One of the things I love about these kinds of videos about creating something is the moment when the thing that is being made looks really wrong and maybe failed, but then it turns out that it was actually all going according to plan and the finished result is perfect

As someone that doesn't have a hot wire cutter I now feel I can make this. My only suggestion would be right at the base have the bottom half inch or so stained a little more than everywhere else to simulate the ground being wetter and rain and water collecting at the bottomed of the wall. Immense piece of terrain through, really awesome!!

Hi, i started a very similar project 2 years ago. I built the complete gatehouse (14 cm wide gate) with the four towers (48cm high) and the two walls protecting the area in front off the entrance. For the crenalation i used two laser-cutted mdf stencil with the Proxon hotwire table (which i used for the whole project). I’ve texturized the walls with your same metod. Now i need to build the rest of the modular walls and towers for a total of 2 meters long. I also have ti paint them ofc. Keep up the good work and regards from Italy

A way tp save time during the battlements section is to use the template against the foam and use a polystyrene cutter. Its a heated wire that cuts through the foam. The template held in place will keep you from cutting to far and it saves an ass load of time and blades. The thicker the foam, the slower you will go but it is still way quicker than cutting. I actually prefer the polystyrene cutter because if done right the cuts will be close to perfect. They range in price and some expensive ones are pretty cool, but the cheap ones can be bought at a hobby shop like Micheal's.

And there it is! Just like you promised on Facebook! Love it mate. Especially how you give that extra bit of depth. Two questions: Have you considered buying a Proxxon hot wire cutter? It really speeds up your process and gives beautiful cuts. You could cut 5 crenellations sections from 1 5cm block of foam and slice it down. Other question: does your foam also have that smooth silky layer/finish on the outer sides of the board? Gerard Boom from Shiftinglands advices to thinly slice that off because it doesn’t take glue and textures well. Thanks a lot mate!
@Zorpazorp4 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude!! I deliberately didn't use a proxxon in this video as I wanted to teach everyone who didn't have one it is possible to do it with a blade :) I find the silky finish is totally fine for texturing you just haver toi push a little harder, but sometimes it is better to sand it back if it's being stubborn :)

Watching you cut this out by hand got me thinking that one could save a lot of time on the battlements using something like a Silhouette or Circut to cut the foam - this might require multiple sheets of styrene glued together after cutting, but it has the advantage of being a largely hands off/can run in parallel while you are prepping and finishing other walls. Anyway looking forward to the templates, will try them on a Glowforge after some modification with MDF.
@Zorpazorp4 жыл бұрын
That sounds really cool dude I'm not familiar with those tools!
@charlesfe4 жыл бұрын
It's from the scrapbooking world, I've used them to cut stencils to put numbers on terrain and vehicles (with a bit of airbrushing). :) Can literally take your templates and send them to the machine to precision cut - it's hands off once the cutting begins. They are moderately priced - in the USD$200-400 range. Not really certain about the thickness of foam that could be cut, but might be worth some research.

In another video, as I recall, you indicated that someone 3d printed the battlements for you. Who printed those battlements for you, and are they available for sale? Also making the walls themselves might be something that Knights of Dice could make out of MDF. After the walls are basically a box of 280mm (11 inches) x 300mm (12 inches) x 100mm (4 inches). I don't know how well the laser milling could make the stone blocks and texturing) The laser milling could make battlements much easier to make Similar kits could be made for towers, landings, wedges and related structures. This could then become a project for one modeler and would be profitable for you and some of your friends. A customer could buy multiple kits. But for those wanting to make projects similar to your Minas Tirith wall, this would make the project much easier.

Great work as always, Lachlan - and such an easy way to build this stunning city of Middle Earth. Congrats! I would like to make a suggestion, because I used similar techniques when I did build my Gondor walls (inspired by your work as your surely remember): If you own a Proxxon Thermocut or similar cutter just pin the template onto the foam board and then use the Thermocut to cut the components out (low heat recommened). If you use a thicker piece of foam board you can cut slices / sheets instead of cutting seperate wall pieces - see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWfPqniBnJmel7s This safes a lot of time and it's easy to do.

Thanks dude glad you liked it! I'll absolutely making my own set with a hot wire cutter bro, this tutorial is just aimed at all the less experienced hobbyists at home who don't have access to one during isolation :)

@@Zorpazorp Yes, to keep basic techniques in mind is always a great help for beginners. I think I'm maybe a bit to addicted to the hot wire cutter because of the book ;-) :D
