Great content and very helpful video ! You've set an efficient process and results all make sense. But what stroke me most is hearing you read about Provence and Jean Giono. This region is the birthplace of my family, all my names are from Provence, Giono and my father/aunt/grandpa were born in neighbour places, we use to produce lavender, my family house is still standing tall, I've spent all my holidays down there, etc., etc. It's a first for me... so moving ! Thank you.

I decided on the H5 because 4 channels is ample for my purposes. The H6 is too wide with the extra xlr's on the bottom. I can't image a situation where I need 4 cables attached to a handheld. It looses all portability to me at that point. Also, the little bumper across the two XLR volume controls is a nice protective touch on the H5. As far as the tests, I liked the Xyh-5 and the Msh-6 the best. What I've found that works best with my unit is to mix mic types. Say a mono shotgun plugged into the input on the xyh-5 module mounted off camera and two small capsule condensers plugged into the xlr inputs. Not an expert suggestion just an option that sounds nice to me. Btw, back to the question of extra inputs, if I need more, I will buy a console recorder with 8,16, or 32 tracks.

I can't decide if I'm hearing mic/preamp noise or room noise in the background. It goes down substantially when you moved to the table top, so I'm guessing room. Can you comment on your impression on the noise floor when using the XYH-5?

How well would the Zoom H6 record noise when recording outdoors? I need to document/record noise that is produced by an HVAC (Air Conditioner) while it is running from about 8-10 ft away. I tried to record the noise with my phone, but the recording is not clear and the recording does not sound like when you hear the noise in person. Should a mic be used with this recorder to capture the noise? If yes, which mic is recommended? Perhaps a (directional) boom mic? I might try using the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule with Hairy Windscreen with it.

If there are several people probably the wider stereo image of the xyh6 would be more useful than a fixed 90 degree angle of the xyh5.

interesting, in my experience the XYH5 capsule requieres a lot of gain for capturing a voice about 30 cm away from the mics, at that level of gain the H5's preamp noise starts to become noticeable. On the video it seems that the XYH6 is more quieter, but I don't know if it because the mics are more sensitive and need less gain or because the preamps on the H6 are less noisy overall. Or maybe the mics themselves have a preamp built in the capsule, that would explain the gain knob being in the capsule instead of the recorder, in which case it appears the XYH6 capsule has quieter preamps or have more sensitive mics. Idk.

I am a newbie to the world of sound and would be grateful if you could answer a question: I record video on my Sony A7iii of streams and rivers and want to add high quality sound to the video. I can't figure out the equipment I need to accomplish this result. I could use a RODE Stereo VideoMic X which seems to be the simplest answer but many people seem to attach Zoom F6 devices to their camera along with mics and other equipment. What kind of configuration or equipment would you suggest buying if I want to add very high quality sound to my videos of streams and rivers ? Is the Zoom F6 or Zoom F5 the right tool for the job? Is there a way to feed the audio into the camera while it is recording so I can avoid adding it in post? Is there a better solution than the Zoom products or RODE Stereo VideoMic X?

I’m not an expert but even with just an F5 the main feature is the ability to plug extra mics in. It has a line out to plug into the camera and headphone out to monitor the sound so you don’t need to add the sound in post. So like If you wanted to use a boom mic or to shoot dialogue or something you could plug it into the zoom and feed it into the camera, or say in your case you wanted to get background ambiance you could set up mics facing away from the river or at an angle to capture a bigger stereo field (I mostly record music so I don’t know much about recording rivers other than it helps me sleep 😴 but it sounds like a relaxing hobby 😌) I guess it just depends on what you mean by “high quality” cuz that can involve a lot of things like equipment, technique, the subject and how you WANT it to sound vs how it actually does through any one given mic. The placement of the mic is very important and the most useful thing you can do is test and experiment. If it were me I’d wanna try putting extra mics like 10-20feet away from the zoom and see how that affects the sound and stereo picture and then see how close to the actual water you need to be to get the sound you want cuz it’ll probably be a different distance than the camera needs to be to get the picture you want. But I’m an audio nerd so you might be totally happy with the Rode, though without post processing you basically get what you get, though for something like a stream I would still recommend experimenting with placement of the mic, if you don’t like how it sounds on the camera buy a longer cable and move it around, try it low near the ground and up in the air and see what works for you.

it's a microphone test, you can't edit the audio files with a de-esser it would change the nature of the test.

Strangely I noticed no difference in quality when attached to the camera 🤔 Do I need my ears checked? The mic on the camera wasn't even that bad at all.
