Works nicely with Salt and heat gun if you need to bend a section of pipe after assembly. (for water systems... it dissolves when line filled with water)

I'm an architect so when we built our house we did radiant heat concrete floors that were stained and polished. It's an acetone based dye that goes down in layers and has an acrylic sealer on top.

When I was in the electrical construction the way we did it was in heated antifreeze and placed it in a form to keep the bends uniform.

Thanks! It worked great!!! I tried a heat gun and internal spring-kinked up, couldn't get that uniform heat like the sand supplies-thanks again for this post.

Nice with the radiant heat. When my house was being built I went in before they put in hardwoods and thought about just staining the concrete and going with that. Nice work. And thanks for doing this video. I am doing a project for my daughter for school and bending was the issue.

Hit the outside with a blow dryer once you put the sand in so that it's heating from both inside and out. It should go a lot quicker.

You could also filled it up with normal (cold) temperature sand and heat the pipe up with small fire of a torch from outside, slowly not to burn the pipe. Pretty cool project thought that you've done.
@technicolorchristmas
@technicolorchristmas 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, that will work, however the pipe often "kinks". The sand supplies the same heat as steam or a heat gun, while maintaining the round shape of the pipe. If you want to prevent the distortion or flattening of the pipe, you have to have some medium on the inside to maintain it.

After various experiments I found out that bending pvc pipes with hot water was the best way !! This way , with sand , seems very good , but triky to use if trying to bend a 6 meters (19.6 feet)pipe !! With hot water applied from outside untill softening and then bending around a pre cut wooden form the work is made much easier !! But if you use flame it become brittle , and near useless since you cannot trust it anymore !! Now heat gun applied too hot or too long has the same effect that flame !!

Leave sand in pipe from one end to the other and tape both ends in place. then use a hot hair dryer and heat around the pipe where you want to bend it and the packed in sand will hold its form inside the pipe and you wont risk getting burned by this technique. Then un tape and dump out cold sand.

When my pool was built, I was astonished to see the Mexicans using a propane torch, sweeping it carefully back and forth along the PVC for a minute or so, then just grabbing one end of the pipe and jumping down into the pool pit and dragging the PVC behind them like a rubber hose! I couldn't believe how flexible it became. It was very fast and easy -- they do it all day long, so it has to be easy, fast, and effective. I've never tried it, but it sure looked easy.

Great job. I have been seeing people heat the pvc from the outside. When the video began, I thought you were going to cook the sand in the aluminum pan using the burners. I guess its more important to use the oven to get the perfect temperature.

Just a thought, have you tried submerging the pipe ( where you want the bend) in boiling water, it has worked for me, or you could use a hot gun on the area that you want to bend, when it starts to go a bit floppy bend it to where you want it to be, then leave to cool down.

I haven't tried it to test my theory, but I wonder if you could just buy a flexible type metal tubing for sinks inside with heat gun on outside to keep the shape? if someone tries let me know.

+Chris Sproles There is a commercially available product that uses a spring on the inside to keep the shape, but it can still burn the outside of the pipe and it's expensive to purchase the tool.

Why use the oven when you have the cook top. It is a lot less time consuming and so much quicker. Set up two batches of sand so you do not have to wait for the second heat up.

a quick and dirty method for short sections is to microwave it with a glass of water. do not microwave if it has glue or any other impurities on it. Only works for small radius bends. dip in cold water to set.

I've never tried it but I don't think it will work. You really need something that will "hold" the heat and the granular make up of the sand does that. It also helps get it out after you're finished bending and the pipe has cooled. I'd stick with sand, a small bag is very inexpensive at most big box stores.

Glycol hot benders were great, but the EPA frowned on glycol spills. We use the Greenlee "hotbox" 1/2-4" or "hot blanket" 1/2-2". Heat guns will do up to about 1 1/4". Propane torch 1 1/2", & weed burners will do 2" with patience and much care. Scorching the pipe ruins it. Hot sand is a great way to get even heating. Wear gloves, & don't kink the pipe. Use wet rags to cool pipe when it is shaped nicely. No ovens on a job site. Heat pipe evenly slowly carefully, & bend. Too hot = too soft.

This can be done by channeling steam from a kettle through the pipe until the pipe shows signs of sagging and then bend to shape.
@alfredomarquez9777

Yes. But with steam it is easy to get burned, as it is hard to see! Hot sand seems safer and more practical.

This method will work, however, you need a large pot and a lot of water to do a larger section of pipe. Heating the sand allows you to bend the whole pipe at once and there's really no limit to the length.

If you don't have one you just have to buy one! With all the plastic goodies today a little heat is almost necessary for removal and reassembly . No need for fancy dial temp models, simply adjust using distance from the heated object. They save bundles of cash on broken items, especially if they are old or sun hardened. I use mine at least weekly for something

You have to use sand. Dirt won't work because it won't hold the heat. Pretty much any sand would work. You can get it at a pond, beach, or even a store like Toys R Us that sells sand for sand boxes. You can also get sand at landscaping companies or nurseries.
