You know, I'm jealous of southern plantation owners too. They had slaves to do everything for them. They even genuinely believed their slaves were happy....and you could find some who said they were. But it wasn't right. And anyone who looks deeply into their own conscience knows it isn't. "They're well cared for"??? These are independent animals that shouldn't be receiving "care" from humans. They should be living free.

plus, as one KZbinr who goes by the name Kamp Kenan once said, the more humans are brought in to this world, the more struggle it will be to preserve the natural wild habitats for these animals... and if things keep up, there will be very little places for certain species to live, some may even die off completely because of it! good zoos/facilities/farms with good care takers like you and Kamp Kenan are the hope for some threatened species to live on for future generations to see

I cannot agree more! There are many zoos that break my heart, but there are just as many that are truly helping the animals. I lived at an animal rescue center in Costa Rica as a volunteer and those animals were happy, healthy, and safe there.

Zoos can be a great way for people who do not have the funds or the desire to leave the country to see exotic animals they normally would never be able to see. Furthermore, there's always some kid who goes to the zoo with their parents and sees how happy the keepers are to be there. Then the kid gets inspired and thinks; "Wow! I wanna be a zookeeper when I grow up!". It's that power of inspiration that makes zoos invaluable and irreplaceable.

Zoos are amazing not only are they great to help rehabilitate, help breed extinct animals back to population but it's great for children still to get to see an learn about wildlife as up close as possible that it can get ! I love an am very proud of what u folks do !

İt's not just your opinion, James. My friend has 2 Bengal Tigers that he rescued as kittens & they've grown up in his house - they would never survive in the wild, yet he cops so much flak for having them despite the expert care he provides for them. As he explains far more eloquently than I can, it won't be long before the only way anyone will ever get to see such magnificent exotic animals will be in captivity. The ONLY upsides for them in the wild would be freedom of choice and increase of space. Otherwise, they have everything they need, including safety. I have just heard in a radio, that Budapest (Hungary) Wild Park invites visitors today (it's Saturday morning 9 am here in Central Europe). And the city where I live (Kosice, Slovakia) has the largest ZOO in our country and the Central Europe. Of course there's a need for these facilities and I am sure that the staff takes great care of animals, because yes, these facilities have also endangered species. Absolutely needed. That is why I’ll never be able to express how thankful I am that places like your’s exist to preserve species, protect animals that have no chance of surviving otherwise, and to educate people about wild life since humans are often the cause of their decline. Captivity can remove an animal's ability to live in the wild by themselves too. Particularly, if they've never been in the wild. Could you imagine Thanos and how he'd be possibly trying to go up to humans for an ear scratch?! 😳 I get what you're saying. I was told those same things as a kid when I asked why they couldn't be released. The ones under your care are especially lucky. So... thanks for the time taken to share their lives and yours. 😁

Animals in wild is a Hugh life or death struggle for them. It’s constantly a struggle to find food. They are much better off where they are now in this case captivity is a healthy and longer life for them under this kind of care.

Zoos and similar facilities that prioritize the wellbeing of the animals over entertainment are fine to me. Your animals look happy and healthy, that says it all! Also, many zoos do important work with endangered species and special needs individuals. Preservation and education are also very important. So if a facility takes really good care of the animals and help preserve species, and/or educate people, they are a-okay.

I have questioned the main issues about keeping animals in captivity. Our interest in seeing, studying animals in captivity must not exceed the animals interest to freedom and self-determination. However, keeping and preserving the gene pool to at risk species is essential. In a warming world the purposes of zoos and refuges are more critical than any time in our lifetime. In the midst of these times I believe it is the best we can do because we will all need to rely on special interventions for the animals and our own species.

I recently read the book "The Rise of Wolf 8" by Rick McIntyre, about the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park in 1995. Those wolf packs had to be guarded from hunters and haters. Some where shot anyway. So sad, but we need sanctuaries like yours to keep wolves safe.

While I disagree with the captivity of wildlife, I respect and understand the need for such facilities. It's one of those things that suck, but have to exist now that it does. There are too many endangered animals that could legitimately die off without captivity and there are so many outside factors, such as domestication, disease, and being introduced to a habitat that is foreign even to its ancestors. Keep doing what you're doing, brother, with all the blessings.

Appreciate you and your hard work, places like yours are often the only reason we still have many species to begin with. Average folks don't realize how dangerous the wild really is, and how little habitat is actually available for certain species... lol it's not all freedom and fun to day the least. I'm so damn sick of people jumping to the conclusion that if an animal is in captivity, it's automatically a prison with no redeemable qualities, even though that zoo is clearly a healthy environment if they just scan their eyeballs over it for a change. Here's what i think: zoos are needed and important for conservation and education, but only SOME animals should be kept int them. Zoos are only able to provide so much in terms of mental and physical enrichment, and species with higher intelligence, complex behavior, large territories and poorly known needs shouldn't be in captivity. Gorillas, orcas, elephants, pandas and lions are just a few examples of animals better left on t.v and in the wild than in manmade enclosures.

However you can have captive breeding programs separate from zoos where the animals have more space, habitats closer to what they'd have in the wild and no crowds of people bothering them all day.

Zoos educate the public. It’s hard to care for an animal you have never seen but animals that you have hold a more special place in your heart. Get the public involved and educate the public and people support the preservation of these animals in the zoo and even more so for the animals left in the wild. Species in the wild have hardships and have to scrap out a daily survival. It’s our task as humans to give them land to do so and prevent poaching. It’s our job as humans to prevent spoiling their environment. We were tasked to care for animals from the very beginning.

I look at zoos as a place for people to learn about animals and to be able to see ones they normally wouldn't be able to see like zebras or lions. They're also a place for safety. Many animals could become extinct if it weren't for zoos, because of poaching

I am torn when it comes to zoos! Here in Denver all water for the animals to swim in is recycled wastewater! If I’m a polar bear and I ever comprehend that, I’m going to leave a trail of body parts from one end of the zoo to the other!

I lived in the wilds of Alaska. Wolves most be the most terrifying predators on earth, the most intelligent, ruthless, aggressive, formidable. No animal enjoys the hunt and the kill like a wolf- if you look up the words "wild" and "bloodthirsty" in the dictionary, there should be a picture of a wolf pack. Also, "viscous", "determined", "temperamental". They are very loyal to each other, but also, very brutal to each other. I have seen wolves exhibit human like grief over losing one. And human like, systematic, problem solving intelligence and communication. Although these wolves will (hopefully) be deprived the pleasure of ripping other animals throats out, life in the wild is brutal and harsh, these wolves are happier. And I think the zoo is incredibly valuable for studying these animals. They are a lot smarter than people realize. But I think you are suicidal. It is to your credit you have gone this long without a fight, but it is just a matter of time before you are injured again, or killed. They don't need a reason. They don't always give warning. Because that is their nature, even within the pack, and you are not equipped to deal with them like a wolf. Is it necessary to get this close to well care for them?
