ZT 0470 Unboxing -- Sinkevich Super Atmos!

My initial thoughts on the ZT 0470. Probably the best overall ZT release of 2018, the 0470 has been highly anticipated. It is essentially a grown up version of the Kershow Atmos. It maintains all the functionality of the little brother with a bit of special flare, like 20CV steel and marbloed CF inlay.

I have just go my 0470 and am entirely happy with it. What amazes me is the diminutive flipper tab, and despite its small size the knife stills fires reliably. This is probably my favorite ZT of the 5 models I own. I am glad ZT is venturing down this road, to a smaller EDC friendly packaged general purpose folder rather than only seeming to concentrating on large over built tanks.

TBH, This is why i actually love the look of the Sinkevich Spyderco Drunken. CF and Titanium with amazing looks on both sides. Yes its expensive compared to this, but i think it worth it and maybe even a better knife. I love the simplicity of the clean titanium with the cf on one side, but if they texturised the titanium "non show side" (I'm a lefty), it would nearly be a 10/10. CF x 2 would be overkill IMO.

I actually don't mind that it only has CF on the presentation side, and if you look at the knife there is little room for it anyway on the lock side. I have just bought a 0470 and can now see first hand how little room is left for a insert on the lock side.

Looks worlds better than the 0609. The 0609 felt slippery in my hand, everything so rounded and smooth, it always felt like it was going to fly out of my hand when opening or closing. Also no STP to contend with and some marbled CF. Can't wait to pick one of these up!

Mine has a stronger detent, always fires out, but the edge grind is horrendous. Looks like someone was drunk when they sharpened it, super wavy, the tip is at a different angle depending on the side, I've heard a lot of people having one issue or another with these 0470's. Seems like they rushed out the first batch,

Not big on flippers or ballbearings, but this one has caught my eye. This knife and the 640 are the first ZT's to catch my eye. since the first Hinderer and Emerson collaborations.

Hmmmmm..... When I edc’d a ZT, it was the 0770CF. It’s a great knife, but the Speed Safe was a bit annoying. I own many ZT knives, and this one looks like a winner in terms of practical EDC.

I really like the blade design on this one, but am a bit more ambivalent as to how the rest of it is handled. I wish they had done something a bit different from the Atmos inlay. That said, some of the anodized versions of this look less like a Kershaw and more like a proper ZT. Look forward to your final diagnosis!

I got a reply email from ZT on 10/4/2018 after requesting a deep carry clip for this knife. This is what they said. " Unfortunately we have not tested any deep carry clips on 0470 knives, since it is a brand new model. We can send you a 0560 pocket clip, which may fit it and work as a deep carry " . I have a deep carry clip from mxg for my 0450 and it fits the 0470 as well .

The inlay on mine was botched. Made the pivot free spinning. Once I got it apart and oiled I'm happy with it.

Ryan T. How did you end up taking it apart? Mine has a free spinning pivot and I have no idea how to unscrew it

@@skitt52 I ended up having to super glue the pivot after trying rubber backing, end of a desk and everything else under the sun. Super glue worked, just have acetone on hand to remove the glue. Keep the glue/acetone off the CF as acetone will eat the epoxy in the CF. It was a major PITA but it worked.

Hah, it's like you read my mind... I was just watching videos on this knife a few days ago. One of my biggest complaints about Zero Tolerance has always been the the use of fairly thick blade steel and I'm absolutely thrilled to see a thinner blade on this knife, especially since they seem to be allergic to FFG. I would love to see a .100" blade with a high flat grind or a full flat grind on some new EDC knives soon; despite the fact that the ontario rat has a sort of boring action I attribute the blade thickness and grind to the success of that knife. I've never really understood the obsession behind 0.150" knife blades which seem to be on everything, especially when considering how common ball bearings are becoming. No one is going to be prying or batoning a $250 gentlemen carry/edc knife, give us something that slices well already!

As an owner of both the 0609 & 0470 I'm torn on which one is better. One thing is for sure they are both great knive that carry well and are an ideal size for my hand ntm edc.

I love the lines of Shirogorov knives but not the price, so I picked this up anodized blue from @usamadeblade because it seems very similar in shape to me. I haven’t had anything else in my pocket since. I was a bit worried that the sharp angles might be uncomfortable but I don’t even notice them in my hand.

Hey man, pretty sure that Rockstead is its own company and not under the KAI umbrella. Aside from Kershaw and ZT, all the other KAI brands are kitchen or household utility blades (scissors, cardboard cutters, nail clippers, etc.)

Good looking knife.. I think ZT was making detents too strong and now went the other way.. My 0393 can fail when flipping.. It's not horrible but a push button works a little better..I think my older 0562 would be impossible to fail...

I have adjusted the tension on lockbar with good results on several knives.Biggest problem with that on this knife is the free spinning pivot.Poor design imho.Just ordered one and hope tension is ok.Go easy on pressure if you adjust the locker tension.

ZT could have put a short screw in clip hole.Empty holes along with overdone logos on blades turn me off.

I don't know which first ZT to try. 562 CF, 0470, or 0640.??? 562 seems bulky, and I don't like the blade height.

I love the knife , but hate the clip , it looks like it rides really high . I wish companies would give 2 clips, 1 being a deep carry , because now I have to spend another $25 - $35 on a deep clip. Cold Steel has been giving out 2 clips for years, l know ones a left carry , but it could easily be a deep carry clip , if they made the clip to fit both sides, something to think about ZT...

my only gripe is that it's not over 3.5" - with these knives getting so slim, they don't fill the hand as well as i'd like. otherwise it's such a simple design but completely over engineered, really beautiful. the slim blade is a great slicer.

I’ve been searching and searching for an answer. My pivot free spins but you says it’s slotted. Before I get into returning this thing are you 100% sure the pivot is keyed?

imgur.com/a/d71WZeD Here is a photo of the disassembled pivot. It is in fact keyed so that the pivot face is stabilized against the CF inlay. There are 2 areas of "flat" that serve as the stabilizers. I bet, if you unscrew your pivot and press down on the presentation side of the pivot, it will find this keyhole and drop in, allowing you to unscrew the pivot.

Doctor Frunkey Well. You showed me what I was afraid of. Im 99.9% sure the carbon fiber hole is rounded out. I never got the pivot to start unscrewing. It’s tight with no blade play and swings free. I can pinch both sides of the pivot and spin it. Thanks for your picture and help. Looks like she’ll be going back. Not being able to disassemble and maintain a bearing style pivot is not going to work for me.

i got some good advice from people who bought this on bladeforums. its a stunning looker, but not a complete package as a user is concerned. not terrible but not great either. had they used some milling on that cf to give some grip, that would have been nicer. you aint gonna be stabbing much with this light use knife either because of that. in anycase, i may try for a raffle or two for this one but else im going to pass unless i find a deal unable to pass up. for a show/art knife it is stunning.

I might almost recommend getting the Kershaw and then throwing it away and buying a new one when you feel like it haha. Save $200.
