I am new to freehand sharpening. I recently bought a soft Arkansas from Dan's Whetstone and I wanted to know if I am doing this right. Every time I pass the blade I can feel the friction and it feels like I am scratching or shaving the surface of the stone and when I wipe the blade it leaves a black mark an my cloth. Thanks

What sharpening stuff did you use for this knife cause I got the same one and I use watering stones and I feel I didn’t get the best edge on my blade I used 600-1000-6000-12000 stones and a strop but didn’t get the best edge

Great video, great edge. That Ken Schwartz stuff took that edge to extra quiet sharpness. I just ordered me some of that pasta goi compound though, really looking forward to it.

Me just getting into sharpening I have yet to run into the s35vn steel but I've been eyeballing a lt wright Jx2 with cpm 3v steel, whats your take on it as opposed to sharpening? Besides their knives coming to you dull that is.. lol
@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531
@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 4 жыл бұрын
Well first off lt wright and battle horse knives are the same thing. And I had the model you are talking about, was highly dissatisfied. Chris Tanner designed that thing. But lt and battle horse has the best heat treat in the business. Peters heat treat. And if you are new to Sharpening you are gonna hate 3v it is not beginner friendly. I'd hang around the 01 tool steel dept of I were you.

Ahh okay well I will keep that in mind lol. I have an esee 4hm and izula, I really like the 1095 hc atleast what I've received from esee. Maybe I'll stick with the 1095 until I refine my technique for awhile then try and venture out to tougher stuff.

@@SgtBaconFace esee is my other favorite heat treat. Rowen's 1095 is bad ass. Damn near bullet proof. 3v will take quite a bit of time to master.

I only had to warranty something once with DMT around a year ago and it was great overall. I had a 8" fine/extra fine and on the extra fine side some of the holes that should be recessed for swarf stuck up above the plate the tiniest little bit and you would feel the edge clip them. They just sent me a brand new one and I got to keep the old one. It did take maybe 3 weeks for me to get it eventually but the woman also sent me a fine credit card plate for your wallet and a fine diafold.

@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 It wasn't a "old" plate it was brand new actually. That being said I have only ever had to warranty a new item not a used one. I was super happy I didn't have to send the defective one back. It was only the extra fine side that had a issue and you could still use it if you wanted to. It was a extra bonus opening it up and have a couple extra pocket stones as well. Also I gave the original plate to a guy at work for his woodworking stuff. It's kind of funny he never used diamond plates before but only a daily basis he uses diamond and cbn pastes to polish the parts we make in the tool room for the machines on the floor.

As I said I'm many previous videos as well as this one, Dmts quality control anymore is garbage. They don't last like they used to. The bonding process they use is horrible. I've even seen some out of flat.

Ever try sitting on a higher chair or stool when sharpening? It's easier for me if I'm more above the stone. I can work longer before it starts to hurt.

I can't remember the company but on a Michael Christie video he used diamond wet stones that I'd like to try low grits on. Would have to flatten every once n a while but they look like they'd last for quite a while. They might suck too but i can't find any other videos about them. Love the videos dude!

@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 they have multiple sizes the biggest being 8x3. They are all double sided Stones with choices of how much diamond concentration is in the stone. Most expensive 8x3s have 2mm thick of resin bonded diamond so if the diamonds get pulled out for any reason the 2mm takes a long time to get thru. They don't cut as deep as DMT Stones so picture more of the fjnish u get from Arkansas Stones vs the toothy DMT edges. As for wearing out quickly I have yet to see it first-hand unless they are soaking the Stones instead of splash and go. Vitrified bond needs to soak not resin bonded Stones.
