Nice video, thank you for sharing. You can apply a herbicide on it after you plant it. Plugs should be mature and can accept any herbicide labeled for zoysia. One of the issues you had was that you didn’t mow it and it allowed the weeds to grow taller than the plugs. There is a growth hormone stored in the tips of the grass leaf blades and it needs to be mown off at regular intervals. The more you mow, the more you are encouraging lateral growth. The other thing that I noticed is they sent you square plugs…. I prefer round plugs to go into round holes.

@@NCGrassPlugs great feedback, thanks! I assumed the weeds were mostly due to the lack of prepping the area before planting. I have been mowing it regularly since the video and will apply a herbicide soon. Do you sell Zoysia plugs? If so, what kind?

Zoysia grows s-l-o-w-l-y especially in shade. It will fill in eventually and once it does, the weeds will fade into a memory. I have Zeon and Zorro zoysia cultivars and am amazed how they still spread in shady conditions. I cut them pretty high to give them more leaf blade area to help in the shade. After two years, they have covered a bald spot in the trees that St. Augustine couldn't tolerate.

Thanks for the reply @geomark8851. I do have a lot of shade in my yard. If you check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJPXood4mad2e6csi=cC3Jl7ysBIwFHmQN you can really see how much shade I have from the Live Oak Trees. I have heard Zoysia is great at choking out weeds, so hopefully that happens and I will probably use some Celsius to help the process. Great video...I live in San Antonio where days are getting very hot currently in August. Every day is in the mid 90s probably until mid to late October. Is it too late to plant plugs? Is it ok to plant them later in the fall? Thanks.

Hey, I appreciate it. This was my first time planting plugs so I don’t want to pass bad info. I’ll defer to @NCGrassPlugs for his thoughts. He commented below if you need to reach him. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and check out my other videos. I’m adding a new pre-germinating seeds in the next few days.

I don’t imagine it is too late though. I just laid some seed in my yard and we’re averaging high 80s/low 90s. That will take longer to sprout than plugs. The plugs already have established roots. I think you’d be fine to do it.

Why didn’t you put down a preemergent with the plugs? It wouldn’t affect the plugs and would have prevented your weed issues?
@LowcountryLawn3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment @jonesey1981. The main reason is that this was my first time putting down grass plugs and have limited experience with pre-emergent. I will do pre-emergent next time I install plugs for sure. Probably will use Milorganite as well. Even though the plugs have mature roots, I didn’t want to press my luck. This is a good lesson learned for anybody watching. Hope you still enjoyed the video and liked and subscribed if you did.

preemergent will make it difficult for the stolons to tack down, they will run but need to root
