Hi Steve, I may have cracked my problem of importing tracks to the R16 and getting the dreaded * problem. I checked the tracks that I'd created in Audacity and by coincidence the 4 tracks that wouldn't load/assign were panned left or right within Audacity i.e. 2 string tracks, one L and the other R and also 2 vocal tracks panned L and R. I centred all 4 tracks and then transferred them to the SD card. Hooray, each loaded and were asigned without any problem. I can now pan each of these tracks within the R16. This was not and issue I expected as I assumed that every track would retain it's pan position as part of the audio track and then assume that position within the R16. NOT SO!!! Hope you and your followers find this helpful. Kind regards, Ginger
@mandolinic4 жыл бұрын
The R16 only works with 44100Hz 16 bit or (ideally) 24 bit .WAV files. That means that with Audacity you have to ensure that the Project Rate (bottom left corner of window) is set to 44100, and each track is set to 44100. Like you, I find that working only with mono tracks gives the least amount of hassle. If you rename each track to its instrument, then you can use File > Export Multiple, select 24-bit Microsoft Wave, and it will export all non-muted tracks as separate mono files, using the track name as the file name (with .wav added). I find it highly advantageous use a more description file name for each track, rather than the bland MONO-001.WAV that the R16 gives by default.

Well John.... I started doing a video for you today on Audacity but after about 4 hours into it, I came to the conclusion that I really wouldn't recommend it to someone that's new to the world of recording. There were latency issues and the recorded guitar sounded wobbly. If any newbie encountered that it would just frustrate them and turn them off to recording. For certain simple things and for it being a free download, I think it's useful. For instance, if you wanted to slow a song down but wanted to maintain the original key, or if you had a track that sounded flat and wanted to EQ the whole thing, or maybe you finished a song but wanted to cut out the intro... for stuff like that I think it's useful and simple to use. But I'd pass on using it for recording. That's why I have the R16, lol! For using Audacity or Pro Tools or anything computer based, there's a big learning curve, not to mention that you need your computer, software, and interface to play nice with each other.

Hi Steve, Oiler’s formatted the SD card and created a single new project. Then copied the 8 tracks into the Audio folder so there shouldn’t be any conflict with duplicate names. When tracks 5,6,7,8 came up with the asterisk I renamed them and no change to the asterisk appearing only on the same tracks - hope that helps.

Hi Steve. Thanks for all the helpful videos. As I was bouncing, I was ajusting the fader level on the track I was bouncing from, but this hasn't been carried over to the new track. Also, I can't reduced the fader level on the new track??? Any idea?
@stevekonbass2 жыл бұрын
Hmm... you should be able to work that fader while you bounce and you should be able to change the level of the bounced track. Mute the tracks that you bounced from and then work the fader of the new track and see if the fader works. Make sure you're on the right bank of tracks when you work the fader. For example you might be working the fader of track 1 but the 9-16 button is lit so you are actually working track 9. If it's not something simple like that. Try swapping the final bounced track to another one. For example if it's on track 4 swap it to 7 and see what happens.

Steve, at 8:27 you share the two tracks by using drop box. Can you email it to someone instead of using drop box? I am not familiar with drop box yet.
@stevekonbass2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the thing is, they have to be WAV files to import into the R16. Most times, WAV files won't go through email because they're so big. I gather there's a way around that by emailing an MP3 of the file and then having the person on the other end converting it to a WAV to import. Drop Box is easy though if you want to try it. There's no cost if I remember correctly. Here's a link: www.dropbox.com/basic

