Ben, I'm hunting for way to replace how I've been recording side-by-side videos of me (teacher) and just one private student via Ecamm Call Recorder (Mac). Can Zoom achieve that? Call Recorder works much better than Skype, both sides can be full screen; Skype radically trims off the left and right sides of each video feed. We're both playing pedal steel guitars (similar to pianos in form), so that trimming is not ideal. Thanks!

Hi, I want to make a series of recordings/ videos with PowerPoint involved. I want a split screen with the slide on the left and myself on the right. I need the ability to go through a series of slides during recording; and an ability to run a cursor to diminish/ minimise slide size to various degrees at will would also be necessary (with self occupying more screen proportionately). Of course, both sides of the slide would need to feature on the video (I am new to Zoom and do not know whether it records like screenshots or picks out parts of the screen).I would be most grateful for your answer.

Hi Mike - my What Gets Recorded in Zoom video should help you out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZnNi42JiK2Zhck. However note that you can't actually record in a 50/50 side by side split, it will record the shared screen large with you in a thumbnail in the corner. The exception is if you have a Pro account and do cloud recording, then there is an option to record speaker and shared screen views to separate video files, which you could then combine any way you want in a third party video editor.

Great video! Is there a way to control how your WEBINAR participants view a screen with shared content? I.e., can I as host Hide Non-Video Participants for my attendees, or is it just for myself/how I'm viewing? I am hosing a webinar where we have Panelists who will be presenting content, and a group of Reviewers who will be asking questions, but when the Panelists are sharing and presenting, we don't want the non-video (names only) boxes to be cluttering up the view for our attendees. Very informative, but I still have a question: As a guest speaker (with non-host or co-host status), my goal is to ensure my shared screen is equal in size to my image on all meeting attendee's screens, i.e., I'm trying to avoid, as the presenter, being confined to a small box off to the side of a meeting attendee's screen. What must the host of the meeting do to arrange for that view to occur for all on the call? What must I do other than share my screen to support that outcome?
@BenFinio
@BenFinio 2 жыл бұрын
Hi - this video is a little outdated - the best thing to do is have the host spotlight you. In general individual meeting participants retain a lot of control over their own view, including the ability to pin others (who aren't necessarily the speaker), and to swap whether the shared screen or the speaker's camera view is larger. But if the host spotlights you it will at least remove their ability to pin somebody else. A more dramatic option is "focus mode" which would prevent participants from seeing each other at all - I have a newer video about that if you check my channel.

Hi Lana - I made this video before Zoom released the multi-pin and multi-spotlight features, which I have a video about here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIusn2x3rbiFqLc. I'm searching for a way to use side by side as the host. I realize this is not possible as that function is only available for participants. The reason for wanting this is that I do not wish to use full screen mode and when sharing lesson material via screenshare, the participants windows along the top are too small. I don't have enough participants to test this but according to a screen shot from zoom, it appears to be a better option than the windows along the top. Also, being allowed to adjust the shared screen is a plus as students using smartphones can increase the shared content when needed. Would it be possible to assign a participant to share the study guides and then adjust them as needed? How will this appear on the host's end? I will have a large screen and so the size will be no problem. But for the students, it might allow their windows to be made larger and then the shared screen to be larger, according to need. Any ideas on this?

@BenFinio
@BenFinio 4 жыл бұрын
Hi - unfortunately no, you can't really control the relative size of the thumbnail and shared screen portions when recording. If you haven't seen them, I do have videos about what gets recorded with single and dual monitors in Zoom: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZnNi42JiK2Zhck kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5uodZWArK2YfK8. The super roundabout way to make a custom video with the sizes you want would be to use cloud recording (requires a pro account) to record the shared screen and video views to separate video files, then use a third-party video editing program to combine them in the size you want. However, if you are just recording a video to use as a tutorial and not hosting a live meeting to begin with - do you need to use Zoom? There are various other screen recording + video editing options out there that may get you want you want. OBS Studio is a popular free screen recorder (lots of tutorials for it on KZbin) but it is not a video editor. Camtasia is a screen recorder + video editor that lets you drag and resize the recorded screen + webcam views to whatever you want, but it's not free. I have a tutorial about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmTLn2mqob-Ff6M

This is a question I submitted to zoom. Perhaps you can answere it.. I’m still searching for a way to have students’ windows in gallery view appear larger while screen sharing. Side by side mode allows participants to adjust the shared content area, thus increasing the size of the students’ videos or the shared content as needed. If I assign a participant the task of sharing the content (which I will supply to him). When he adjusts the size of the two areas, will other participants be able to adjust these two areas on their screens? Some using smartphones may need the text in shared content to be larger and when discussing the study material, the speaker (in gallery view) will have a larger window. Will this work? Or alternatively, can I be given control of the participants screen who is sharing and make these adjustments myself as host?

