*Correction, despite several sources giving the National Zoo the title, the Dickerson Park Zoo was the first to succeed at breeding an Asian Elephant with AI*

What a learning curve for the female elephant, impregnated forcefully without even knowing it, I hope they all cared for their babies and the other females took on their Aunty roles. How long do they generally stay with their mother and the other females /adopted family . Lastly what does the Smithsonian zoo do for Asian elephant conservation in their natural homeland?

It’s sad that the day after this video came out one of the females sadly was euthanized (or at least I think so) EDIT: now that’s two elephants euthanized this year. RIP shanthi, her music will play in our hearts forever.

I’ve actually been to the old Elephant House back before it was renovated into its modern form. To call it “Outdated” is an understatement, the thing looked like a prison. Only the Giraffes had a somewhat decent exhibit, the rest were all incredibly bad. If you wanna know what happened to other animals in the Elephant House, most of the Giraffes and all of the Capybaras were all relocated to much better enclosures at the Baltimore Zoo between 2006 and 2009, one of the Giraffes was relocated to ZooTampa in 2006, one of the Pygmy Hippos died of poisoning in 2003 and the other was relocated to another zoo around 2008/2009, the Hippo was relocated the Milwaukee County Zoo in 2009, and the Rhino was relocated to another zoo and/or died long before my first visit, they’ve been gone for at least 2 decades. Also, fun fact: If you go down that trail around the eastern side of the Elephant House that loops down to the bird house and a lower viewing of the Elephant Yard, you can spot what appears to be a dried-up concrete pool that nature is beginning the overtake. This is actually the remains of the old hippo enclosure’s outdoor section’s pool.

As a zookeeper in this area for nearly 23 years, only one piece of your information is correct. And I drove the capys to their new home which was not Baltimore. I visited our rhinos at their next home, the nile hippo at his, the giraffe at his.

You should visit Zoo Atlanta. Their elephant habitat is absolutely incredible since they expanded it in 2019. I also recommend Zoo Tampa. Their habitats aren’t as updated as other zoos, but they are a zoo with a lot of unique animals that is often overlooked.
@DCT-tt8ib4 жыл бұрын
Zoo Atlanta has one of the best Reptile Houses in America, and ZooTampa has a really good Manatee enclosure.
@lc68964 жыл бұрын
DCT0473 I totally agree on that. I also love the Asia exhibit in Zoo Atlanta that mentions the welfare issues of the animals in Asia, like the wet markets, the pet trade, and the bear bile farms. And Zoo Tampa does a great job of explaining why some of the animals may pace around their enclosure or do repetitive behaviors. I think that just shows the level of care these zoos have not just for conservation, but for animal welfare worldwide.

Going by the Elephant complex’s location, he’ll likely do American Trail or the Ceetah Conservation Station next (He won’t do the Bird House for a while, it’s been under renovation for a few years and won’t be open until 2021),
@thegeck58314 жыл бұрын

Innovated but do you still like Houston more?
@ZooTours4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, it's more lively with elephants of all ages, the keepers keep them busy throughout most of the day, both of their exhibits are large, and they emphasised swimming as part of their design. DC gets the upper hand on indoor space, but Houston's elephants stay out year around.
