I remember before I first drove on the beach at the OBX....I watched about a catrillion videos on how to do it. From Australia, to West Coast, to here....did he not do this? To have a rig like that...built up, the trailer...and to literally go head first into the ocean...Good Gawd. I know we're all beating a dead horse here but wow. He's very luck he didn't lose his truck.

What PSI are you running on those 40's. At 15PSI he would have driven right out of those holes. Once you start sinking stop spinning the tires.

Well all I can say is not a smart idea, but glad it all came out ok. We all know the ZR2 is an awesome truck, I got one, love it… but when it comes to situations like this, even the best truck is only good as the driver. Looks like an awesome adventure regardless.

OMG almost ripped the guy‘s hand and arm off when he yanked on the tow strap. This is what you do not do with your vehicle or with human life when it comes to recovery people actually die in situations like this. Safety first!

Being lifted and on 40's that was the only chance to ever test out his snorkel and he blew it by getting out. LOL! :-) Must also agree with the other salt water comments living near Galveston all my life. It will destroy your truck. Learned that lesson on my lifted S10 Z during hurricane IKE. Luckily Harvey was fresh water and I had it way over my 33's above my rockers trying to rescue people. Won't be taking my new Z anywhere near the salt water to play.

Yall pulled up to the waves like you have no idea how corrosive salt water is, first time at the beach? Snatch strap would have pulled them out with either of those vehicles on the first try. That future rust is going to teach y'all some hard lessons.
@TNTOverlander
@TNTOverlander 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, that is why I made sure not to get in the water personally. I did get close at the beginning but the water did not touch the tires (wet sand, yes that did but we were informed to drive on the wet sand) until on a "puddle" near the town on cape lookout.

😐 Keep a kinetic rope as part of your recovery gear. The Jeep could of done it by itself in one pull. Learn by your mistakes. Inform yourself a bit more on driving on the beach and recovery techniques.

I saw the hammering you took on the facebook overlanders group for this... truth be told... most of the comments where right... much stupidity involved... but at the same time... they overlooked the point... you guys acknowledged that mistakes where made... it was an opportunity not to give you guys shit for being idiots, but rather to discuss what happened, how to avoid it in the first place, how to do the recovery safely and efficiently if things do go wrong. From the video it looked like you guys had not aired down... That was the first mistake (I will disregard the tread lightly and beach closing comments from facebook as it appears from the video that you where on one of the beaches that does permit wheeling.) You guys should of aired those tires down as low as you could go. The more contact patch you have the better it does not guarantee you won't get stuck, but it does greatly lower your chances for it. The same is true for most off roading, but especially so on sand. Much of the modern American idea of overlanding (down to equipment choices) is taken from the Australians. Our Aussie brethren have published countless videos about the value of airing down when on sand. The Jeep may have won the day, but they SHOULD of used a deadman anchor. This is an anchor of some form (often a spare tire) buried in the sand to give a secure anchor point. this would of stopped (or at least limited) how much the jeep was able to slide and dig in. it looked from the marks in the sand that the jeep nearly got itself stuck, and if not, it easily could of done so. I am going to go out on a limb here and guess the truck did not have front and rear lockers. I understand getting lockers can be an expensive proposition, but they are made for terrain like this. I heard you guys talking back and forth on the radio, and it sounded like you where talking to the blue truck. If not SOMEONE should of given the blue truck a loaner radio for the trip... ALWAYS make sure everyone is on comms. Even if that means loaning an HT to a driver who lacks comms... These days ham radio is growing in popularity with the off road community, but not every one is licensed... You should always have some extra radio gear that can be used by unlicensed individuals (such as FRS or CB). The blue truck should of got on the radio the moment they realized they where getting stuck instead of trying to power out. You guys absolutely did the right thing going for the traction boards and recovery straps as soon as you realized the truck was stuck, though it looked from the video like you did not dig adequate ramps out of the holes the tires had dug. I am not sure how many you guys had as a group, but it looked like the answer was "not enough". I hope you guys refilled those holes... they are an invitation for erosion. Lessons I hope your friend in the blue truck learned: 1: Always air down 2: The water line is dangerous, even if the videos from the manufactures and Hollywood make it look cool with the vehicles driving down at the waters edge spraying water everywhere. the action of the waves actually can turn that same sand into quicksand through a mix of liquification and rapid erosion. 3: That trailer can add a lot more drag than it feels like 4: Salt water will get into places under the truck you did not know it could reach and if you do not carefully wash inch of the undercarriage after playing in the salt water, your truck WILL RUST no matter how new it is. As for those idiots on facebook giving you shit over this... Mistakes where made... hopefully lessons where learned. I would bet most of them have done something stupid, or over estimated their vehicles capability at some point. I see enough 4x4s with body damage here in east Tennessee to know it happens even without trying to tackle Wind Rock :)

The ZR2 has front and rear lockers but I don't think he was engaged when he got stuck and only used them after he dug in deep. Outside of that you are pretty dead on.