Can you assign a stereo track to two stereo linked tracks on the r16, in order to use the r16 to master a stereo track? Thanks so much for these great videos!
@stevekonbass Жыл бұрын
If I'm following your question right, yes, there are ways to do it.
@alanduncan1980 Жыл бұрын
@@stevekonbass Thanks for the info. So, basically, I've drums on tracks 1 to 8, and everything else on tracks 9 to 16. I have already used the 8 band EQ to compress the drums on tracks 1 to 8, so, since I can only use one mastering effect, which in this case is just drum compression, I'm still left with a track that's just mixed, and not really mastered, so, I want to mix the stereo track down, then load it back into the r16 and assign it to stereo linked tracks, as it's a stereo track, then I can use the Mastering effects again to the final mix. I appreciate the videos. Your music is excellent too.
@stevekonbass Жыл бұрын
What you can do is "record" the drums with the 1-8 insert effect on. Go to insert effect, go to the 1-8 comp eq, choose the one you want, click input source, and then choose the 1-8 "inputs" (not tracks). Then your drums are recorded with the effect on. Then you can record the rest of the instruments on tracks 9-16 and then choose an overall mastering effect at the end.

@@stevekonbass I never even thought of that. That's a great tip. I'm going to try that next time I'm tracking drums. It's amazing what you can do with the r16, if you really push it to the limit. @stevekonbass Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it really is a great unit. Too bad they discontinued it. I've been experimenting with live drums myself. You can even get a good live recording using the built in condenser mics. There are even some stereo effects for drums that are pretty cool. One thing I've found with the R16 is that even after mastering with the unit, the master comes out a little flat and could use additional mastering. I usually run it through a Sony video editing program of all things that has pretty good audio editing as well. A little adjustment to the EQ and some compression through that program usually gives me the crisp and round sound I like.

Not quite sure if I'm following your question. If you're talking about mixing down the song to a stereo track, yes the send/return effects should be there. Make sure they are turned up on each track to where you want them. So, let's say you have lead vocals on track 1 and you click the Send/Return button and choose Small Hall for your reverb. Now you have to set the level on that vocal track. To do that, you click the Pan/EQ button and arrow down to reverb and turn the level of reverb up. When you master the song and mix down, all the effects you hear should be on the mix down version.

I'll give you a video to watch at the end, but here it is in a nutshell... we'll just use 2 tracks as an example... set the fader of where you want the volume of the karaoke track and then set the volume of where you want the mic/vocal track. Make sure they are both in play mode (lit up green). Add you're reverb and set your EQ how you like for each track. Raise the master fader (the red one) so the LED lights up but doesn't go into the red. Put the button above the red fader into record mode (red). Rewind the song to the beginning, press record, and then play. When the song is done press stop. The master is now saved on the SD card. When you put the SD card in your computer look for the file that says MAST000 or MAST001, something like that, and that will be the recording you just did with the effects. Now to explain a little deeper, there's wet and dry recording. Wet means you recorded your guitar or vocals with the effect. So that recorded guitar or vocals will have the effects printed on the SD card. If you pop your SD card in the computer, you'll see them as MONO000, MONO001, etc. and the effects will be there. This video might help you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHTXqmWZZaqLl6c

The asterisk means there's a file of the same name in the project. You can't have a file with the same name used twice in the project. Hey Alan- Yeah you can do that. I made myself some track sheets and jot down where the fader level is at for each track. This way if I'm making adjustments when I mix down I know where the levels should be when I do another mix. If you press pan/eq and arrow down you can see the fader levels of each track.

@@stevekonbass Thanx for replying..one other simple? thing can you delete unwanted recordings/takes within the R16?
@stevekonbass4 жыл бұрын
Yes. If you do a take and you don't like it press "undo" right after the take. You can delete full songs by pressing the project button, then scroll to edit, then scroll to delete. Tracks you can delete by pressing the project button, then scroll to file, choose track, then scroll to edit, then scroll to delete.

Is there a way to use a saved effect across multiple projects? I have a distortion I created AND saved on a project, but when I go to another project, that effect is gone
@stevekonbass3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. I never tried it, but next time I fire it up I'll look into it.
@chuckhughes30083 жыл бұрын
@@stevekonbass I actually figured it out. Where the save, edit and all those options, there is an import option, and it imports all saved patches from whatever project you select

Hi Steve Do the tracks imported from a laptop to an R 16 have to be Wav files? What if they’re mp3 ?
@stevekonbass3 жыл бұрын
The Zoom uses WAV. If memory serves me correct, I believe I tried importing an mp3 once and it didn't work. If the files you want to import are mp3, try putting them in a program like Audacity, and then save them as a WAV.

