In this tepid, flaccid, impotent, unimaginative, uncreative, unadventurous, fearful and overly cautious age of ours, what an invaluable life mentor Zorba has been for me and presumably many others, as well! "May God sanctify his remains!"
@oliverwilliamsonjr.17305 жыл бұрын
I could not have said it better myself. About our sad age, I would just add "spiritually lobotomized".

If you were truly filled with Zorba's spirit all those negative observations wouldn't matter. The dispirited list of yours conveniently ignore their opposites, all of which DO exist, now and here, in our age.

I played this old (to me, as a teen) album from my father's archives every night in the basement when everyone had gone to bed, & leaped for hours making up Greek dances...so i too hear the spoken part with each tune. "They say that age keeels a man, that he hears death coming & says open the door, come EEN! THAT is a PACK of lies! I have ee-nough fire in me to...to devour the world!"

@peterkelnerxd7009 I agree that the book 📖 is indeed a MASTERPIECE. But why would you call the movie (from 1964 staring Anthony Quinn) “cheap”? Rarely, if ever, do movie versions of novels replicate the novel in every aspect. There must always be some compromise for obvious reasons. With that said, the movie was extremely touching and memorable. And I will cherish it from the time I first saw it in the theater back in 1964…when I was only 13.

La música de esta película es apasionante, maravillosa. Theodorakis dio vida a una película por sí misma bellísima. Y Alan Bates y Anthony Quin personifican y encarnan a dos personajes arquetípicos. Por algo ganaron los premios que ganaron

I love Greece and the Greek people from my years living there, so I too, have a connection to this music. Zorba The Greek was a very enjoyable film too, but people never seem to mention a major scene in the film that shows the insanity of religion and the terrible offenses "believers" will commit in its name. I'm talking of course about the killing of the widow. People need to set aside stone age beliefs that are man-made, don't hold up under historical scrutiny, and are immoral to their very core.
@Cortu012 жыл бұрын
Recall that the village supports the act out of jealousy, and the perpetrator acts in revenge of his son's death. Religion is neither a trigger nor a justification for the characters in the scene. That aside, Orthodox Christianity is as integral to modern Greek culture as the Olympians were to Ancient Greece. As imperfect as Religion might be, its erosion as a moral basis has so far paved the way to Nihilism. One must tread carefully.

And I forgot to mention this: "Eleni", the book by Nicholas Gage (aka Nikola Gatzoyannis). Do not read it if you do not want your dreams to be haunted by this true-to-life biography of a woman whose sole aim was to protect her children; it has stayed with me for nightmares uncounted. But if you are in search of a searing, real-life story, then plunge in--and don't say I ddin't warn you. Thank you again, Epikopos.
