OMG,Deb Erney, I am so glad I found you.I bought the ZoomH5 three days ago and started watching videos on how to start the recorder and at the end, I was left asking the same question:How do I record my voice correctly using the right steps.I even visited the store today where I bought the recorder, Guitar Center and I was told the employee who could help me with the H5 would be in three days later.The employee at the front door suggested looking it up on the zoomh5 website and you popped up. You hit it on the spot. I bought this unit because I started my KZbin cooking channel, for a year now and I have a friend who constantly tells me I have to improve my lighting, audio,etc.That's why I'm doing my homework and at the end I'll come out with a whole different new look like Diana Ross, I'm Coming Out.....I started with my iPhone, then I bought a Macbook, and now I'm working on buying my camera. I already have the music from Epidemic Sound and it's great!. I love it because its legal to use with your videos. Thank you so much.Chef Garcia from Hollywood.

Finally! It worked. The instructions are so tiny I could not turn it on and called Tech Support. Then when it wouldn't record I didn't dare call them out of fear it might be something as easy. Arming the channels is key. That REC is completely different from REC MODE is good to know. I'm subscribed and eager to see the next vid.

You are going to love your H5. I wouldn’t be without one of the Zoom H5 or H6. Portable, USB recording, direct inputs. Can’t beat it.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. One question: can you use both the L/R and 1/2 inputs to record in stereo file, for example when you want to record a live DJ set from a mixer as well as the ambiance in the room from the mic?

You can. Mic will be 2 tracks and you have two xlr combo jacks for 2 tracks.

DDF GhostHunting you can’t go wrong with ZOOM. I have been using Zoom products for many years and the 2x I had were quickly resolved by an actual Zoom Tech that answered the phone on 3 rings. No menu, no automation.

you can use any of your mixer outputs (depending on which connection as to which adapter to use) into the track/line/input 1 or 2 combo jacks. I like to use the XLR main outputs of my mixer, panned hard right and hard left for channel separation, into track/line/input 1 & 2 of the Zoom H5. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWatdIGAiJJnpdU go to 3:47 and I show you how i setup the Zoom Q8 for recording. Hi, Thank you for this. On my H5, both the 1 and 2 lights come on together, even when pressing only one button. I've seen on some other tutorials that you can put one or the other on individually, or both if you need to, but on mine they do not go on separately. Would you know why? Thank you.

My guess would be you are in “stereo” recording mode instead of “multi” file mode. Page 20 of your H5 manual shows how to do this.

..and one more question...Can you record in Stereo with the XLR mics? I am sometimes asked by an agent to send them an mp3 file rather than a wav. Since you can't record an mp3 in multi mode, is it safe to recored an mp3 in stereo with an XLR mic? I have a CAD E 100S. Thanks, agian.

What I think your trying to ask; how to record live from PA system? I would take one of the L/R outputs from the PA and plug into channels 1 & 2 on the bottom of the H5. IF THE H5 IS SET TO STEREO, One click on the 1 or/and 2 buttons on the front marked 1 2. The H5 does a great job recording from a PA system. Watch that the sound levels going into the H5 are not peaking. This can ruin a recording.

Thank you. I needed this, however, after completing the steps to record and play , I'm getting ""No Channel Record ready"! I just received my new H5 from Amazon (ordered new) 2 days ago. And, am I reading correctly that there's no way to listen to recordings through the system? I was told it worked as a record /playback for notes and one on one interviews among more advanced things. Please help. Thank you.

Fox X you need to select a track to record. Push either the L R 1 2 , in the center of the face. CHANNEL HAS TO BE ARMED OR NO RECORDING. SEE 5:29 ON THIS VIDEO. It does have an onboard speaker but only for rudimentary listening, anything this small is not going to have a great onboard speaker. Any headphones would be much better. If you wanted to record interviews you may have been better suited with the Zoom H2n or Zoom H1 amzn.to/2ZR84r5 Very small, good onboard mics, without the combo jacks.

I did a test recording (stereo) but was unable to hear it at a perceptible level (I used volume control), I then connected my Bose "QuietComfort headphones and didn't get any sound. I plan on buying adequate headphones, mics etc., nevertheless, I would like to hear what the unit sounds like. What is the best audio editing software for a mac? Thanks again. Fox X there may be something wrong with your Zoom if you’ve made sure the recording inputs are selected and made sure the recording volumes were showing proper gain on the sound bar of your zoom. You should hear something from onboard speaker but the volume is very weak and quality not great. I use Logic Pro X and Garageband.

Weird I took out my SD card put it on my reader on my mac I see and can play the audio files on the mac but then when I place it back in the H5 can't play them. It must have something to do with changing the names in the mac. When i changed the names of the files something got changed to where i can't see the files anymore. There is no PROJECT found on the H5. The file ext are zoom009.tr1 not the typical .wav. Any help? Thanks and great info here!

if you change the names or file structure they have to be structured the same. changing the names or files will definitely cause them to not be read. You can also set the song format, MP3-4 or Wav in your H5. Look in the manual for "file structure" or "transport files" and it explains it there.

The mics record as 1-stereo-left and right and yes, you can use the combo jacks as 2 separate channels along with the stereo mics. You can buy the mic adapter that will give you, I believe 2 more inputs? There is also a 3.5mm input on mic capsule that can be used for recording.

Thank you for the great video. I'm having a real issue with my H5 avoiding white noise, I'm also recording acoustic guitar indoors. Do you know how I can avoid as much white noice as possible when recording? Can't find any advice about this anywhere. Thank you :)

my guess is the gain could be turned up too high. if your using the onboard mics sit as close to them as possible. Maybe a foot away. Recording further away can also cause noise.

@@DebErney Really appreciate your response, thank you. yeh I record closer than a foot and gain is even as low as 2 or 3 and I still get the noise. I have a feeling i might have a faulty unit, looking into replacing while still under warranty. Thanks for your help :)

Edward Videos the H4n is better for multi track layering. The H5 has a strange work around but I don’t remember what it was. Call Zoom and ask.

I bought this thing nearly a year ago and never recorded one peep. Already I'm hopeful but the instructions mention AIFF recording mode. All I can see is WAV, which I avoid. Cannot find AIFF in the record format menu for the Zoom H5

I don’t believe AIF is an option. .WAV are uncompressed audio I always use. You can always change it in your software. I do think you can save as mp4 or mp3? Read your manual.
