One thing I believe ZorinOS has (haven't tried it myself yet) that hasn't been mentioned and fits right into the kind of "help for beginners" mentioned at the end, is that if you do something Linux-dumb like try to open a Windows executable, it'll offer a helpful pop-up basically telling you what you're supposed to do, and in some cases even tell you what app you could get from their repository to do what you're trying to do. It probably doesn't cover every use-case, but it's a great touch for beginners coming from Windows.

@@JyyceKrato Doesn't matter, same case. It's not piracy. Hell, Zorin is just another Linux Distro, so who cares if you are pirating code that was originally open-source. AMD used to have Phenom X3 processors that were originally quad-core Phenom X4s with one core that just didn't quite meet the spec and being disabled, leaving the chip to be tri-core. 3 cores, 3 threads. I think on some motherboards you could unlock the 4th core and, if it's stable, in effect get a free upgrade to a Phenom X4.

I figure the main incentive to buy the pro edition is to donate to the developers, and in return you get some quality of life features. Plus the option for a minimal install is still present if you want less packages. Also, I think the broken dark theme on calc could have been fixed by restarting it. Not sure about gnome, but when I switch themes in XFCE, some programs will look broken until they're restarted.

more “just works” distros should use the Anaconda installer rather than Unity when installing. perhaps it is just because I started the world of Linux on Fedora, but I find the Anaconda installer on Fedora much easier to use, especially when it comes to dual booting. I give Zorin props for one thing: at least most of the bloatware isn’t default. If you don’t pay for pro, you don’t get the bloatware.

To that end I think it's honestly a pretty good deal, especially for new users. I still suggest you Mx Linux for Antix for that I tried zorin lite on my laptop from 2009 but it had an issue with my graphics card (gt220m) and resolution stuck at 640*480 or something like that. I highly recommend MX Linux. It's my everyday distro.

I've used the core version for years from a persistent USB drive installation as a way to handle systems that won't boot and retrieve data etc. Also handy for traveling with only my phone and using hotel computers. I just bought a Lenovo laptop with detachable touch screen and purchased the Pro version of Zorin because I thought they were saying it would make the OS look like the Mac which I really like. Seems like it doesn't do more than make an attempt at making the desktop look Mac-ish. But having created a live/installer that works on my MacBook Air I find it doesn't want to install on the Lenovo IdeaPad D330, so having paid for Pro I will hopefully get help with the install. ON the default it goes to a blank screen and with the NVIDIA drivers option it hangs at a point where it says "Starting power management". So far I have sent them photos of the screens and details of the problem but they have not gotten back to me (it's the weekend). I like Zorin so assuming it will work on the Lenovo I'm happy and can't wait to get rid of the Windows 10 that came on the Lenovo.

A few months ago came over to Linux as the main daily driver. In my professional life in IT I go back to the first Linux for PCs and Win 3. As an intro to Zorin your vid is ok but you need to use Zorin foe a few months to fully appreciate the OS. You will not be disappointed I’ll go as far as saying it will be the number one go to Linux distro overtaking Mint in couple of years. BTW don’t forget Linux tinkers are only 1 percent of computer users. The rest of the world just won’t an OS that works well and Zorin IMO is that.

But there is side that fact he reviews it results in new buyers to distribution, example I have used Linux for +10years and I have newer heard about this distro. Plus he could have skipped distro altogether, and they would not get this publicity. Also even if you pirate it, I would believe if user likes distro, they have high change to donate/pay in long run. So I would say results is more and less neutral.

I don't think Zorin is appealing only for old windows users... Well, okay, they want to be the new entrance distro, but I actually like the system even being absolutely not novice to Linux, I think they did a great job on the DEs, and specially with the Light version, it's very very slim on idle, I'm looking forward to the day I have to reinstall my main system to make a proper dual boot between Arch and Zorin.

looks like with what you can get free, it would be worth about 15$... did they bump up the price to look a bit more legit? i used Zorin 12 free and can say it is a great OS but i liked Mint a bit more. i would say Zorin were my training wheels and that the next step for me is to some time try a Manjaro install to see the Arch side and it's differences.

Zorin has a really polished version of xfce. I have nothing against paying for a distro since developers deserve to get paid and the open source business model is focused on selling tech support, not licenses. Imo it's only problematic to charge for Linux when it's deceptive: like when Linspire sold a yearly subscription to their synaptic front-end Click-N-Run.
