Thanks. I'm very curious about this camera for some applications. Some of those settings look kinda strange, he he. Overall great camera quality though! Better than I thought. And the mic sounds great, doesn't it. Regarding not using in-camera digital zoom, I'm not sure you've tested it or if it's just your assumption... but some cameras, when they do digital zoom, they actually change the read area of the sensor, which is usually capable of much higher resolution. So an in-camera zoom a lot of times yields a better result than post zoom these days.
@AveMcree8 жыл бұрын
I just got the Zoom Q8 its a fair camera for video as long as you don't use it as a webcam. Using it as a webcam induces a lot of noise. Especially if you zoom in. Not really a fan of the whole "wide angle" aka action camera look. However, its a bit better from a standalone process (live gigs and plugging up mics into the Zoom). I don't think the encoders aren't up to par with my Logictech c920 (yes that old 1080p webcam). Especially if you use the outside settings you lose frames (and gain noise)and can't adjust them manually. It's also worth noting that all the Zoom camera are the same :(.. Heck there is a video someone with an iphone vs zoom video and the iphone is a billion times better with color..

Thanks for watching! I have not tested the digital vs post production zoom with this camera. I just assumed the old rules still applied to more modern cameras. When I get a chance, I will do that testing and post a video. I am very impressed with the mic, but I am also used to Zoom products all sounding good, so I'm not surprised. Hopefully I will get a chance to test out some of these modes in their intended situations. Take care.

Redeye Percussion1 second ago I agree that the usefulness of this camera is very dependent on the situation. The thing that I like the most is that you can place it where it will yield a good sound (up close) and still get a decent field of view. With the Q3HD, the lens was way too long for that. I also agree that an iPhone has a way better picture than the zoom stuff, but the sound quality is not there, and who wants to fill up their non-removable memory with music videos? Also, the mounting difficulties can be a challenge. Thanks for watching and take care!

Hello there! Thanks a lot for putting this video together. The Q2n looks and sounds great,definitely worth the money. The strange rainbow which appears is caused of the non use of the lens hood. In case you didn't purchase the accessory package for the Q2n get it and put the hood on it will eliminate the effect. Having said that I have the Q4n and Q8 and both recorders are equipped with the same lens like the Q2n,I always use the hood when filming. Thanks again for spending your time creating this video!
@RedeyePerc8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Can you direct me to where you found the lens hood? The accessory package I found doesn't seem to include one. I think it's very poor support on Zoom's part if something like that is not included but basically required for a good shot indoors. That's unlike what I've seen from them in the past. I've got another video posting in a day or so where it's really bad.

Redeye Percussion You are welcome! I just watched your latest video, great job again! I can't direct you as at the moment apart from the fact that is referred on their site it's not available yet but very soon hopefully. I am getting one Q2n soon and looking forward purchasing the Q2n accessory package too. The video quality in this video is quite good despite the appearance of the rainbow effect but please be patient until the accessory package is released. I believe if someone experiments a bit trying different lighting scene modes will be able to achieve really good quality video. Thanks again for all your effort putting these videos together.

I have just heard back from a tech at Zoom about this issue. His response was this: ----------------------------- I received a response from our engineers in Japan who confirmed this is normal operation for video cameras in certain lighting situations. If the fluorescent light is close or pointing toward the lens, this flare or something similar could occur. Our upcoming accessory pack for the Q2n includes a lens hood which will significantly prevent and reduce these types of effects. ---------------------------- So it looks like the lens hood is the way to go. I have asked if it will be available separately from an accessory package since it really should have been included for free with the camera like every other lens sold for SLR cameras.
@vasilischatzis5828 жыл бұрын
Redeye Percussion Hello there! Thanks a lot for informing me. The guys at zoom are great and their response sounds quite reasonable to me. Hopefully the accessory package will soon be available and will sort things out regarding the rainbow effect. You are right saying that the lens hood and the wind shield should at least be included with the Q2n but there is nothing we can do about it apart from waiting... We love zoom that's the thing! Thanks again,cheers!

Man I agree about this constant dumbing down of settings. Yes, some people don't yet know how to work the settings on things. Making a bunch of random scene/presets up usually 1. makes sure they never learn and 2. makes sure no one gets good results because you're essentially guessing when you make a selection. Ugh. Please manufacturers, leave one space for custom/manual settings!

Very interesting. It's nice to see a comparison of the lighting modes. I have the original Zoom Q2. I'm wondering what are the differences between the Q2 and the Q2n. I'm thinking it's the lighting modes. The Q2 sounds great. But, is very bad in low lighting. I have to use studio lighting in my garage. The Q2 also eats batteries pretty quick. I use either rechargeable batteries or the AC adapter. The AC adapter works great.

I'm glad you asked this. I have the original Q3, the Q2HD, and now the Q2n. I'm going to shoot a comparison video tonight that I should have posted in a few days. Just from memory, I know the lighting modes are new, the digtal zoom is new, and the lens is a fisheye instead of the very small one on the previous models. I'm not sure how much the audio has improved. Some, but probably not drastically. Thanks for watching!