Can you import wav tracks from the PC daw into the zoom? I'd like to import 10 instrument wav tracks, and then record the vocals in the r16. Is that possible? Or the r16 would not recognize the PC tracks? Can I reassign them into the project?
@stevekonbass2 жыл бұрын
As long as they're wav files you're good. If you watch this video from the :45 mark you'll see me do the whole process.

@@stevekonbass But a stereo track takes 2 mono tracks... I am considering the R24 because of that

Hi steve. I have a question, is it possible to add multiple effects on clean guitar track, like what you did you added effects and master, but is it possible if i add mulitple edfects, for example reverb, compressor, delay an: master effects like maximizer in 1 guitar track?
@stevekonbass3 жыл бұрын
Yes. You just have to know the ins and outs of the machine. For example, every track has reverb and you can combine that with a delay, or chorus, etc. Those are your send/return effects. If you explore the send/return section you'll see there are all different combos you can choose. Then, if you press the pan/eq button and then use the down or up arrow buttons you'll see Reverb and Chorus sections where you can adjust the amount of reverb or chorus on each track. Now recording a guitar clean and then changing to a distorted model, like the 5150, you'd use the insert effects button and put the 5150 on that clean guitar track. You can also go into the 5150 edit section and tweak all sorts of things there. Now I'll give you an example of what confuses people... first they'll record a guitar clean and then later on go to the insert effects section and change it to distorted. So now the guitar is distorted and they're happy. Then they decide to add a mastering effect to the recording so they go to the insert effects and add a mastering effect to the recording but when they do that now the distorted guitar is gone and back to clean. Now here's the thing, you can record with an insert effect as much as you want, but to add it after the fact you can only do one at a time. That's where the bounce trick comes in. I explain that at the 16:17 point of this video.

Just a question. When I import just one track like in the video, can I record to the other tracks of the Zoom R16, using the file imported like a base/backing track on which I put other instruments? For example, the file imported on a track on the SD is a drum and I want record a mine Percussion set to the other available tracks... Is it possible? Thank you.

I m not sure I understand why we need the bounce function
@stevekonbass3 жыл бұрын
Okay... bounce is useful to combine 2 or more tracks to 1 track, but the way I used bounce in this particular video, I used it so I could use the insert effect feature more than once. Now, you can use the insert effects and record "WET" as much as you want (meaning the effects will be recorded). But, if you wanted to record 3 guitars "DRY" and then add insert effects afterward, you'd have to do it like I did it in this video with the bounce trick.
@LFB963 жыл бұрын
okay, so say, If I record a clean guitar with a phlanger effect on track 1 and a guitar with distortion on track 2, I could get one guitar with both effects .ie, phlanger and distortion on only one track if I used bounce ? am I getting this right ?
@stevekonbass3 жыл бұрын
I think the whole insert effect/bounce thing is confusing you so forget about the whole insert effect/bounce thing for a minute because you'll only have to worry about that if you record multiple tracks DRY and then want to add amp models/effects after the fact. If you want to record a distorted guitar with flanger just choose a distorted amp model and then go to the edit section to add flanger. Then you can record that guitar with distortion and flanger. Then, if you want to record your next track with a clean guitar with flanger, just choose a clean amp model, go to the edit section, and add the flanger. Check out the first video I did where I explain using that insert effect button in it's simplest form: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJCXZYZta7SDj7M

Ok not sure if anyone else has found this, but I nearly had a heart attack... It seems (I'm hoping) when you put SD card into laptop, DO NOT change the original file names on the SD card. I have re inserted SD card into R16 and it can't detect the ones the names have changed. I'm hoping tomorrow when I change the names back to PG001 etc, that they can be read again ☹️
@stevekonbass17 күн бұрын
It's there, you just have to assign it now. So, let's say the original track was named mono2 and you named it bass guitar. You put the card into the Zoom and it seems gone. It's there. You just have to assign it. Hit the project button, arrow over to file, hit enter, arrow over to an empty track, use the jog wheel to find bass guitar and assign it to that track.
