the backup recording will still work but only with the two additional xlr inputs?
@quasiguy3 жыл бұрын
@@JebrilKessler That's correct. For some reason, only the. top microphone inputs (labeled L & R) offer the attenuated dual backup recording. This feature, inextricably, is not available for the line (input 1& 2) recording. It really should be, but it's not.

I just sold my pre 2020 H6 and kit on EBay and am already missing it. I used it as a sound interface using a Tascam 70 dynamic mic and Fethead to make calls using Google voice and my friends said I sounded like I was sitting right there in the same room with them. I might have to get an H5 as I never used more than 2 microphones on the H6. Though, with the 32 bit models coming on line more, these older 24 bit models will be had for a song and break dance.

Hi - Great video. I have 2 questions. You kept referring to the XLR's as mono inputs. However, if I took 2 XLR outs (left and right) from my desk and placed them in the 2 XLR inputs on the bottom of the H5 for example, can those inputs be panned left and right to record stereo. If so.....the 2nd question is can I simultaneously record the 2 XLR's in stereo and also the front XY microphones in stereo as a live recording?? This information will be really useful. Thank you. Peter.
@PeterMossUkulele3 жыл бұрын
@David Stadium Heights Thanks for responding. In the end I went for the H6 trying to "future proof" myself with extra inputs. It allows me to record any or all of the line inputs plus the stereo mics on the front if required - so 6 channels readily available. Peter.

Thanks for the review. I am currently deciding between the Zoom H5 and H6, I hope you could give me some advice on that. I am planning to use the Zoom to record acoustic guitar music, which means that most of the time I would be using either the in-built mic or only two XLR inputs for mics. I am wondering if the H6 is a better quality audio interface than the H5, if I use the zoom as an audio interface in the future? And if I record the music directly into the Zoom with 2 external mics, is the H6 going to produce a better quality recording than the H5? Thank you for your help.

The H4N Pro, H5 and H6 have the same preamps. Very quiet at -120dB EMI A-weighted. www.wildtronics.com/recorderguide.html#.X2TaHzjsZZU. However the headphone amp output on H5 is quite noisy; not sure on the H4N or H6 on that count.