To deal with Glare from lights or the sun, I'VE GOT THE ANSWER!!!! All you need is Velcro Strips with an Adhesive Backing. As the Q2n Lens sticks out about 1/8th of an inch, apply a narrow strip of fuzzy velcro around the lens. Then using a flexible plastic lid from a can of Coffee or whatever, cut it to the shape of the letter D, creating a shade similar to those on Traffic Lights. Applying prickly Velcro to the flat edge, press it to the fuzzy Velcro, and Bingo!

@neurocosm8 жыл бұрын
It seems generally nice as far as te video goes - audio is decent, too. Your voice is definitely clear and glossy. The drums flanged a bit, but I think that would be expected. What I don't understand is why Zoom did this with AA batteries for something that is almost 200 bucks. (likely more like 150 or so). I would imagine some sort of rechargeable lith-polymer battery would have made more sense. Maybe that is why it is less expensive? Nice demo, though! Thank you.
@RedeyePerc8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The AA setup is very convenient, but the battery life is truly awful and my only real complaint with this camera. I've been getting about 75 minutes per set before they show 0% life left. On my last gig, I used a standard mini USB cable to provide power and it worked great, but I had a cord trailing across the floor. I think the sound is good enough for what I (and likely the intended audience) will use it for the most.

Sounds really good. Were you using any additional mics or just the one on the Q2n? Your kick was coming through so nicely I thought you might have had an additional room mic on as well. Great video. I just ordered one of these and I can't wait to try it out.
@RedeyePerc7 жыл бұрын
I did not use any additional mics or any other sound recording. Everything is straight into the Q2n. When placed in front of a drumset, you should get a very good approximation of what that set sounds like in person. When you move the camera around, like to the back to get a better viewing angle, the bass drum will be noticeably softer. Good luck with the camera. I think it's well worth the price. Take care!

@RedeyePerc8 жыл бұрын
This will definitely handle that volume. My band plays through a PA with 800 watts per side (typically at around 80%), plus we have 2 guitar amps on stage and an entire bass rig and drumset. The last time I recorded, I sent the Q2n at 4/10 and the input level was very manageable. I think the max input it can handle is 120 dB. You can get a free dB level app for a smart phone and check out your volume first if you are concerned. Thanks for watching!

Sounds good, but that is probably down to the nice room and the carpet. The picture is not so great, especially the rainbow, or was that just a greasy lens? The various "modes" seem very unnecessary. The best thing is the picture and sound are from one device, so always in sync.

Thanks. I agree with your assessment. The picture isn't the best, but it's very convenient. The rainbow on the lens is a flare that is only fixable with their lens hood. I have another video entirely about that subject on my channel if you're interested.

Hi again Redeye Percussion. I just got my Q2n, but it comes without a micro SD card, so I was wondering which brand (Transcend, SanDisk, TOSHIBA) you recommend. Also, what size (GB) do you recommend. I'm basically using it to record my band live. Thanks.
@RedeyePerc7 жыл бұрын
I really hate to recommend a card that is not on their "official" list, because if it doesn't work I don't want you to be mad. I started off with a SanDisk 64GB card and it worked fine for about 3 months, then totally stopped. The camera said the card was too slow even though it's a class 10 card and works fine in a GoPro. I now have a 64GB Lexar that works fine (for now). The 64s give you 5+ hours which works for a normal bar length gig for my band. Good luck!

No - it's because Windows machines don't play nice with .mov files (which were developed by Apple). I downloaded a free player called VLC Media player (for Windows) and my .mov files play just fine, but it's a small pain in the ass. I think no one talks about uploading from the unit directly because it's not very common for someone to do that. For all of my videos, there is quite a bit of editing to do later, so I always use an editing program, re-save the videos, then upload from my computer. I think uploading from the camera directly would be a huge strain on the batteries, and since there is no wi-fi connections, you have to go through a computer anyway, so why not just save the file on that computer and upload from there? Thanks for watching! Sorry for the slow reply. To be honest, I did not look at the included software at all. I have a good workflow with my current programs, so I didn't get into it. I think they still include their "Handishare" program, which lets you preview and save all or parts of a video to your computer, but the editing is probably limited. You're probably better off with a "Light" version of a big program, like Adobe Premiere Elements (my choice). It's around $60-80. You can pan/zoom pretty easily with it. I also did not try the HDMI out, sorry. I'm strictly a memory card user, so that didn't come up. Take care!

Thanks for making this! Just had a question on the audio: I noticed a little "washiness" on that crash cymbal (sounds sort of like maybe some comb filtering going on). Does your cymbal have that kind of sound? Or is it an artifact going on with the mics? Just wondering if it sounds like that because of your cymbal type or because it's closest to the mics and something strange is going on when picked up by the Zoom. Any thoughts would help. Thanks again!

Thanks for watching! When I listen back, my crash sounds the same to me in the video and in person, so I don't believe the mics are distorting it at all. The only processing I did was to hard limit around -3dB to cut off any really loud hits and then normalize to 95% to bring up the total volume. Take care.

We don’t ever use them and the tech department probably doesn’t want to throw them in a closet somewhere.

Thanks for the input. I have talked about the accessory kit in a couple of other videos. The big problem I have is that it is $50 and I only really need the lens hood. That's a ridiculous price.

Thanks for watching! The good thing is that the Q2HD sounds almost exactly the same and it has a normal lens. Between the two, you should find a usable setup.
