A valiant rendition using his limited pallet. Bravo! Your loose brush work and edges are wonderfully impressive. Zorn is not an easy copy. I enjoyed your impasto techniques as well. A pleasure to watch.

Anders Zorn sadly is not well known to the general American audience. He was brilliant and his use of a limited pallets exemplifies the simplicity and complexity of his work. A true lesson on “ less is more.” As an artist I used his pallet for a year and learned so much. He is an unquestionable master.

I like how you didn’t “draw” in the form first with thinned paint like most other artists seem to do when copying. You just went into it with painting. That takes guts.

Very inspiring! I want to see you stick exclusively to the lead-red-yellow-black in the full size version tho 😜 I was bummed you didn't here, but I forgive you because it was a study.

Why not using Zorn palette,

I love to watch your videos. They make it look so simple to paint, even though I know it's very hard to replicate it. Sometimes you start with a drawing, sometimes don't. Which approach do you prefer?
@olddirtymasters3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ricardo. Painting without drawing is challenging but I hope it will make me a better painter over time. Drawing first sometimes takes some of the fun out of it especially a tracing. I guess it also depends on what effect you’re going for in the finished work.

@@olddirtymasters thanks for answering, ODM! 🙂 How long do you take to complete a portrait like this?
@olddirtymasters3 жыл бұрын
A painting like this usually takes around three hours.

That was a joy to watch. Do you think Zorn approached painting the same way?
@olddirtymasters2 жыл бұрын
Thanks TJ S! I don’t know how he worked unfortunately:) Maybe there is a contemporary account written somewhere or an unfinished canvas that would provide more insight.

@@olddirtymasters I've looked into it but haven't found anything conclusive. I think though your way of spotting colors around is probably the way he worked.

Hi, I think this one gets that plastic modeling that I am searching for, excellent job, it is so useful, I have a question, when i always try to made some of this, with more impasto I have a trouble with the oil, cause it's now dry and I feel like it's not good, I don't know how to do impastos like these, cause it has that feeling of movement of something quick, But when I use a medium or oil to make it a little bit more fluid it make more and more difficult to do impastos, how can I get impastos without feel it dry and feel no necessity of mediums?, or maybe the medium is used but I use it bad, please, It'll be very helpful, thanks, and I love your videos, new subscriber
@olddirtymasters3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeff, I used linseed oil for my medium here. Not sure if I exactly understand the question. I find that it takes a lot of trial and error to get the right amount of oil so the impasto flows but stands up nicely. How the brush is loaded matters too. A heavily loaded bristle brush can be dragged slowly or quickly and will let go of its paint if the wet paint it’s applied to is stiffer or the same as what’s on the brush. If the surface is too oily the impasto won’t want to stick to the canvas.
@jeffyaltavasquez62783 жыл бұрын
@@olddirtymasters, okay, thank you so much, knowing that if you put an impasto over a fresh layer that has medium it'll not work very good, ypu recomend me to start without medium?, I always work with medium at the beginning and I progressively use less medium while I continue, can it be the mistake?, cause I think that sometimes the color that I try to put over other just mixes and generates a new color, and I sometimes think that I'm using my canvas as a palette, seriously, thank you so much for being this helpful for beginners like me and others.
@olddirtymasters3 жыл бұрын
It’s usually helpful to thin tube colors with medium or solvent to increase their flow right from the start. Some beginners don’t put out enough paint on their palette because supplies are so expensive which can cause difficulties in carrying the work through and having enough paint to make corrections after scraping out problem areas that need to start over.

How many brushes are you using for something like this