Each participant can adjust their own side by side view scaling independently. But per my reply to your other comment, if you want to see everyone bigger in gallery view you might want to consider getting a second monitor. I have a video covering dual monitor mode.

@@BenFinio Thanks. That takes the control away from me, which is cool if the students follow directions. Also, I have three monitors connected but what I am searching for is a method that will make the speaker larger than the other windows in gallery view. Ideally, two small windows on on side. Teacher in one and the student being called on to speak in the other. On the other side a screen share of the material being studied. Ideal for language class. Other students can see the student speaking in a reasonably sized window and they will not be visible until the screen share study material is removed. Streamgeeks had a video that I liked using two computers but alas it seems that the layout did not apply to the zoom class view. So, still seeking...

If I am set up as a co-host and the Host is sharing their screen, can I do side by side on my laptop so that I can see a little of what is shared but still see a large number of people who are signing in. Several of us are trying to rename participants who dial in so that we know who they are, but if the host shares her screen then we can only see 4 people and we are trying to do a large group of 60 or 70 people. So those of us who are co hosts don't need to see the shared powerpoint as much as we need to see people as they check in.

Hi Joan - yes - see the video around 0:45 - there is a slider that you can drag left and right to resize the slides. In your case you would just want to drag it all the way to the left, to minimize the slides and make the gallery view as big as possible. There is also an option in Zoom settings to "show up to 49 people in gallery view" which will show more people on the screen at once. Although with that many participants, it might just be easier to ask people to rename themselves? (I realize that may not be feasible with younger students)

@BenFinio 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica - you can do this if you have two monitors. Go into your Zoom settings -> General and check the "Use dual monitors" checkbox (you must do this before the meeting starts). Then you can share the content of one monitor and have Gallery view open on the other monitor. If you only have one monitor, then you can resize the window you want to share so it doesn't take up your whole screen (e.g. your web browser when doing Google slides). When you share your screen, make sure you ONLY select that program, not "Screen 1" which will show everything on the entire monitor. That will give you some room on the rest of your screen for Zoom - but I believe it will just show a tiny floating box with a few thumbnails in it, it will not display the complete gallery view if you have a lot of participants.

I’m looking at running my drama classes on zoom, and want to record two people as if they are having a video call with each other. I need to be there to direct them, but don’t want to be seen on the recording. Hope that makes sense!

Hi - yes, I believe you can do this by hiding your own video. However, I'd definitely recommend doing a test recording first. You can do this by logging in on multiple computers (that's how I make these videos), or if you don't have enough, ask some family/friends to join.

@@BenFinio Hi Ben! Thanks for the info! I think what Ashley is asking is the same questions I have. I go to the settings and check the box that says side by side, but I still do not have that option. When I log in to webinars for my district, I see the presenter AND their screen side by side automatically (I do not click on the viewing at the top), but when my students see me, they just see the screen and me blocking parts of the screen with my video. How can I change it so that every time I present, they see me side by side the way I see the webinars?

@@andreaherrera6177 all of my tutorials are for Zoom *Meetings*. Webinars have a slightly different interface and unfortunately I'm not familiar with them. In meetings (assuming that's what you're using with your students), I don't think you can "force" your students into side by side view or set that as the default for them. Every participant retains individual control over their view.

Hi Alondio - not sure what you mean by "add your presentation" - you mean you want to share your screen? If so, that won't work with the "side by side" mode I've described here if YOU are the one sharing your screen. But if one of the other participants is sharing their screen, then yes you can do it on your screen. To switch out participants you would have to un-hide someone's video and then hide the person you no longer want to see. Hi - you can only be in side by side mode when someone ELSE is sharing their screen, but even then (for example, if you had a co-host record) I believe Zoom will record the shared content large and the camera via in a small thumbnail. The exception would be if you are doing cloud recording and you have the option selected to record separate video files for speaker, gallery, and shared screen views. Then you would need to use third-party video editing software to combine them into a side-by-side view.

@BenFinio

Hi Janis - this depends on where your webcam is. If you're using a laptop the webcam is usually centered just above the screen. If you're using a separate USB webcam, you can put it wherever you want. Either way you want to make sure you're looking directly into the webcam, and not the person on your screen - which can make it seem as if you're looking down or to the side.

Joe - the closest you can get to this is if you have two monitors and check the "Use dual monitors" option in your Zoom settings. That will let you share one screen and still have a Zoom window open (i.e. gallery view) on the other monitor, so you can still see everyone. Otherwise, Zoom doesn't give a "side by side" option when you're sharing your own screen.
